Miss Canada Pageant 1989 Program.

This program was given to all contestants and the audience at the Miss Canada Pageant 1989. Most Canadians have never seen this booklet. I want to thank Carolyn Barkhouse (Miss Nova Scotia, 1989) who allowed me to copy this program.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever given pageant requirements for the Miss Division any consideration. Personally speaking, until this very moment I have never really given any thought to the fact that women over the age of 18 who have given birth to a child can't compete in Miss Pageants. Why is this? Why the discrimnation against women who are Single mothers?

Is the show over yet? What are the results in MUC 2010? According to some forummers on the missosology forum, Elena Semikina was crowned as MUC 2010. Does anyone have the complete results? If so, congratulations to Elena...and again, Denis Davila, thank you for ignoring most of Canada and focusing strictly on GTA.

'I don’t think it is fair at all'

By DON PEAT, Toronto Sun

The beauty queen contestant jilted by Miss Universe Canada says “it’s not fair” pageant organizers dumped her after seeing a nude ad she filmed for an infidelity website.

Vowing she has “nothing to hide,” Sophie Froment, 21, asked what’s wrong with her taking it all off for an Ashley Madison ad while contestants wear next to nothing in bikinis for the swimwear portion of the pageant.

“I don’t think it is fair at all,” Froment told the Sun in an interview Sunday. “They make us go on a stage wearing bikinis and that’s OK to them.

“I don’t think I did anything wrong ... I wasn’t doing porn.”

Froment was sent packing by the pageant Saturday, the same day the Sun ran a front page story about her steamy ad for AshleyMadison.com - a website that bills itself as a place where married people looking to have an affair can connect.

After they decided to send her packing, organizers drove her to the bus station in downtown Toronto. They left her with $100 for her ticket back home to Gatineau, Que. and meals, she said.

Rather than hitting the road, she called Ashley Madison.

In one of the versions of her ad filmed last fall, Froment strips naked and romps around in bed with a man.

A few months after that ad was filmed, she signed up for the Miss Universe Canada competition.

Because contestants sign a form saying they’ve never appeared nude, that ad - which an anonymous tipster pointed the Sun to online on Friday - was enough for Miss Universe Canada to give her the boot.

“I’m a woman, I’m not scared of my body and I love my body,” Froment said. “There’s nothing wrong with me showing skin.”

Froment said the naughtier version of the ad was shot for Playboy TV but it was never used and she simply forgot about it.

“I made a mistake basically,” she said. “I didn’t know that it existed ... I guess I forgot it, I guess I didn’t pay attention enough which is why I signed the contract.

“It wasn’t on purpose, I wasn’t trying to do anybody wrong or anything like that.”

Speaking for the first time since she was ditched, Froment said Ashley Madison has been really supportive of her since the pageant affair broke out. The company arranged media interviews for her inside their Yonge and Eglinton office on Sunday. The University of Ottawa law student said she is still mulling a job offer from the company as a translator made this weekend.

Despite the job offer and her work last year in the Ashley Madison TV commercial, Froment said getting kicked out of the pageant was not a marketing ploy.

“If people want to believe it’s a publicity stunt, it’s their choice, I mean I can’t be in everybody’s head and say, ‘No, that’s not what it is,’” she said.

Pageant organizers haven’t seen the last of Froment.

The former contestant vows she’ll be in the audience at the Miss Universe Canada finale Monday.

“I’ll be there (Monday) cheering for the girls,” she said. ”I’m going to wear my evening gown that I won’t get to wear for the pageant, but I’ll be there and have a blast.”

Beauty contestant too hot for pageant
Star of sexy commercials gets boot from Miss Universe Canada
By TAMARA CHERRY AND DON PEAT, TORONTO SUN
Last Updated: June 12, 2010 1:39pm

A Miss Universe Canada hopeful who starred in commercials for an infidelity website is out of the running, a pageant spokesman said Saturday.

The news comes the same day the Sun published a story about a series of racy AshleyMadison.com ads starring 20-year-old Sophie Froment.

Pageant spokesman Andrew Lopez said an official statement outlining the reasons for Froment's removal from the pageant would be released Saturday afternoon.

Reached on her cell phone Saturday, Froment declined comment.

"No, not right now, thank-you. I'll speak tomorrow," she said.

The pageant wraps up Monday in Toronto. One of the judges is Sun columnist Mike Strobel.

A U.S. spokesman for Miss Universe had “no comment” Friday on the brewing controversy.

While at first Miss Universe Canada said the pageant also had “no comment,” later Friday, Denis Davila, national director of Miss Universe Canada, told the Sun he was shocked to see the Ashley Madison videos.

“We stand for the opposite of what this website, Ashley Madison, stands for,” Davila said. “We do not support, endorse or agree for anything that they (Ashley Madison) stand for.”

Davila said he still had to speak with Froment and questioned the affair, involving a contestant, as an “easy way” for Ashley Madison to pretend to be associated or link themselves to the pageant.

“Class is elegance is something we always maintain,” Davila said. “I am a little disappointed to see what is happening right now. I wish (Miss Universe Canada) could be a vehicle for people to promote humanitarian causes that are important to them.”

Under the rules, all contestants have to sign a waiver when they enter the pageant confirming they have never appeared nude and won’t do anything to harm the reputation of Miss Universe Canada. Women are told from day one that there are three reasons for automatic dismissal — nudity, drugs and eating disorders.

“I will be talking to her later (Friday) evening,” Davila said. “She never told us anything we should be aware of in this regard.

“I don’t know if somebody used her image or her body or when this was done.”

Froment’s biography on the Miss Universe Canada site describes the Gatineau, Que., woman as “not just your ordinary girl; she is the girl next door.”

She is studying law at the University of Ottawa, has two jobs and is an actress and model in her spare time, the biography stated.

“Sophie is a hard worker, and especially if she likes what she’s doing, she’ll put all her efforts into it and never give up,” the biography states. “She’s not perfect, but she is a promising woman and always tries her best!”

There are a few versions of the TV commercial.

One featured Froment and a man being caught in bed by his overweight wife, a second, which Ashley Madison tried to submit to be used during the Oscars broadcast, featured a blue-tinged Froment, a nod to the blue-coloured characters of Avatar.

A third video, entitled the sexy commercial, showed Froment in just her panties and a man’s shirt.

Steph Davidson, a spokesman for Ashley Madison, said another video, found online by the Sun, that includes more shots of the couple shedding their clothes, was not used in any ad campaign.

Davidson couldn’t explain why that video was available online.

Ashley Madison president Noel Biderman said Froment had asked him about a possible sponsorship in the lead up to the contest.

“I actually told her that it probably wouldn’t be in her best interest,” Biderman said. “I don’t know who drew the lines together ... I don’t want it to ruin her chances.

“She’s a great girl, she’s super bright, she’s very attractive and she’d probably do a great job representing Canada ... regardless she’s always welcome in my universe.”

Tiffany Munro, of Edmonton,, speaks at the Miss Universe Canada session at G.L. Roberts High School in Oshawa.

It started off well enough.

Beauty queen Tiffany Munro was talking to Oshawa high school students about body image, saying she put on weight to enter the Miss Universe Canada competition.

Pageant organizers, the 26-year-old said, didn’t want them looking anorexic, “like some little African child with the ribs going on.”

Rumblings and muted jeers erupted from the audience at G.L. Roberts Collegiate and Vocational Institute, and a fellow contestant who had just described her experience in a Rwandan refugee camp gasped in shock.

