I've been reading all of the posts regarding Samantha Tajik not making the semis, and that she was plastic and it was no suprise not hearing her name called during the finals, re-creating Natalie clones...and how Canada doesn't have much to choose from, etc, etc, etc.
There is some truth to everyone's points. However, I think that Canada does have some truly gorgeous girls, but they just aren't interested in competing, or the pageant scene doesn't appeal to them.
With the disclusion of Samantha Tajik during the live telecast, it's true, there was no surprise there. She rocked the preliminaries and did her best. But there will always be other contestants that will do better. But I truly believe that she did have that international appeal as well....whether or not she made the finals, I think Sam did her best and that's all what we could ask for, when representing the country.
As for repeats in the next edition of Miss Universe Canada, there will definitely be a batch of girls who want to try again and win it. Lina Lombana, Aleksandra Malkin, Genida Prifti, Claudia Olejnik....I'm sure will re-enter. Will they win? 80% chance...but no guarantee.
Anyways, Miss Universe 2008 is over. Venezuela, who was my favorite for the crown won....just like when I called it for Canada in 2005. CONSISTENCY, presence, and confidence, the minute she steps in the host country is the main key.
Natalie had it, Alice had it, Zuleyka, Riyo, all of them....
and we need to find another girl that will do that!

- Very true... I'm just bored of the same look we keep seeing.. the dark black/brown hair, european background- Natalie, Alice, Samantha all look the same. Inga with darker hair would be the same she reminded me of Natalie. Alexandra, Genida Prifi all those girls look the same... It's getting boring! Look at this years Miss Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela and DR, if you didn't hear them speak they look like they are from North America (Canada or US). I think Canada just needs a whole different type this year..maybe a Jennifer Hawkins type, she is so fresh!! (NT) -- Canada cmon!!, 17:35:13 07/22/08 Tue
According to you all people with BROWN HAIR look tha same? Samantha is originally from Iran, and I don't know if you've studied Geography in school, but Iran is NOT in Europe. And Jennifer Hawkins is a European type too, just blonde. Instead of saying all this NON-SENSE, you could've said that you wish next year MUC to be a blonde for a change or from East Indian, African, or Asian background. (NT) -- But if the best girl is a Caucasian brunette again, she should be elected, 17:49:10 07/22/08 Tue
- Easy there! No I wasn't saying a blonde should win, I don't care about hair color.. I just think Natalie, Alice, Sam all had the same look.. hard to put my finger on it but a certain mold because to me they all could pass for sisters, there is no individuality. It would be nice to see a bi-racial MUC, or Asian.. I didn't know J Hawk was european, she has that beachy California girl or Aussie surfer girl look. No need to get defensive! I am just saying as a fan that has watched for years and years, the trend since 2005 has been getting old. Just wouldn't mind seeing something new and fresh, no offense to the beautiful ladies we have had, just not anything different in my opinion and it doesn't seem to be working anymore at Miss Universe. (NT) -- Just an Opinion, 19:24:26 07/22/08 Tue
- Just to add, I thought Venezuela was such a perfect choice this year.. She didn't fit the stereotypical latina mold to me... She has so much personality, charm and a sunny disposition.. I just thought she was fresh and different from any past representatives.. (NT) -- Me again, 19:27:38 07/22/08 Tue
What is not working anymore??? Are you expecting Canada to have Miss Universe every year? Even the power houses like Venezuela, Puerto Rico, etc. don't have such expectations. Everyone knows that if a country has a recent win at MU, it's not going to have another soon...If you are suggesting that Canada should be in the semis every year...that would be nice, but it doesn't happen even for the powerhouses like Venezuela and Puerto Rico...and let the best girl win... and BTW she doesn't have to fit your mold either...Who are you to say that the MUC representatives don't have individuality...? .I find each of them different and unique. (NT) -- so give it a rest and be patient..., 20:49:48 07/22/08 Tue
