One time I got burned good when I hiked to Leavitt Lake (see Sonora Pass photo gallery #1 on the site) and by the time I came down, my long hair was strawberry blonde! My skin got burned good. That was in Aug 1993 and at 11,000 feet up, you have no protection.

My Parent's Made Me Wear Sun Blocker , Cowboy Hat , Chap's and Jacket in 100 Degree Heat.
I Boiled Like A Cooked Pork Roast.
Out Riding That Bloomin'Fence Line.
I Got Over Heated And Passed Out and Slid out of the saddle under my Horse.
Thank Goodness that provided Shade. (Horse Shadow)

They Made me bring a Spritzer Bottle with me to spray my face. (Like that helped)