The event Thursday morning was to have been a chance for the pageant’s 62 contestants to practise their public speaking skills. But Munro, for one, learned a hard lesson of a different sort.

“Skeletons,” the Edmonton native said later. “I meant to say they don’t want us to look like skeletons. But I’m still half-asleep after having to get up at 5 a.m.”

Munro, a filmmaker who has her own production company, said she was apologizing to everyone for the gaffe that “just slipped out.”

African-born Solange Tuyishime, 26, spent much of her time onstage being consoled by another contestant.

“I was hurt” by the reference to “stereotypical images they show on TV,” she said in an interview. “It’s very sad that in 2010 when we make references to the poor, we think of African children, because poverty is everywhere.”

But the “beauty” of the pageant, she added graciously, is that it gives them an opportunity “to learn from each other.”

Expanding on her body image theme, Munro told the 300 Grades 11 and 12 students that she struggled with weight issues, at one point ballooning to 180 pounds. “Dancing around on stage in swimsuits” for the competition might seem “archaic,” she noted, but it shows that they have healthy bodies.

Judges in the Miss Universe Canada pageant, which wraps up Saturday and Monday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, are looking for “someone who has the whole package” of brains and beauty, according to national director Denis Davila.

Most of the 62 contestants, nine of whom are from the Greater Toronto Area, arrived at G. L. Roberts in six-inch stilettos and short skirts. But they quickly wowed the audience with their stories of achievement and messages of hope and inspiration.

“Be proud of who you are. Be proud of your culture,” urged Ashley Callingbull, 20, a Cree woman who said she was representing aboriginal and Canadian women. Stereotypes suggest she should be “a failure, a drunk, a drop-out, on welfare,” she said. “But I’m here promoting a healthy lifestyle. I’m in the best shape of my life.”

One woman spoke passionately about her uncle, a newspaper editor in Yemen who was assassinated for speaking out: “He taught me some things are worth dying for.”

Tuyishime, who said all she was left with in Rwanda was the instinct to survive, urged the students to believe in themselves and get a good education: “Your power is greater than you think. Your dream is what you make it.”

Paisley McNab, 19, went back in time to answer one student’s question about who she’d most like to meet.

“Shakespeare,” she responded. “I love reading and I love Shakespeare. It’s fun to try and figure out what he’s saying.”

Miss Universe Canada not pleased with contestant’s steamy TV commercials.

Patty Winsa Staff Reporter

Sophie Froment after she was kicked out of the Miss Universe Canada beauty pageant because, organizers said, she breached pageant rules by posing for a series of steamy TV commercials promoting a website that engineers and facilitates affairs.

A beauty pageant that requires contestants to show some skin in the bathing suit portion has thrown out a competitor for showing too much of it.

Sophie Froment was dismissed from the Miss Universe Canada pageant on Saturday after some steamy television commercials she did for Ashley Madison — a dating website for men and women seeking an affair — were leaked to organizers.

The company’s website advertises a 100 per cent “affair guarantee.” Last December its “Life is short. Have an affair” advertising campaign was rejected by the TTC’s advertising review committee because it didn’t meet community standards.

Although Froment, a 21-year-old law student, is currently featured in a U.S. television commercial for the company wearing lingerie, the ads in question were never broadcast. But someone — Froment says she doesn’t know who — posted them online. In one commercial, Froment is topless and lying on her stomach on a bed with a man. In another, she’s kissing him.

A statement on the Beauties of Canada website, which produces the Miss Universe Canada, says Froment was dismissed because she “made some career choices that are not compatible with the image of women that our organization tries to promote; and which would disqualify her from representing Canada at the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant.”

The organization’s home page features a reclining woman in a skimpy bikini.

The statement goes on to say that “it would be unfair to her to have her compete in such circumstances, and it would be distracting for the rest of the delegates; each of whom have worked very hard to pursue their aspiration of becoming Miss Universe.”

Froment says that on Friday night, organizers called her into a meeting and told her that she had breached her contract and asked her to do the “honourable” thing and quit. But the Ottawa resident refused.

“I have two dreams. I want to be a lawyer and I want to be an actress and a model,” said Froment. “It was a job.” She continued, “I’m proud of who I am. And proud of what I do.”

On Saturday morning, Froment says she left her airport hotel room, where she’d been staying since the contest began June 7, to go to the theatre for rehearsals. But a security guard and a chaperone met her in the lobby and ushered her back up to her room where she was told her to pack her bags.

Froment was driven downtown to the bus station, where they offered to buy her ticket back to Ottawa. When she refused to leave, they left her there with $100, she says.

But Froment isn’t going away. Her father, who planned to attend the ceremony, is sending her his ticket from Ottawa. Froment says she’ll be there Monday in her evening gown to cheer on the 20 finalists.

Booted from the Miss Universe Canada competition because she had appeared in commercials for a website that promotes infidelity, Gatineau resident Sophie Froment still plans to be in attendance tonight when they crown the winner in Toronto.

"I might even end up wearing the gown that I didn’t get a chance to wear. I think it might be a good opportunity," the uOttawa student said yesterday after being informed Saturday that she was disqualified from the competition for appearing in commercials for AshleyMadison.com, a dating website for people who are married.

A statement from Miss Universe Canada said that, "unfortunately, (Froment) had made some career choices that are not compatible with the image of women that our organization tries to promote."

Froment is not interested in returning to the competition, but said it was unfair since the commercials were just part of a job.

"It’s OK for girls to go on stage in bikinis during the competition, but it’s not OK for me to act and model? It’s a character, it’s nothing more," she said.

"It’s not like I was shooting porn. It’s acting."

Miss Universe? Or Jerry Springer?

Man, oh, man, this pageant has turned into a beaut.

And I feared I’d fall asleep on the judges’ panel.

“Well,” says la creme of beauty queens, 2005 global winner Natalie Glebova, “it is entertainment, after all.”

No kidding, Nat.

Miss Universe Canada 2010, which wraps Monday night at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, is making the G20 look like a boy scout jamboree. To wit:

Our front page told you yesterday how contestant Sophie Froment, 20, of Gatineau, Que., starred in a soft-porn ad for the cheaters’ site, Ashley Madison.

We all wish we had the cojones — and the abs — to do that, but, sadly, Miss Universe Canada frowns on such things. Beauty pageants have enough trouble fending off snobs and women in sensible shoes.

Pageant director Denis Davila had a chat with Ms. Foment, sorry (ITL)Froment(ITL), and she exited before the preliminaries last night. As her bio says: “She’s not perfect, but she is a promising woman and always tries her best.”

Perfect timing for the Ashley Madison marketing department, eh? Hmm.

So we’re down to 61 contestants.

One of them is Maria Al-Masani, 25, of Ottawa. She grew up in Yemen.

Muslims are not big on bikinis. So last night Ms. Al-Masani was to wear a wrap in the swimsuit prelims.

“I’d rather be caught dead,” she has opined.

How do you solve a problem like Maria? You cover her up.

Otherwise, Ms. Al-Masani is no shrinking violet.

She runs a PR business, which in March announced her as a “direct descendent of Prophet Mohammed.

“Yemen,” she said, “is a conservative Islamic country better known for the underwear bomber.

“I grew up wearing a niqab, watching Miss Universe on TV. I love breaking stereotypes.”

Next on the hot seat is Tiffany Munro, 26, of Edmonton.

This week, she told high school kids in Oshawa how the pageant discourages any hint of eating disorders — “like some little African child with the ribs going on.”

