Jane, I can think of several reasons to dislike Hamilton. He's gotten bad advice from folks around him. Riis was right on in handling Tyler, but since he's gone to Phonak, he's acting like a star without the results to back it up. He comes across lately as whining and begruding.

That interview after the Olympic RR was a real putdown of Bettini. Tyler said he wished the RR race was harder so it was more selective--what a cut to the winners. If it was so easy, why didn't he win? Then dedicating his Olympic TT win to his dog was too sappy (and I love dogs). He seems to be playing too much for sympathy lately--an attention freak almost.

Just that display as he retired from the Tour did it for me. Going the wrong way in a race (when was that ever okay) and giving the royal wave to all the team cars--really. Then taking off his jersey for the camera to display his wounds. How many articles has he published now showing his back? "Me thinks he doth protest too much." He said himself he could finish the Tour but he couldn't win it so what was the point of continuing. Duh! It's a race. You ride for your teammates if you can't make up the time you've lost. Or win a stage. I think he was embarrassed that after all the hype he wasn't going to win afterall. Not very "tough" or "sportsmanlike" either. Riis would have kept him in the race like he did Bobby Julich (with a broken wrist no less). Tyler may be "good people," but he has gone over the top with the wounded hero bit at this point.

Hey, I decided Euskaltel wouldn't let Mayo retire that day on Plateau de Beille because Tyler and Phonak had all the media scheduled already. Retiring shouldn't be a production--you get in the car as quickly as you can and nurse your wounds in dignified silence. Come on!

Just putting into words what I've been disappointed about. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I stand by it. I think Tyler has suffered lately from all the folks around him telling him how great he is. I think he needs to catch himself on--and soon before he destroys all the good will he's amassed over the years.