Mod, Why was my post removed?? All I wrote was that Jennifer Hawkins is from Australia!! (NT) -- geez, 18:42:37 07/23/08 Wed
- We need another Leanne Cecile or Kim Yee. (NT) -- Brent, 22:46:39 07/22/08 Tue
- Thank YOU! We all preach that Canada is so diverse, so lets see it !!! I know Canada has beautiful women of all races! And no one says MUC has to be super tall either.... I do agree taller stands out, but even a beautiful girl 5'7-5'8 would do amazing if she has a beautiful face and stage presence. If we had an Asian MUC for the past 3-4 years we would all be whining there was no diversity. Like Brent said, it is just getting very predictable. (NT) -- Linda, 11:21:49 07/23/08 Wed
- Also, I wouldn't even say I have a "type" I like either.. in 04' I liked Christina Marzec or Natalie, 2005 Gretal Montgomery, 2006 Stacey Mckinney or Angela T. , 2007 Ramona Amiri and 2008 Lina Lombana or Sahar.. I thinkk its a quiet confidence and a very classy regal look. And notice non of my choices even look similar at all. (NT) -- Linda, 11:42:20 07/23/08 Wed
YES ..We SHOULD have Asian MUCs four years in a row if they're the best each year. I can only support the best girl regardless of where she is from and what she looks like. (NT) -- Everyone will have a diff opinion, hence we have judges, 12:09:29 07/23/08 Wed
- Maybe that is the problem, the judges..... I have been to 4 out of 5 of our past MUC pageants and I recognize some of the same faces of judges! Who is picking these judges? That could be why the trend those few repeat judges love that look, which I don't blame them we did get a Miss Universe out of the tall, dark hair international look! Natalie dearest! (NT) -- Linda, 12:32:00 07/23/08 Wed
- It's funny.... you seem to expect Canada to win MU every year... (NT) -- ..., 12:46:36 07/23/08 Wed
- I'm sure none of us want another 23 year drought. (NT) -- Brent, 12:52:46 07/23/08 Wed
- I should add to the above: and if it doesn't happen (the MU win) blame it on the judges or the gilrs who represented Canada. The MU win depends not only on the judges and the girl, but also on timing, politics, business decisions , a bit of luck, and how competitive each year is. (NT) -- there are a lot of variables involved, 12:58:18 07/23/08 Wed
- Don't be ridiculous, no one would expect even a top 5 placement every single year. But the powerhouses (Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, USA) seem to produce strong delegates each year.. And even their girls that don't place, most are shocked they didn't ! If Canada wants to become a powerhouse (which I am assuming BOC wants to considering they are mostly from Latin backgrounds and are heavily involved in the Latin American market) They are certainly not showing Canada to be a powerhouse. (NT) -- Linda, 13:01:06 07/23/08 Wed
- as I said The MU win depends not only on the judges and the girl, but also on timing, politics, business decisions , a bit of luck, and how competitive each year is. (NT) -- there are alot of variables involved, 13:10:29 07/23/08 Wed
- I do agree with that statement. But no luck or politics would have granted 2007 and 2008's representatives a spot in the top 15. I'm sorry to be rude, but they just didn't have it, and I could see that before they even arrived in Mexico or Vietnam. I just think something needs to be changed because after Natalie & Alice, Canadian pageant fans started to see a strong pattern and it was quickly shot downhill in 2007 and 2008. I think our representatives in 2003-2004 were even better choices. And with BOC's connections, training and resources we should not be going backwards. (NT) -- Linda, 13:17:33 07/23/08 Wed
I understand what you're trying to say, but if in 2007 and 2008 the judges went with your choices and these girls didn't make it, then what would you say? Maybe you would find some excuses because you like those girls (btw I like them too) (NT) -- I think is not that simple, 13:31:42 07/23/08 Wed
- I don't really care who wins but as an avid pageant fan and working in the entertainment & media market I have wanted to see Canada's pageant industry get stronger and stronger. I think Canada is incredibly diverse and that should be our angle... Sending the last 4 delegates in a row that are tall, dark brown/black hair, tanned, and european OR exotic international look is not exactly being diverse. Just look at our last 4-5 Miss Universes.. Can you say Amelia, Jen Hawkins, Natalie, Zulekya, Riyo or Dayana look alike? NO way.. and we've even got 3 latinas in there that look totally different. If any country should be reproducing clones it would be Latin American ones! Not Canada! My arguement is that I just wish we could see more diversity.. Take chances! (NT) -- Linda, 13:36:34 07/23/08 Wed
