This was surprising news to me, especially since the series was originally on NBC. I also could not figure why they would put it all online, as it could cut into sales of the DVD set. But then I see there are advertisements, so I guess there is revenue to be made.

It's pretty cool though, having the entire series online at your whim, provided your net connection is fast enough, lol.

Paramount Pictures has owned Trek since 1967. NBC made the deal to broadcast the series. That's all. A movie studio always takes better care of a TV series than some crappy TV company can muster. If NBC had made Star Trek, it wouldn't be available on DVD at all, just like Bonanza isn't. There would be lost copyrights, too.

You can thank Lucille Ball and Gene Roddenbery for Trek and Paramount for taking good care of it (sans the lame Rick Berman). There are some big Trek promotions this year.
