Federer's success is SO much more than just developing mental confidence. He simply has fantastic skills and literally blows opponents off the court with that forehand. He blanked Hewitt 6-0 in two of the three sets of the US Open finals, so there isn't any question of endurance either.

Also, it takes the men longer to really develop on the tennis circuit than the women. When was the last time you saw a 14-year old boy with braces even entered into a Grand Slam tournament, much less advancing into later rounds?

I don't see anything suspicious about Federer's rise to the top of his sport.
