What is saddest ending? One of the most compelling examples in my opinion is "Old Friends".

Two of Ben's old friends show up after 27 years. Jess Waddell, Charlie Sheppard, and Ben once worked a claim together. Now Jess is a bounty hunter and the man he is
hunting is Charlie Sheppard.

A nice runner up in my opinion would be "The Stillness Within"

Joe is blinded in an accident and the doctor doesn't know if his condition will be permanent or temporary. Joe is filled with self pity, he feels useless and refuses to see
anyone outside of the family because he doesn't want their pity. In desperation Ben hires a teacher from the institute for the blind to come and help Joe When Miss Dobbs arrives to teach Joe, Ben is surprised to learn she is blind also . Miss Dobbs tells Ben it would be better not to tell Joe she is blind until after she has had a chance to work with him. Joe is furious when he meets Miss Dobbs because he believes his sight will return, so therefore he doesn't need to learn the things she wants to teach him. Eventually Joe and Miss Dobbs form a bond as she shows him that blind people can be useful. Miss Dobbs tells Ben it would be best for Joe to return with her to the institute, where he could feel useful being a teacher Ben is deeply saddened at the thought of loosing his youngest son but agrees because he knows it would be best for Joe. One Morning Joe wakes up and screams for Ben and Hoss to come to his room. When they enter he tells them he can see! All three men have tears in their eyes as they realize Little Joe will be all right.
Joe races to tell Miss Dobbs and only then does he discover she is blind.

What could have a sadder ending than Erin? Hoss finally met his soulmate and then she is gone. Tragic ending to the best love story in all of Bananza. If they had kept her there would have been no need for Jamie. What potential for some great stories. UGH !! adamseve

I agree! That was for sure one of my favorite. Very sad, I loved the Erin episode a lot! Forever comes to mind too. That was really sad. They said Michal Landon was really crying over Dan Blocker death, not his new wife. The episode itself was sad, the end of Forever was bizzare. Speaking of bizzare, the way Bonanza ended with "The Hunter" was bizzare to me. What a weird episode to use in just axeing it out of primetime. But it's sudden demise and last episode was bizzare.

I am notoriously bad for not remembering names of eps. But I THINK the name of one of the saddest endings of the eps I've seen is "Little Man Ten Feet Tall".

"Little Man, Ten Feet Tall" is a very good episode, Leah, or you might be thinking of "The Saga of Whizzer McGee".

"The Newcomers" is another one, although the ending is somewhat hopeful as well, as Hoss gets back to work.

Thank you, Tim. In the ep I'm thinking of, the short man Hoss befriended is killed, breaking Hoss's heart. And mine.Leah

Yes, that would be "The Saga of Whizzer McGee" from season four. I agree, it does have a very sad ending.

Good Candy episode:

The Stalker - 1969
After Candy shoots and kills armed robber James Campbell in self defense, he learns that he left behind his widow, Lisa, and young son ... and a farm to operate. A remorseful Candy decides to help the young woman out, not knowing that Lisa plans to hire a hit man to kill the Ponderosa's foreman in revenge. However, Lisa learns that Candy had all the qualities that her husband never had and changes her mind, but then they must work together to stop the hit man from completing his mission.

(Sad ending when Candy leaves).

How about "Feet of clay" (I believe that is the tittle).

When Hoss has to kill the little boy's father and the little boy is punching Hoss in the chest and screaming "I hate you, I hate you", while Hoss is crying.

That's probably the most compelling saddest episode period. However the actual ending offers hope, as the little boy takes Hoss's hand as they start walking down the road.

That was Feet of Clay. A very, very good episode that showcased what a really good actor Dan was.. The little boy was Alan Ladd's son David who grewup and married Cheryl Ladd. So I quess he did alright until they divorced. She replaced Farrah on Charlies Angel's, did alot of tv movies and of late was James Cann's wife on Vegas. And she still could pass for an Angel. adamseve

I agree. Feet of Clay was another very sad episode. Alan Ladd's son was excellent in that role. And the episode played to Hoss' strong point as a very kind and empathetic person.

What timing! Thanks R.L. See above for Ed in today's episode of Route 66.

That goes without saying.

But an underated one I've liked since I ferst saw it several years ago was "The Dream Riders" where Ben's friend dies and his balloon floats untethered to the sky with Ben saying "Goodbye".

It was Robert Altman's favorite of the several episodes he directed.

Yes, SWC, and that ep is also one of the funniest in other parts; where Hoss sends Joe up in the air while Joe is sleeping, then the scene where Joe slugs Hoss and is amazed at how good his punch was as Hoss pretends to be knocked out. That is Bonanza; it can make you roll on the floor laughing in one segment of an ep, and then break your heart in another. Oh, the genius of Bonanza!

The saddest ending to me was in the episode "Forever" they pan out and show a picture of Hoss. Little Joe played the part that Hoss was supposed to play but Dan had of course passed away.

Shanklin was a very sad episode ending. The Cartwright ranchhouse is in shambles,Hoss is still severly wounded, and Shanklin had gone pyscho because of the death of his own family by Union Soldiers.

Despite the hatred and anger within himself because of his own family and the Civil War,Shanklin shows a code of ethics about himself as he saves Hoss from certain death.
