I'm sure if he regretted leaving and wanted to come back, that would have happened, especially during the final season after Blocker's death. It would have made more sense to bring Adam back at the end instead of Candy, if that was something Pernell had been interested in doing. I looked at his screen credits on the IMDb, and he worked a lot about leaving 'Bonanza.' There are really no lulls or absences from the screen. Leaving the show did not hurt his career at all, if anything it opened up new avenues for him to play different types of character roles. I grew up watching him as 'Trapper John' and he was fabulous on that series. He really was able to defy typecasting.