This brought gasps from entrant Solange Tuyishime, 26, who survived a Rwandan refugee camp.

Solange was comforted by Ashley Callingbull, 21, a Cree beauty whose history includes sexual abuse.

Not to mention, Tiffany, as a child, suffered from dyslexia.

Sixty-two women, 62 stories.

Much ado, and the pageant has barely started.

Which brings me back to Ms. Glebova, 28, the drop-dead Russian turned Torontonian who won the whole enchilada, Miss Universe 2005. She returns as MC.

She sure looks fine in an orange Ted Baker dress and five-inch Aldo heels.

Dressed to kill for the Miss Mayhem pageant?

“I don’t know what’s happening this year,” she tells me. “Maybe it’s good for Miss Universe. Spices things up, and shows people are paying attention. (Pageant owner) Donald Trump will love it.”

Natalie married a Thai tennis pro and lives in Bangkok. She’s no stranger to turmoil, and not just the recent riots, which spared her leafy surburb.

Miss Universe is big-time in Thailand. She’s a star — and gossip fodder, including plastic surgery rumours. (Only if God is a surgeon). Three years ago, she had to deny reports she had mocked the traditional wai greeting.

Wai, oh, wai? The perils of a pageant.

Remember the overzealous civil servants who barred Natalie from Nathan Phillips Square because she was a “stereotype?”

The last laugh is hers. Her house has a very big swimming pool. She’s working on a skin care line and a health and travel show.

“Cheap shots still upset me. I owe my success to this. People don’t understand beauty queens.”

So on to the finale. I sure hope there’s no porn star or stripper or Mafia moll or transvestite on that stage.

I can’t take much more drama.

Hi!

I was at prelims tonight. They were excellent. Another well-produced great show.

Fast track winners:
Tiffany Munro - Miss Elegance
Belinda Kim - Best Body and Audience Choice
Ashley Avery - People's Choice
Netasha Ramganesh - Best Catwalk

My front runners are the usual crew, however there are at least a dozen other amaaaaaazing young women who are ready for the crown on Monday.

I had a very, very nice night meeting up with old friends (hi, Vlad!) and lovely people I hadn't seen for a while.

I'll be there on Monday and will try to get the results up.

Do you think that Sophie knew going in to this that it would get out about her Ashley Madison spread (punny I know) and she entered knowing that it would get out and she would get attention?
Do you think she entered MUC to win the title and crown and represent the country etc. or do you think she had a bigger plan, of gaining her 15 minutes of fame by not winning as is so common in the USA?
Do you think she leaked the info herself?
Why dont BoC better screen thier delegates? Tiana Loxxx was questionable enough that you would have thought they would gotten a better handle on it by now...or do you think they care about 'bad press' knowing that 'bad press' is better than no press and that bad press gets more attention than good?

By MIKE STROBEL, TORONTO SUN

Mike Strobel gets a sly look from Miss Universe 2009 winner Mariana Valente. Sun columnist Strobel is asked to judge a lot of beauty pageants ... for some reason. (JACK BOLAND/Toronto Sun files)

Lately, some of you think my column is getting a little — what’s the word? — hormonal. Hot. Horny.

Even the evil elves who pen our snappy responses to letters have noticed the trend.

“Strobel’s found his sweet spot this week,” they smirked on Thursday’s editorial page. “Somewhere between profanity and Sarah Palin’s apparently fake bosoms.”

The elves have a point. A sample of my other recent columns: Cougar Dating Site Gagged By Google! Send Your Ex A Gift of Pubic Lice! Babes Demand Better Bathrooms! Toronto Needs Red Light District!

My own mother now claims she has never heard of me.

Sex is an easy rut to fall into, so to speak.

One saucy column leads to another and pretty soon you’re sending letters to Penthouse on the side.

This morning I vowed to tone it down.

Opine about G8 security costs again, I figured. (Nope. That’s about getting screwed.)

Okay, how about the Mississauga hazings? (Uh-uh. That was bondage and spankings.)

The Leafs’ new status as the NHL’s biggest losers? (Getting screwed AND sado-masochism.)

See what I mean? Can’t avoid it. I’m in danger of becoming a one-trick pony. (What? A palomino prostitute with a single john?)

Anyway, I mutter to myself, no more babes, boobs or bodaciousness for a while. At least until my love life settles down.

So I begin to type: “The European Union is mulling over options in the debt crisis ...”

Then, whoa, suddenly I remember. It’s prime beauty pageant season!

I’m judging Miss Universe Canada this weekend. Then Miss Hooters on Tuesday.

Sorry. The European economy will have to wait.

Instead, my thoughts on beauty pageants. I like ’em. I think they empower women. They spawn self-confidence, charity and careers.

Diane Sawyer, Halle Berry, Vanna White, Mary Hart and Michelle Pfeiffer were once beauty queens.

We celebrate Stephen Hawking for his God-given brain. Why not celebrate Miss Hooters for her God-given ...

Besides, since when are brains and beauty mutually exclusive?

I’ve judged more than a dozen pageants. I’m no more likely to bump into a bimbo there than I am at a political rally, especially if it’s NDP.

Despite what women in sensible shoes assume.

My life coach, Robin H-C, who is smart and not hard on the eyes, once told me: “We tend to separate beauty and brains and we don’t generally anticipate finding both in the same package.

“It’s not fair.”

For instance, I was a judge at the Miss DownHome pageant, for Maritime misses who had to bait a hook with a live worm — and look good doing it.

No creepy-crawlies at the Miss Universe Canada pageant, which has its finale on Monday night at the Toronto Convention Centre. Here’s a sample from this year’s resumes:

Bachelor of Science, quadrilingual (that means four languages, silly), trilingual, bilingual, international business degree, law, pre-law, power zen yoga instructor, pianist, Special Olympics coach, Engineers Without Borders, business owner, novelist, certified sommelier, shoe designer, pro figure skater, management degree, psychology degree, sky diver, vegetarian, MBA, RN, CEO.

One bio says: “The size of the universe tends to depress many people and make them feel insignificant, however ... there is an important place to fill and she believes that every piece of humankind plays a vital role of fitting itself into the great jigsaw puzzle.”

Who you calling a bimbo? Sounds more like the Dalai Lama.

I have a hunch Miss Hooters will be an earthier shindig. I judged it two years ago. The evening was billed as “tacky, but unrefined.”

Still, as Miss Hooters International told me that night: “Anyone who says a big bosom means you’re a bimbo, well, they’re the ones who are dumb.”

Take that, you in those sensible shoes.

So, I’m afraid I must subject you to another flurry of sexy columns, fairly dripping with estrogen, testosterone and pheromones.

Fear not, though. A change in tone is at hand. I’m off to safari in Kenya next week.

I hear it’s rutting season for the wildebeest.

Mike Strobel’s column runs Wednesday to Friday, and Sunday.

Hello all,
I want to attend the Miss Universe Canada 2010 in Toronto this weekend (Prelims and/or finals). Unfortunately the MUC website is quite... useless with regards to info. : The only option appears to be to have tickets mailed, and there's no info about seat selection, etc. Is there a better way to order tickets, and have them held for WillCall at the venue?

Also wondering about typical dress for the audience, and whether cameras are allowed (ideally larger SLR types).

Thanks so much :)

BY CARYS MILLS, THE WINDSOR STAR MAY 22, 2010

Summer Ross is freaking out.

A blue gown the aspiring beauty queen eyed recently in Michigan has been snapped up by someone else.

