But I thought that everybody slowed down significantly for about half the stage just after Zabriskie got away, when Valverde crashed. So, was Zabriskie that "strong", or just lucky because of circumstances beyond his control?

Note that I am not suggesting that Zabriskie or USPS "cheated" or anything. David rode hard all the way and deserved his win, circumstances be damned.
