Subject: Favorite 'Bonanza' episodes with fist fights

It's an open hat for the episodes that had the most memorable fights over 14 years.

This thread could easily go a page or more. There were so many excellent fight scenes. I like the one between Hoss and Arnie in The Ape, even though I don't particularly care for that episode. I thought the writers might have had a bad case of lazy-itis and borrowed too heavily from "Of Mice and Men." Another good fight between Adam and a bad guy (don't remember the character's name) in The Spanish Grant.

Opening fight for the Ape man was good, maybe the best. The other two I liked the most were...

The Magnificent Adah with John Regan, an x-fighter who beat up Little Joe, and Hoss fought him while Ben was held back by Adam.

The Duke, the one with the two brothers, which one brother played the uncle on My Three Sons. His taller brother was a prize fighter, but Hoss whipped him in the later rounds.

Those are the only three that come to mind where Hoss encounters some tough fights.

I also liked The Rogue. I was watching it this morning. Hoss and Jim Layton get into a king size fight to see who is king of the mountains. I also liked the fight between Little Joe and James Coburn in the Truckee Strip, but a stuntman was used heavily in that barn fight for Little Joe. That was before Michael Landon did more of his stunts and fight scenes.

It wasn't really a fight, but I liked the ep where Hoss falls in love with the widow who turns out to be a compulsive gambler. When Adam and Joe expose her to Hoss he really let those brothers have it. He always controlled his strength against them, but not that time.

From season nine is "In Defense of Honor" and it had four or more fights expertly staged by Bob Miles (who doubled Lou Antonio). One of the top 10.

"The Wish" and Mike's direction and sense of realism was great. In the barn fight at the end, you can see and feel the great physical strength of Sam and the two townsmen as they go at it (stuntmen Roy Jenson & Jerry Summers). Totally awesome. It went way out there.

In "Forever" you have Joe and Mr. Hanley at the river. Again, Mike and Roy Jenson did it perfectly. The great physical strength of both men and Joe wanting to kill him is apparent as he picks up a big rock and is going to bash his brains out, but doesn't despite Damion's theme of "an eye for an eye."

In 13's "The Prisoners", Joe jumps off the roof of the stable and tackles Hank. The two toss and turn and Joe beats him with a 1-2-3 punch and wins. Mike and Whitney did it all.

...take THAT...and THAT...and THAT!

We should all get together for barroom brawl to determine which Bonanza fight scene was the best.

Seriously, Boanzna had the best fight scenes I've seen in westerns. The closest thing to it might have been "The Wild Wild West" but those were a little too obviously coreographed. It was always Robert Conrad vs. the same three guys.

Who's "Whitney"?

Mike Witney and Mike Landon. Whitney was his real first name.

Well then Leah, you just cut out a huge part of the whole series. Think back on not just how many fights the three sons and even Ben Cartright have been in over 14 seasons, but other things? In fact think about how many times all of them have been stabbed, shot, beat up, run over or otherwise had some close calls with death or the hangmen's rope. The series is at it's roots, very violent and true to life as it was in the days of the Wild West. Little House did a 180 degree turn away the type of action we saw on Bonanza. But for me Bonanza is an experience of nature and pagentry at it's finest. Location, wardrobe and fine acting is what makes Bonanza such a classic in my mind.

Little House was about Laura Ingalls and much different than Bonanza. Mike kept the Western flavor intact to some point.

Andrew, violent and true to life I do know something about.
Part of the reason I like Bonanza is that the gunshot wounds, stabbings, and the like, even fist fights, are not so true to life as they are in more modern TV and movies. But I do believe men are different than women, as a general rule, about liking to see all that stuff. I meam most of you guys even like The Three Stooges. :) Tim and the rest of you who like them, no offense meant. :) I just think most women don't care to have to watch them. :)To each his own.

All of the fistfights mentioned so far here concern combat between men. However, one Bonanza episode showcased a battle between a saloon girl and a well-dressed, arrogant lady. This was a somewhat amusing departure from the customary Bonanza brawl. What was the name of this episode, and in which season was it broadcast?

Also, Leah's comment on violence is quite correct. As she indicates, there are many aspects of Bonanza that women can appreciate apart from the violence. Preferring to concentrate on the host of non-violent elements of Bonanza such as romance, adventure, and comedy, is perfectly understandable. In addition, Leah is right in maintaining that the violence of Bonanza is in soft focus compared to the more disturbing depictions seen in modern television.

"The Gentleman from New Orleans" has the saloon girl (Jean Willes) fighting the lady with the dark hair for the hand of Jean La Fitte. Quite a fight and the saloon gets wrecked (again!).

Kenneth, you verbalized it much better than I did, but yes, that is what I meant. My favorite thing about Bonanza (as I know is true for many other Bonanza lovers)is the wonderful family dynamics of love and loyalty for each oyher.
