David Dortort had classified the 1st eight years as the early classics with the original cast. That is the logical way of looking at it and without any additional characters added on through May of 1967. The ninth year was a transition season that revamped the series as a solid Western and the addition of David Canary. By 1970, one could sense a distance from the early years and going back to a family formula with an aging cast by September of 1970 was about the only idea they had left. Dynamics were different and yes, the loss of Dan was the worst thing. On the other side, Michael Landon was in the twilight era of his career that led him to great success.
