I think this is what a lot of Ullrich fans, the German media, and Godefroot have never figured out. He may still be the second best GT rider in the World, but he is not the rider he was in 1997 and never will be. For example, his ITT up the Alpe this year was about a minute slower that he climbed it in 1997 (yes it was a regular stage that year, but he did most of the serious climb solo somewhere between Pantani & Virenque).

He is just built too big and maturing from 23 to 30 has made him a less advantageous size and shape for cycling, even with his body fat down to a few per cent.
