I remember watching an Andy Griffith reunion ep a few years ago and one of the writers of the show had said they had seriously considered using Black,African-American actors and actresses in episodes, but they decided against it.

From his in-depth and interesting interview, all the writers and actors on the show were in early favor of it,but he said the network and the producers and writers finally felt too much pressure and understandable worries about lossing their tv show's popularity in those times so they decided against it!

It was truly amazing how Bonanza pulled this off and it didn't seem to affect their ratings or popularity to the vast majority of the tv viewing public.

...is the otherwise excellent episode "Look to the Stars", two years prior to "Enter Thomas Bowers", (it was shown 3/18/62 vs. 4/26/64), which showed a teacher who was prejudiced against kids who were "different". They exposed him by showing the chidlren whom he had expelled from class- a Jew, an Indian, a Mexican, a Chinese, etc. But here was no black child, even though the West was full of displaced African-Americans. it seems clear that in 1962, the network was unwilling to show a favorable or sympathetic presentation of blacks for fear of offending the southern white audience but by the time "Enter Thomas Bowers" was shown two years alter, after Martin Luther King's speech and George Wallace's stand at the schoolhouse door, they decided it was OK because there was such a reaction for King and against Wallace.
