The saddest ending to me was in the episode "Forever" they pan out and show a picture of Hoss. Little Joe played the part that Hoss was supposed to play but Dan had of course passed away.

Shanklin was a very sad episode ending. The Cartwright ranchhouse is in shambles,Hoss is still severly wounded, and Shanklin had gone pyscho because of the death of his own family by Union Soldiers.

Despite the hatred and anger within himself because of his own family and the Civil War,Shanklin shows a code of ethics about himself as he saves Hoss from certain death.