Having the right dress is critical. The gown she wears when she competes in the Miss Universe Canada pageant in June will be worth one-third of her total score.

And one contestant has a $10,000 dress.

"I was freaking out, like waking up freaking out about my evening gown," Ross said.

The making of a beauty queen is a multi-faceted affair. After the gown, there's the task of finding sponsors, learning how apply makeup and how to walk gracefully.

"I don't know if I realized how much work goes into pageants," Ross said.

Even though she was named after 1975's Miss USA, Summer Bartholomew, Ross clearly has a lot to learn about the beauty business.

Unlike many of her competitors, it will be her first pageant. At 26 - the pageant's age limit - the pressure's on for her to get it right in one shot. The University of Windsor biology student found out only two months ago, months after other contestants, that she had a spot in the pageant after applying for it as a lark.

"One day I was literally just bored and thought I'd look up beauty pageants," Ross said.

She practises her walk whenever she can, whether it's Walmart, a mall or the laboratory where she works.

She was told to perfect her eyebrows, wear false eyelashes and get a French manicure.

She said the constructive criticism helps because she wants to know what it will take for her to win. "I'm not so good with my makeup techniques and stuff," Ross said.

"You want your lips to really pop for the camera," Deborah Dufault, a medical esthetician at Esteem Medical Esthetics, said while lining Ross's lips.

Dufault is teaching Ross how to create her own daytime and evening look and creating a personalized checklist of makeup to apply.

Last week Ross had semi-permanent eyelashes applied to avoid having to apply them every day. The procedure took about an hour and a half.

Donna Jezdic, founder of Esteem Medical Esthetics, has known Ross since she was 16.

"It's nice to have someone represent Belle River," Jezdic said. "She's young and motivated."

Ross said when she met with the director a second time he was pleased she'd been working on his suggestions.

But she said she still needs to work on her walk since other contestants have been working on theirs for years.

Olivia Gurun, a 2004 Miss Universe Canada delegate from Windsor, is Ross's walking instructor. "I think Windsor has a good chance at bringing the crown home this year," Gurun said

Ross has tried to cut out most cheese, chocolate and some carbs from her diet.

"Being involved has made me much more health conscious, I take lots more vitamins, I eat lots more green things and I stay away from pasta and breads," she said.

Ross, who stands 5-feet-11-inches, has rarely worn heels. Now she wears them everywhere -- including a pair of four-inch pumps with a zebra print -- to practise her walk.

Unlike most of the other contestants Ross didn't have glamour shots handy, so she recruited some friends -- Milica Moric and Alexsandra Wadas -- to help her with a photo shoot. In a dimly lit bathroom in the basement of the Boom Boom Room, a downtown nightclub, Moric and Wadas dressed and made up Ross.

A few hours before the club's dance floor filled up, Ross was posing in a booth while Wadas shot photos.

The photos are being used to promote Ross's fashion show fundraiser, "Vying for the Crown."

Ross and the selected models will be at Per Bacco Ristorante, 1199 Ottawa St., on Wednesday starting at 6 p.m., modelling clothes from Envy Boutique and His and Hers Wear and Bridal. Food is provided by Per Bacco and tickets are $30, available at the restaurant.

KRISTIN RUSHOWY
EDUCATION REPORTER

They won’t strut their stuff in strapless ball gowns — or bikinis — but 62 Miss Universe Canada contestants will prep their Q&A skills for an upcoming pageant with the help of Oshawa high school students.

During a practice run on June 10 — just days before the Miss Universe Canada pageant — the contestants will answer questions in front of about 300 senior students at G.L. Roberts high school. Some queries will be from the students themselves, who will also critique the women’s responses.

While the principal at the school touts the women as positive role models — many indeed are accomplished university students — connections to a contest where women are judged primarily on their looks isn’t sitting pretty with some.

“The girls that are involved (in the pageant) are certainly smart and they are ambitious . . . but what I find offensive is that they are required, in order to win, to parade around in a bathing suit. I don’t know that in 2010 there’s a place for that anymore,” said Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper.

While she is not sure if having them visit a school is something the board agrees with — “I don’t know if it’s something I would do” — in the end, she added, “(students) are smart enough to think for themselves.”

Andrea Pidwerbecki, spokesperson for the Durham District School Board, acknowledged the event is “unusual,” but said it was sparked by a visit to G.L. Roberts earlier this year by a tiara-clad Mariana Valente, current Miss Universe Canada.

The principal had previously met the beauty queen at a Toronto event.

“This woman is an excellent role model for students, she moved to Canada (from Brazil), learned English-as-a-second-language, is a university student and has aspirations to be a teacher,” said Pidwerbecki.

“Yes, it is a unique event and while not everyone agrees with the format of a pageant, our experience with Miss Valente’s visit was that it had a positive impact on the students and the school community.”

It’s unclear if Valente will be at the event next week.

Principal Deborah Johnson said the day will begin by drawing the names of eight to 10 contestants who describe the “geography” of their hometowns.

“They’ll also talk about their personal message, and their personal messages are always really positive, they connect so beautifully to the kids” through discussions on environmental issues, career planning and “also about having the confidence to stand up and believe in yourself.”

Some of the questions are preplanned and typical pageant fare, but Johnson said she expects some teens will ask the women about body image.

The website for Miss Universe Canada, which is www.beautiesofcanada.com, says more than 10,000 students have been a part of its “inspirational speaking tour” to schools.

The big question

Pageant Q&A with Mariana Valente, crowned Miss Universe Canada 2009:

Has the recession affected you? If so, how?

“I think the recession has affected not only me but everybody in the world, but I believe that our world adjusts to every difficult time that comes.

"So I'm sure not only Canada but the whole world will be able to get through this and learn from this experience. Thank you."

UVic grad Fawnia Robitaille will be taking time away from serving to compete in Miss Universe Canada this June. Her employer, Old Spaghetti Factory, is one of her sponsors.

University grads feel it all the time.

The glory of the degree mixed with the reality of remaining in the part-time job that got them through university.

What to do next?

For Fawnia Robitaille, striving to become a beauty queen between shifts serving at the Old Spaghetti Factory was the obvious choice.

The 22-year-old Gordon Head resident is among the 63 women selected nationally to compete for the Miss Universe Canada title in Toronto next month.

The Canadian winner will go on to the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas.

“Because of the economy I couldn’t really find a job [related to my education],” Robitaille said.

“I’m planning on going back to UVic in September to do my second undergrad and my pre-recs for med school. It’s going to be a long haul.”

Robitaille speaks three languages – French, Cantonese and English – and has a bachelor of science degree from the University of Victoria, with a minor in public administration.

Biochemistry and microbiology will fill her timetable in the fall, so it was only natural she spend her year off by working out every day and promoting herself during an extensive interview process to land a spot in Toronto.

“A lot of people hold that image of beauty pageants as having girls who don’t have a lot of education, but I think it’s changing. Most of the girls hold degrees. One girl from B.C. has her master’s.”

Meeting new people and traveling topped her reasons for competing in the Donald Trumph event.

Robitaille grew up watching Miss America pageants on television, but she didn’t foresee competing until she came across the Miss Universe Canada website. She has since worked off 20-pounds at the gym and boosted her confidence through training and workshops with her agent.

“They interviewed about 300 girls from B.C. and the president took 15 of us,” Robitaille said of her initial invite to T.O.

On Sunday (June 6), she leaves behind the support of her friends, family and co-workers for one-week of intense pre-show training with the other contestants. They’ll be rehearsing the walks and dance numbers of the Broadway-style show for six hours each day.

