A nice runner up in my opinion would be "The Stillness Within"

Joe is blinded in an accident and the doctor doesn't know if his condition will be permanent or temporary. Joe is filled with self pity, he feels useless and refuses to see
anyone outside of the family because he doesn't want their pity. In desperation Ben hires a teacher from the institute for the blind to come and help Joe When Miss Dobbs arrives to teach Joe, Ben is surprised to learn she is blind also . Miss Dobbs tells Ben it would be better not to tell Joe she is blind until after she has had a chance to work with him. Joe is furious when he meets Miss Dobbs because he believes his sight will return, so therefore he doesn't need to learn the things she wants to teach him. Eventually Joe and Miss Dobbs form a bond as she shows him that blind people can be useful. Miss Dobbs tells Ben it would be best for Joe to return with her to the institute, where he could feel useful being a teacher Ben is deeply saddened at the thought of loosing his youngest son but agrees because he knows it would be best for Joe. One Morning Joe wakes up and screams for Ben and Hoss to come to his room. When they enter he tells them he can see! All three men have tears in their eyes as they realize Little Joe will be all right.
Joe races to tell Miss Dobbs and only then does he discover she is blind.

What could have a sadder ending than Erin? Hoss finally met his soulmate and then she is gone. Tragic ending to the best love story in all of Bananza. If they had kept her there would have been no need for Jamie. What potential for some great stories. UGH !! adamseve

I agree! That was for sure one of my favorite. Very sad, I loved the Erin episode a lot! Forever comes to mind too. That was really sad. They said Michal Landon was really crying over Dan Blocker death, not his new wife. The episode itself was sad, the end of Forever was bizzare. Speaking of bizzare, the way Bonanza ended with "The Hunter" was bizzare to me. What a weird episode to use in just axeing it out of primetime. But it's sudden demise and last episode was bizzare.
