I was determined not to like this episode, because I could tell early on that it had a thin plot and the nitroglycerine issue has been done to greater effect in many other films and television programs. But as I watched it, despite some of the more drawn-out scenes, I began to change my mind. I decided that this installment of 'Bonanza' made good use of Ben's backstory and it gave us a chance to review his own relationships with his three sons (including Adam) in comparison with the relationships that Ed Begley's character had with his own boys. Of course, we knew someone was going to get killed in an explosion; and predictably, the favorite son is the one that got blown to kingdom come. But again, there were some noteworthy moments here that shed more light on the Cartwrights. It's a Ben episode, with Hoss and Joe showing up 27 minutes into the action. And it benefits greatly from the extensive on-location shooting at handsome Lake Tahoe.