“I used to dance so it doesn’t make me that nervous, but dancing in heels is a completely different thing,” she said, previewing a tiara-worthy smile.

Now on the eve of her departure, Robitaille is nervous and modest about the whole endeavor. (She forgot to mention that the public can vote for her online at www.beautiesofcanada.com to ensure her a spot in the top 20.)

She credits her boyfriend Karl Makepeace for reminding her to work out and gives props to her sponsors.

Asked what she will perform during the talent segment of the show, Robitaille shies from the question, insisting that component is optional.

However, if you tune into ET Canada June 14 and spy an evening-gown clad beauty, balancing an arm-load of plates on a service tray, you won’t have to ask who’s on stage.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 8, 2010 --
The Miss World Canada 2010 contest finale was held last night at Chandos Pattison Auditorium in Surrey BC by new Vancouver-based franchise-holders, Upstage This! Productions. The three hour long event came to a less than satisfactory end. The over-representation of BC candidates, poor choreography, missed cues and questionable voting criteria were only among a few of the major qualms. The Miss World Canada 2010 pageant featured 32 fantastic candidates; 12 of whom became semifinalists (6 reserved for special award winners and 6 picked by the judges) and 3 whom moved on to the finalist positions. At the end, Denise Garrido was Crowned - but the pageant was wrought with controversy.
Six (6) semifinalists were supposed to be reserved for the category award winners: Talent, Top Promotions, Top Fundraising, Best International Costume, Swimsuit and People's Choice. So who were the winners that were guaranteed a spot among 12 semifinalists? Sarah Davidson-Gurney (talent), Dona Sharma (Promotions), Poonam Punni (Fundraising), Sofia Teleguina (International Costume), Denise Garrido (Swimsuit) and Ziyah Karmali (People's Choice). But Ziyah was not announced to stand among the semifinalists, did not get a chance to answer the semifinalist position to move forward and was not recognized along her peers to the audience. The oversight was immediately brought to the judges attention by audience members but the judges remained unconcerned and the show moved forward without Ziyah. So who were the 12 semifinalists? 5 of the award winners ( Sarah, Dona, Poonam, Sofia and Denise) and 7 others (Angel Bhathal, Sherry Jobani, Sapna Seheravat, Jessica Tsang, Deanna Gold, Sidney Shindle and Lacey Budge).
Immediately after the pageant, President and CEO, Katherine Grefner, privately recognized the oversight to Ziyah and her family but no public announcement has been made. When questioned, the auditor (a woman identifying herself only as Christine) refused to comment. Ron Wear, Mr. World Canada 2010 and judge for the competition, said he was "shocked" and described Ziyah as a "top contender."

To add insult to injury, the plaque awarded to Ziyah for being the 'People's Choice' was misspelled to read 'Peopls Choice' and at a small ceremony this morning organized by Upstage This! Productions (to give the award to the winners) the oversight was not disclosed by pageant organizers to those in attendance and instead was brought to the audiences attention by the pageant host, Tanya Memme (who felt that this was an "injustice"), and Ziyah's supporters.

Katherine Grefner apologized again after the ceremony, in private, for not recognizing the matter. No resolution to the matter has yet been made.

Published Saturday May 22nd, 2010
By LAVERNE STEWART

She has been Miss Fredericton, Miss New Brunswick, Miss Canada International and soon she hopes to be selected as Miss Universe Canada so she can represent this country in the Miss Universe pageant.

Solange Tuyishime, 26, was born in Burundi, Central Africa. She hopes to use her life experience to help encourage others to be the best that they can be and to go after their dreams.

She was a girl when her family managed to escape Burundi's civil war for Rwanda in the early 1990s, only to find more violence, bloodshed and disease there.

They were homeless and hungry while searching for a safe haven from the strife. As refugees, they were crowded into areas with thousands of other displaced families.

Without food, water and sanitation, many, including her great-grandmother, died from diseases such as cholera. She can still hear the sound of gunfire and bullets whizzing through the air. She recalls hunger and thirst. She used to walk 10 miles for water.

But no matter how desperate things were, she says, she always dreamed of a better life and what she wanted to be someday.

"I've always been a dreamer, since I was a little girl. I was lucky because I was a dreamer but there were some kids there who were not dreamers. There are kids today who need someone to look up to. I want them to be able to say Solange made it and so can I."

Tuyishime, her parents and her two brothers arrived as refugees in Kenya where they stayed for a few years. They relocated to Canada in 1996.

After she finished high school in Fredericton, she earned a journalism degree from St. Thomas University in 2005.

She is very proud to be Canadian and she wants to do everything she can to be an example of what's possible in this country for anyone, regardless of their life circumstance.

As Miss Canada International she travelled throughout this country, which she describes as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"You get a sense of what Canada is all about. For me it was an opportunity I will cherish for a really long time."

Her reign as Miss Canada International ended in 2007. At that time she decided it was time to go back to school. In the next two years she earned a masters in public administration at l'Université de Moncton.

Tuyishime has achieved a lot and yet, she says, she believes there is so much more she is capable of and more things waiting for her to accomplish.

In 2009 she started to work for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Then she was transferred to Ottawa where she now works with Industry Canada in the human resources branch where she helps with executive leadership development.

When she isn't working, Tuyishime is preparing herself to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant. She and 62 other contestants have been accepted to take part in the final competition in Toronto on June 7. Miss Universe Canada will be crowned on June 14.

"I really like the idea of representing Canada. I really think what I have done with my life allows me to be proud enough to say that I can be a role model for many young children, women and men who are working very hard and trying to achieve their dreams. I also have a message that I believe that I can share with the rest of the world about universal education, gender equality and helping those who are living in unfortunate circumstances."

To represent this country on an international stage she says it is important that you understand yourself and what you believe in. She is an ambassador for UNICEF Canada, which allows her to speak at fundraising events.

"I am very fortunate to do that. I feel it is one step closer for me to start helping those who are living in unfortunate circumstances. It is one that I hold very close to my heart."

As well as poise and intelligence, Tuyishime also knows she needs to prepare herself for the beauty side of this competition. She exercises six times a week at the gym and she is careful about what she eats. She loves to bake and enjoys making muffins, which she will eat early in the day so she can burn off the calories at the gym.

She wakes at 6 a.m. and heads to the gym. Then she goes to work. By 4:30 she goes back to the gym for exercise classes. She returns home and prepares dinner. Tuyishime calls cooking her therapy. She also loves to prepare African cuisine which includes vegetables, rice and meat.

After dinner she spends a couple of hours replying to email she receives on Facebook and on her website.

By 9 p.m. she likes to watch TV before bed. It's a very full life with little idle time. On the weekend, her schedule is more relaxed but always there is exercise at the gym. Sunday she loves to clean and cook meals for the week. She also likes to watch movies and entertain friends at home.

Tuyishime doesn't take anything in her life for granted and she wants to remind others how lucky they are to live in this country.

If she is chosen as Miss Universe Canada, she says she will have to get ready quickly for the Miss Universe pageant.

"I am 26 and the age limit is 27. If I had the opportunity of actually winning Miss Universe Canada, I would work hard to go all the way. A part of me, in my heart, I believe I can do it."

Tuyishime hopes to someday host a television show and one day be a United Nations ambassador. And, when the time is right, she would also like to be a wife and mother. She has been dating the same man for the past five years. She calls him her partner and a great support system. They met at university.

