Subject: 'The Strange One'

'The Strange One' re-aired on Saturday on the Encore Western channel. I didn't watch it when it was broadcast earlier in the month, since it was either on or near the fourth of July, and I had guests visiting. Plus, when I looked at it a few days later, it did not seem like a story I was interested in at the time. But this rebroadcast provided me with the opportunity to watch it. I think you really have to look deep at the meaning of the story, and it was obviously inspired by the real-life happenings at Lourdes with Bernadette. If the episode had been banned by Pat Robertson, that makes me wonder if it was banned not because it was anti-Christ in any way, but because it was too-Catholic. I am glad Encore is showing it, since viewers should be able to make up their mind about it. What is wrong about an all-knowing female who uses the gift to help others along a rugged spiritual frontier...?

One of my favorite episodes. Awhile back one of the cable networks (USA channel?) ran this episode with the one in Season 13 starring Joan Hackett, SECOND SIGHT. Both of these dealt with having a sixth sense.

I like it a lot, too, Rita. I think Louise Sorel does a fabulous job conveying the character (she played a gypsy in an episode of 'Big Valley' around this time, so doing unusual characterizations was nothing new to her). But what I really love about this episode is that the dialogue, if you listen closely to it, is very symbolic. The entire story is jam-packed with symbolism and deeper meanings; it requires more than one viewing.