- I desagree...I don't think Canada's reprentatives are clones...and the MU's that you listed they' re all tall and most of them with dark hair...You only see in them what you like to see in order to prove your point, and I don't consider our last 4 representative clones, they have a lot more differences than similarities. In Canada most people are not interested in pageants, most couldn't care less even after Canada won MU, only pageant fans were excited, and there are not too many in this country in comparison to others (NT) -- If you see a girl you like you could encourage her to enter, 14:08:29 07/23/08 Wed
- We obviously have disagreeing views, but I am sure I am not the ONLY person who thinks our last 4 years have been very similar girls. Natalie, Alice, Inga all 3 born in europe immigrating to Canada at young ages, all tall dark hair (well Natalie is Naturally lighter) but I was shocked they didn't darken Inga's hair, but she resembled Natalie A LOT.. All three of them even speak with a slight european accent.. Alice's being the least noticeable. Sam was tall/dark hair/tanned also, her look was european looking also, she could pass for Italian, Greek, yes she's from Iran, ok fine. She still looks alot like the other girls. And for Miss Universe: Amelia is latin with jet black hair, Jen Hawkins is beachy blond, Natalie dark haired european, Zuleyka is dark hair latin but her background is mixed (mulata), Riyo dark haired Asian (I'd love to see a blond asian lol) and Dayana blondish tanned latina.. Sorry I don't see any similarities here? Am I missing something? (NT) -- Linda, 15:50:28 07/23/08 Wed
- personally I think that your conclusions are based on assumptions, not on facts (NT) -- and that's my opinion, 13:13:29 07/23/08 Wed
Thank you all, it's a great discussion. In every discussion there should be real persons involved. What I am seeing here is just a few 'real' posters like Drew, Brent, Linda, but others are some anonymous posters without identity. Come on guys, if you want to be anonymous it's OK, don't post with your name, use nick-name instead, but please stick to it and use it consistently. It is so disrespectful way to communicate. We are fans after all, not a bunch of migrating internet trolls. BTW, read the forum rules at the top of the page. Once again, I encourage you to introduce yourself as a valid forum contributor with a handle. Well, starting myself, I am a long time pageant lover from Ontario and my nick-name is (NT) -- Jane, 14:08:04 07/23/08 Wed
- Wow.....we've sparked up a little bit of a debate! I think that Canadian girls can be just as consistent as powerhouse countries in Miss Universe. But what type of girl are we looking for? That's the question! It has nothing to do with looking alike or not, it's more to do with a girl that will pack a punch the minute she arrives in the host country. Personally, I thought Sam had a chance, and I don't think she looked like past contestants. But with saying that, Sam was up against a strong group of girls who really wanted it. That's what we need-a girl who wants to win, who is consistent, yet likeable and to add the cherry on top: beautiful. Natalie, Leanne, Neelam, Kim, Alice-examples of determination! All of our opinions are going to differ, no matter what. I wanted Sahar to win-and alot of people will disagree with me. But Sam put forward a fight in a tough field of competitors, and I honestly think that she wasn't too far off ranking..... (NT) -- Drew, 19:02:21 07/23/08 Wed
- After seeing the prelims, Samantha did great. However, from her first interview on ET Canada, I knew she would not place. I thought she lacked a tremendous amount of personality and I thought she wasn't very articulate, and knew she didn't have a chance. I wouldn't have crowned her, and it makes me think what kinds of questions do they ask in the interview process. It makes me ask how they can go from a Natalia to a Samantha in just a few short years.....bad judging. Pick judges that are thinking of the next step...can the girl compete, and represent our country. (NT) -- just curious, 21:46:38 08/01/08 Fri