"He is very different than me. He is very quiet, stable and he never doubted me. I am a very ambitious person and I think it takes a very patient person to be with someone who is so ambitious."

In this order she would like to become Miss Universe Canada, Miss Universe and then add Mrs. to her name. "We have definitely talked about it."

When she can, she enjoys coming home to Fredericton to visit with her parents and brothers. Family holidays are a must, she says.

"Or else mom would cry. Last year I almost didn't make it back for Christmas and I'm the one who was crying."

If she wins Miss Universe Canada she says she wants to come home right away so she can remind herself who she is, where she comes from and the things that make her proud, she says.

"We come from a place where you have to work really hard in life and no matter whether you become number one, number two or number five, you are still proud of who you are as a person. My whole family will always be there for me no matter what. Especially because of what we have been through, we have become very close."

For more information about Solange Tuyishime, go to http://www.solangetuyishime.com/

A few words from those who know her well

"Solange is a very talented and passionate young woman, who had to grow up so quickly throughout dark moments and refused to despair. She looks into the future with her bright eyes and lots of dreams and hope for a better world. I'm very proud of her."

Marie-Françoise Nsengiyumva

Solange Tuyishime's aunt

"When Solange enters a room, she is immediately noticed for her outer beauty. It takes only a few moments in her company, however, to see beyond the exterior and witness the intelligence, compassion, warmth and strength that make up this wonderful young woman."

Noreen Martin

Tuyishime's colleague

"Solange is a dynamic and upwardly mobile young lady who has displayed a resolve that is rarely found in someone her age. She is hard working, conscientious, and focused on making the most of the opportunities that are provided to her.

"She does everything with a grace and charm that is unique to those who come from challenging backgrounds; who strive to prevail over difficult circumstances. She has a heart that aspires to help others - just as she and her family were helped when they relocated to New Brunswick - and remains humble and God-fearing in all the accomplishments."

"Her pride in her Rwandese/African background is a testament to the value she places on things that are important in her life. Her gratitude to Canada - for giving her the opportunity to succeed in life - is a reflection of the compassion she has experienced in her new country.

"She does not take anything for granted and is thankful for what life has blessed her with everyday.

"She continues to strive to give back to the community at large because she knows that 'to whom much has been given-much is expected.'"

"Guess what - I was just asked to go to Miss Universe Canada!" she exclaims to her mother on the phone.

That was 20-year-old Ashley Avery's first reaction when a Miss Universe Canada director told her the news last September. Avery will be among 63 Canadian women competing for the Miss Universe Canada 2010 crown in Toronto this June. She is the pageant's first candidate from Clarenville. She is also this year's only Newfoundlander and Atlantic Canadian.

The candidates will arrive a week prior to the competition, where they will tour Toronto - a novelty for Avery, who has never been there before.

The competition, which will be held on June 12 and 14, consists of a preliminary round of judging in three categories: swimwear, evening wear and interview. The top 20 scorers will then advance to a semi-final round of more swim- and evening wear judging.

The band of beauties will eventually shrink to five finalists who'll face an impromptu interview question. The winner will be crowned Miss Universe Canada and compete for the country at the international Miss Universe 2010 pageant in Las Vegas on August 22.

For the past eight months, Avery's preparation regime ranges from exercising her body at the gym four times a week, to exercising her mind on news and current events; from practicing answers to potential interview questions, to practicing her four-inch heel strut.

Avery has competed in pageants before, finishing in the top 10 of Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador 2007 and the top eight in Miss Newfoundland and Labrador 2009.

She's a volunteer for community organizations like the Clarenville Lions Club Leos, Students Against Drunk Driving, G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital and Students In Free Enterprise Memorial.

Avery was born in Halifax but spent her childhood in five different towns across Newfoundland.

"It's interesting because you're always having to meet new people and trying to fit in... you learn to adapt and every community is different," she says.

"I think it will help when I go to the competition, because I'm the only girl from Atlantic Canada."

Beauty pageantry is often criticized for objectifying women and promoting sexism, but Avery doesn't see it that way.

"I think a lot of people are misinformed about beauty pageants. I don't even know if I'd call them 'beauty' pageants - some of the pageants here in the province have nothing to do with your physical appearance," she says.

"This one does, but I just explain [to critics] that if you're comfortable to walk across a stage in a bikini, you've probably worked really hard... if you're confident about it, then I don't think it's putting down women in any way."

She delves further into the topic of beauty.

"Beauty is more than how you look - it's how you carry yourself, how you treat other people. It's you as a whole, and not just physical."

Reaction from the community has been supportive, according to Avery. People from across the province have called and emailed their wishes of good luck. Her Facebook group now boasts over 3,000 members.

People also show support by voting for her online for the People's Choice Award. The delegate with the most votes will automatically advance to the semi-final round.

Avery, currently in the top 20 for the award, continues to seek votes up until the day of the competition. She says she's even garnering votes from people she's never met.

"Last night [at her sister's high school graduation] I met a lady and she said, 'Ah, you're the girl I've been voting for!'"

Financial sponsors are also behind her, donating and raising funds for her travel expenses and $2,500 entrance fee.

"The Clarenville Lions Club is my biggest sponsor, but I've got all different types," she explains. "Some have lent me things, like dresses for [promotional] photo shoots... Sara Rostotski did my headshots... the Hair Force have been taking care of my hair all year."

Avery, who has never travelled internationally, sees Miss Universe Canada as an opportunity.

"Miss Universe Canada gets to travel the country and the world; she gets to speak to a lot of different people across the country. Of course, she gets to compete in Miss Universe, which is a pretty big deal and a great experience to go there and meet women from all across the world."

Avery not only views this as an opportunity for herself, but for her town as well.

"It's a compliment for the community too. The people who are helping me get to the pageant have never done this before, so it's kind of another way to put Clarenville on the map.

"While I'm up there I'm going to be speaking about Clarenville, my experiences growing up here and how supportive people have been for me."

I heard through the grapevine that former Miss Teen Canada Alissa Banjanovic is to compete again in this years Miss category. http://missteencanadagalaxy2009.com/about.html
She is a stunning girl. How does everyone feel about competing again, even after you've already won a national title? She is quite the contender I must say.

I also read an article written by Brent Colley, a Toronto man who writes about people of success. In March he wrote an article about a Halifax based woman, Brittany Blake, who also seems to be in the running this year for the Miss Canada Galaxy crown. This is the online article, I havent been able to find much for pictures as of yet, theres a note at the bottom of the article that she has a facebook page. She has quite the credentials, I say she is also a great contender.

http://www.articlesbase.com/beauty-articles/miss-halifax-galaxy-brittney-blake-1928950.html

I also heard news of another girl competing but I wont say it yet until I know for sure.
I wonder what the outcome of this pageant will be this year. I wasnt overly impressed with last years pageant girls, a part from Natalie LaPointe. Hopefully we will see some improvement in the actual show itself.

Subject: Beauty pageant gets ugly for Miss Edmonton

ANDREAS MORSE
FOR METRO EDMONTON
May 12, 2010 5:18 a.m.

Miss Edmonton Ziyah Karmali says she never made it to the semifinals lineup at a beauty pageant in B.C. last weekend after another contestant’s name was mistakenly called out.

A beauty pageant turned ugly for a 23-year-old representing Edmonton last weekend in Surrey, B.C.

Ziyah Karmali, Miss Edmonton, was one of 32 women vying for the opportunity to represent Canada in the Miss World 2010 competition in November.

She was doing exceptionally well in the competition, having already won the awards for top fundraiser, top promotions and Miss Friendship, when she was given a golden ticket into the semifinals with the people’s choice award.

