Subject: Embarassed Cycling Fan Here

In the wake of Landis' victory, I had been gushing to anyone halfway interested about how awesome his achievement is and how great his victory is for American cycling.

Already, 2 of my friends have called me up regarding the positive doping test, probably afraid I would be devastated etc by the probable fall of my hero. Of course, I never ruled out the possibility that Landis was doping and I felt that Lemond's reaction was dumb at best. Nevertheless, right now I feel embarrassed to be enthusiastic about this sport. Whatever the outcome of this scandal, I think it is increasingly unlikely that outsiders will believe in this sport in the future. For this we can only blame the culture of professional cycling, the selfishness of the sponsers, and the naivete of cycling fans.

If I had any power within cycling, this is what I would say.... Dopers, either fess up now or get the hell out of the sport. The fact that "everybody does it" may have some relevance but it isn't an excuse for the sort of boldfaced mendacity that makes us ashamed to love cycling.

It's time for extraordinary measures--a new ethical oath/code and a cleansing of dirty DSes. Riis and co. need to be the first ones to go IMHO. Doping of this sort is simply not possible without the tacit support of team managers.
