Lee J. Cobb was, IMO, very much of a "Ben Cartwright" figure in the early years of The Virginian, when he played the role of Judge Garth.

His relationship with Virginian was similiar to that of an oldest son (Adam). Garth fulfilled the role of the "reasonable man" in much the way that Ben Cartwright did.

The Judge Garth years were the best years of The Virginian series, IMO.

Rick, I think that when Claude was on Lobo, he'd send out an autographed picture to his fans WITH a letter on "Sheriff" stationery. I see them for sale on e-bay now and then,..

...of I bought one a few years ago and it was only a couple of bucks, the letter that is without the photo of maybe going for about twenty bucks is my guess now for the signed photos at premium prices.

P.S. "What in Sam Hill" are you doing to us!? Of to think of how Morgan Woodward as Hoss would have confronted another whistling killer other that Claude Akins, of sorry I meant Simon Oakland I think as I get them mixed up. (;-) O.K. Here's the scenario: Simon Oakland is whistling down that alley and Morgan Woodward as Hoss flies in from his kite off the cliff like that giant owl that escaped from Michael Renee's "The Keeper" episode on "Lost in Space" last Saturday night on METV. http://mjbivouac.deviantart.com/art/Michael-Rennie-as-The-Keeper-113837567 Of as the fly-in to pick him up and deposit him over at Lee Martin's gold diggings as with only Adam as his "helper" he needs another digger, and now we cut to the commercial of selling a segment of The Dean Martin Show with some of his Gold Diggers! (;-) "Dean Martin and Dean's Girls" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwXNaC2m5ZI&feature=related of 1:49 minute with 32,766 visits. - - - - - The above with Morgan Woodward as that crazed star ship captain in that old episode of STAR TREK of course in the back of my mind as I did write this. Just so you know that I have not "flipped out" or that somebody put me into such a torture chamber and did "Turn up the Juice" of the electricity that is, of like in a Tesla Coil experiment gone haywire!

....one time I was talking with friends about why there had never been a good movie about Babe Ruth. One of the reasons is that hte lead part has never been well cast. So we got to discussing who we would cast as the Babe.

The best one was the fella who played him in "Pride of the Yankees", (1941). Babe Ruth. The 1948 film "The Babe Ruth Story" is an awful film and William Bendix, short, stumpy and potato-faced was a terrible choise to play him. Ramon Bieri made a pretty good Ruth in "Eleanor and Lou, a Love Story", a TV movie from the 70's. John Goodman was the size of two babe Ruths in "The Babe" from 1992. Stephen Lang played Ruth using a plastic face, (because he looked nothing like him) in a TV movie around the same time. Joe Don Baker played a Ruthian character called "The Whammer" in "The Natural" (1984)

In 1948 I would have cast Jackie Gleason, another extrovert with a prodigious talent and lifestyle along with great showmanship. If you look at clips from "The Life of Reilly", (1949) you can see that he was relatively svelte at that time.

The best time to make a movie about Ruth might have been after Roger Maris broke his home run record in 1961. My #1 choise at that time would have been Claude Akins, who ahd that moon face and outgoing personality but could hlso show internal pain and anger, which is also part of Ruth's story. he also had a broad-shouldered, athletic build. My back up choise would have been Simon Oakland, a little more pudgy and not quite as happy looking but also similar looking to the Babe.

These days? I have no idea who I'd cast. But there's someone out there....

John Goodman was great in "The Artist" that I just saw the other day at the local movie theatre. Especially with that expression of after the tap dancing with sound I think it was. (;-)

I haven't seen him in that "The Flintstones" movie, but from what I see of parts it looks disgusting. Just like that attempt at to imitate The "Addams Family" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" - - of Jed Clampett/ Buddy Ebsen's drinking cup from the show scooped up by the props people back then and bought up by the new Southern Pawn Star man on last night's "The History Channel" (58 here in New Hampshire) who bought if for $xxx.xx and kept it 20 years listing it for sale at $700.00 but with a fan offering $500.00 and the owner's daughter said: sell it! give the regular a good deal, as done.