But that’s when it all went wrong.

“They gave me the people’s choice award, but they called the wrong girl up to stand in the semifinals lineup,” said a disappointed Karmali. “All my adrenaline started pumping and I was thinking, ‘Maybe they’re going to call me next,’ but they never called my name. It was kind of a mess.”

Karmali and her supporters approached the director, Katherine Grefner of Upstage This!

Productions, after the show. They were told that someone would look into it, but no public announcement has been made and Karmali has not received an apology.

“It was a horrible experience,” Karmali said. “If it’s going to be the same production company putting on the show, I don’t feel respected by them and I definitely won’t be supporting them again next year.”

Metro Edmonton attempted to contact representatives from Upstage This! Productions yesterday but did not get a response.

Canucks stand tall in minds of visiting teenage contestants

By Laura Baziuk, The Province May 6, 2010 3:02 AM

Miss World Canada participants attend stage-presence classes Wednesday at the Holiday Inn on Howe Street in Vancouver. For a full photo gallery, go to theprovince.com.

And now for some playoff insight from some unlikely sources.

Young women from across the country are in Vancouver this week to vie for the title of Miss World Canada.

In between show rehearsals and sightseeing in the run-up to the pageant, the contestants shared their bets for the Stanley Cup winners, and which teams could stand a little tightening up.

The winners for Miss World Canada and Miss Teen Global Canada will be crowned Friday night.

Here are some of their hockey thoughts gathered Wednesday:

Calgary resident Dallas Wylie, 25, cheered for the Flames until their chance at a playoff spot was snuffed out. Now she's backing the Vancouver Canucks.

"[Goalie Roberto] Luongo is stunning," Wylie said. "If he can just stand on his head . . . you're gonna win."

"Canucks are going to dominate," said Yasmin Ali of Langley. While she's been busy preparing for the upcoming pageant, the 16-yearold's friends have been texting with updates on goals and final scores.

Also disappointed that the Calgary Flames never reached the playoffs is Calgarian Kimberley Blocka, 24. "I would love to see Montreal win now," she said. "They're the original."

Nicole Raj, hailing from Surrey, is crossing her fingers for the Canucks, especially for her favourite, Henrik Sedin.

"He's more out there," the 19-year-old said.

Andrea Sarenac, 19, from London, Ont., says her favoured squad (and the Canucks' current rivals), the Chicago Blackhawks, were "a little bit cocky" in their first playoff battle against Vancouver, in which they lost 5-1.

"It was an embarrassment," Sarenac said.

The Hawks need to be more disciplined, she added, and coach Joel Quenneville shouldn't wear down the offence with long shifts.

Jessica Kapadia, 14, is rallying behind the Montreal Canadiens. Kapadia, who was born in Montreal but now lives in Calgary, says no matter how far the Habs get in the playoffs, she'll stand behind them.

"I'm so proud of them," Kapadia said.

Even though 15-year-old Taisa Chernichko roots for the Chicago Blackhawks, she says she holds no grudge against Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo.

"He's amazing," the Calgary native said. "He always bring his best game."

10 per cent of the marks at Friday's event in Surrey will be based on how much money they can raise for Variety children's charity

By Kim Pemberton, Vancouver Sun May 6, 2010 1:26 AM

Miss World Canada executive director Katherine Grefner with her 10-year-old daughter Edan Deley, who is a leukemia survivor.

The Miss World Organization coined the phrase "Beauty with a Purpose" 25 years ago and encouraged contestants to raise funds for children's charities. Now the organizer of Miss World Canada is taking the next step and making it a requirement.

The 32 contestants at Friday's Miss World Canada competition in Surrey will have 10 per cent of their marks based on how much they were able to fundraise for Variety children's charity in honour of 10-year-old leukemia survivor Edan Deley.

The Port Moody girl is the daughter of Miss World Canada executive director Katherine Grefner.

"Our pageant is really trying to drive home the message you need to give back to community. Through my daughter's journey with leukemia I met many families who struggled and relied on Variety children's charity to help them through.

"This is why we chose Variety. Along with competing for the title of Miss World Canada the women are raising funds for a great organization," said Grefner.

The Port Moody native, who was runner-up in the Miss World Canada 1993 competition, said this is the first time a B.C. organization acquired the rights to hold the pageant. Previously, it was held in Toronto.

This year's winner will go on to compete in the Miss World pageant in Vietnam in November.

The Miss World Canada pageant has come a long way since its inception in 1957 when contestants were judged solely on their looks. But since the '70s beauty pageants have gradually shifted to put more emphasis first on talent and now charity work, Grefner said.

"Basically it started off as something to generate tourism, more of a bathing suit pageant. But over the years it has evolved. They're not called beauty pageants any more. The winners are called ambassadors. Our girls are very service oriented."

Grefner said she is aware some might see the emphasis on fundraising as an attempt to cast pageants in a new light, but she said the contestants' desire to help Variety is genuine and gets results.

For the past five years that her company has had the right to hold Miss Teen Global, $100,000 has been raised for the B.C. branch of Variety, she said.

Miss Teen Global and Miss Canada World contestants have raised more than $70,000 for Variety so far this year, she added, and that's before Friday's event at Chandos Pattison Theatre.

One Miss World Canada contestant leading the fundraising charge is 20-year-old Sapna Sehravat of Markham, Ont. Before coming to Vancouver for pre-pageant events and rehearsals this week, Sehravat raised $12,700 for Variety.

The former self-described "high school nerd" said until Grade 12 she had no fashion sense, wore glasses and braces and had little self-confidence.

And while high school may have been a tough place, she said she enjoyed her time by helping others. She tutored fellow students and volunteered in the Best Buddies program to befriend a boy with autism. That involvement later proved beneficial.

"When I said I needed help, everyone who I helped before came through for me. Students were organizing fundraising events. Parents gave me cheques. It just goes to show you the more you give the more you'll get back," she said.

Vancouver Miss World Canada contestant Sherry Jobani, 23, has also been actively fundraising by speaking at different events to raise Variety's profile.

"Knowing this contest isn't just about beauty is exactly what I want. For me beauty is everything you put an effort into doing and not just the outward appearance," said Jobani.

Jobani has already been involved in fundraising for the

BC Cancer Agency and said she was happy when she learned funds raised by contestants would benefit children with special needs.

Contestant Denise Garrido, 23, of Bradford, Ont., said the winner receiving a title will help open more doors when trying to promote a cause.

"It's extremely important. It's an opportunity to be an ambassador, and to have a title that you've earned helps push the fundraising aspect," said Garrido. "It's not just about going on stage and presenting yourself well. It's also what you do to help others."

Abbotsford parent Lisa Radli, whose 18-year-old daughter Shayla is competing in the Miss Teen Global contest, said she feels the fundraising requirement gives the pageant more "credibility."

"To people where much is given, much is expected," said Radli. "We're lucky these young ladies can compete, but to help the children who have health issues is a great focus. The attitude of gratitude is what this pageant is about. It's a win for everyone."

Shayla said now that she has started volunteering for Variety, she plans to continue even after the pageant ends, win or lose.

After growing up around basketball, street hockey and kickboxing, Surrey's Poonam Punni is venturing into the world of pageants

Tom Zillich, Surrey Now
Published: Tuesday, May 04, 2010

Articulate and good-natured, Poonam Punni, 23, seems like an ideal contestant for Miss World Canada.

