Joe, I saw this episode tonight and I agree, it was terrific.

I once wrote in an IMDB thread that I thought The Crucible was one of Bonanza's darkest episodes, and this one had the same feel.

I think one thing that added to feel was there were virtually no extras. I think only six actors were in the entire show--The three Cartwrights, Candy, James Whitmore, and the warden at the very beginning. I probably focused on the terror of the situation more because there weren't any side stories.

Mike made "closet shows" and they only had a small handful of actors in them. Very effective story and Whitmore was very impressed with him.

Tremendous episode, one of the best of the series. Never relaized the fact that there were no extras in the episode, just the principles and Whitmore.

Absolutely one of the best and a testiment to Michael Landon's brilliance.