Poonam Punni is putting a spin on all of those "tomboy" activities of her past. She was a star basketball player at Tamanawis Secondary and grew up playing street hockey with her brothers and many other boys of the neighbourhoods where she has lived, in Newton and North Delta. She's also into kickboxing and running. But for the past couple of months, Punni has ventured into the world of Miss World Canada, and it's certainly not all fun and games.
"It's not like basketball or anything like that, because that's a team sport," she said, "but I'm using all the skills I've learned all those years."
There is a sense of teamwork in the pageant, which raises money for Variety - The Children's Charity and sees some contestants do so by co-hosting fundraising events at local bars and restaurants.

Thirty-three young women are in the game, so to speak, for a week of events that conclude with what promises to be a glitzy pageant Friday night (May 7) at Surrey's Chandos Pattison Auditorium.
Last November, Punni was bored one night when an internet search hit upon the Variety website. A few more clicks of her mouse and she found a link to the Miss World Canada pageant, something totally foreign to her.
"I've never trained for this," Punni told the Now. "It's not like what people think, that it's all girls who've been doing pageants since age nine. People tend to think it's a beauty pageant, but it's all about how a woman presents herself."
Yes, there is a swimsuit contest -- but it's optional, as is the talent contest. As of Friday, Punni wasn't so sure about donning a swimsuit for judges' eyes only, but was confident enough in her dancing abilities to get it done for the pageant talent show, held today (Tuesday) in Vancouver.
Articulate and good-natured, Punni, 23, seems like an ideal contestant for Miss World Canada, which sees 10 per cent of each woman's score based on her fundraising efforts for Variety. The charitable effort underlines the "beauty with a purpose" ideology spread by Julia Morley, U.K.-based president of the Miss World organization.
Contestants also score points by generating publicity for the pageant, which explains the press releases sent to local media outlets by Punni and others, including Britney Darmanin.
On Sunday evening, Darmanin, 22, hosted an "Eat, Drink & Give" fundraiser for Variety at Ocean Park Village Pub. It was the second such fundraiser she staged, following a bachelor/bachelorette auction event in Toronto, where she is studying radio and television arts. The total take from the two events is about $3,800, she said.
"It's probably going to sound cheesy to say," said Darmanin, a two-time Miss White Rock title holder, "but the events I've planned and people I've met along the way, the contacts I've made, it's been really worthwhile.... At this point, I'm almost at the 'whatever happens, happens' stage (with the pageant results). It's been really enjoyable."
Miss World Canada contestants include Surreyites Punni, Nicole Raj and Ritika Bhachu, along with Surrey-raised Darmanin and Sarah Davidson-Gurney of White Rock.
Friday's event in Surrey will also see 14 contestants vie for the Miss Teen Global crown in a pageant held simultaneously. Nineteen of the 47 hopefuls involved in both pageants hail from the Lower Mainland.
Contestants between age 17 and 25 vie for the Miss World Canada crown. The winner will travel abroad and represent Canada in the Miss World pageant in Vietnam this November. The title holder "will become a celebrity spokesperson, raise money for children's charities and will receive preparation in wardrobe, media and interview training to compete at Miss World 2010," organizers say.

PAGEANT WINNER

Posted By HAROLD CARMICHAEL THE SUDBURY STAR

A Greater Sudbury teen is headed to the Miss World Canada Pageant after capturing the Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant 2010 held at Laurentian University Saturday.

"I heard her (Shelby Gobbo) name called as 1st Runner Up," recalled Keatha Walsh, 18, in an interview Sunday.

"I thought, 'Does that mean I won?' I was sort of shocked at first. I didn't know how to react at first. I was ecstatic to be there. I didn't know whether I should cry or be laughing. It was just a surge of emotions. But, it was a good feeling to know that I had accomplished that for myself, especially when you put so much work into it. It teaches you a good lesson: you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it."
Walsh, who went into the event as Miss Sudbury District, beat 32 other contestants to win the honour and advance to the Miss World Canada Pageant in Vancouver next May. Walsh would be going even if she had not won, as she was one of seven contestants selected by a Miss World Canada representative at the event to compete in the national pageant.

The Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant featured women from across northeastern and northwestern Ontario including the communities of Thunder Bay, Timmins, West Nipissing, Terrace Bay and Val Caron.

The pageant's second runner-up was Miss Thunder Bay Tegin-Lee Popowich. Finishing third and fourth were Miss Kapuskasing Jacqueline Skiffington and Miss Verner Jessica Brazeau.

Walsh is no stranger to the North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant. Last year, she finished fourth. The winner of the Miss Teen Sudbury title in 2006, Walsh said the strong finish at last year's pageant convinced her she should try again in 2010 and come a little better prepared.

"For me, it took a year to polish up a few things I knew I had to," she explained. "It was a good experience. I won the Public Speaking award last year, but I worked on learning more about Canada and Northern Ontario. I won the Scholastic Award as a result."

As Miss North Ontario Regional Canada, Walsh will now get to represent the pageant at public events over the next year, and the pageants sponsored charity -- Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer. She said she can't wait for those opportunities.

"I think it's very important to be a role model," said the Lo- Ellen Park Secondary School graduate who just finished her first year of bio-chemistry at Laurentian University. "It is one of the big jobs of winning the sash and crown, showing pride how you got there, being involved in the community. It is one of the reasons I was selected. I'm very involved in my community and being able to influence people. Being a pageant winner gives you more opportunities to speak."

To get to the final five, Walsh had to do well enough in a fashion show, formal wear, and opening number to be among the final 15 contestants. The 15 were then reduced to 10 and then to five. The final five each had to answer an impromptu question.

Angel Bhathal is heading off to conquer the world, and compete in the “Miss World Canada Pageant." People can vote online Angel at www.missworldcanada.org. (HANDOUT)

Angel Bhathal is not only a friendly and beautiful Manitoban but she’s also heading off to conquer the world, and we can help her!

She is about to compete in the “Miss World Canada Pageant,” which she described to me as follows: “Dear Laurie. This is not your typical ‘beauty pageant,’ as it is also a fundraiser for Variety — The Children’s Charity, and includes a contestants’ fundraising category in the judging criteria.

“I find this aspect particularly appealing because it enables young women to feel empowered based on what they do for their community, as opposed to simply focusing on appearance. The pageant’s theme is ‘Beauty with a Purpose.’ ”

Works for me, and it appears to me, folks, that Angel, the only Manitoba contestant, is more than worthy of our support.

Despite being a busy pharmacy student who is doing a 40-hour/week practicum, juggling exams, participating in a band and being a primary caregiver for her grandma, she has also managed to take part in the pageant, organize a major fundraiser, while driving community awareness of what Variety and the Miss Canada World Pageant stands for.

Other community involvement includes supporting charities including Osborne House Women’s Shelter, the MAC AIDS fund, Children’s Miracle Foundation, and many more.

Not just another pretty face, Manitoba’s future Miss World Canada has substance.

So how can we help her?

Well first, there is a “people’s choice” segment of the competition, where we can vote online for our favourite competitor, and that would be Angel, of course, at www.missworldcanada.org.

Couple of other areas where she could use our support: First, she is still accepting silent auction donations to take with her to next week’s Pageant in B.C., as the event includes a silent auction to raise funds for Variety; and she is also accepting pledges in support of her pageant fundraising efforts for Variety at www.angel4mwc.blogspot.com. Deadline for all of the above is May 2.

Please give her all the support you can, keeping in mind that whatever the reason, giving to Variety, The Children’s Charity, is always an excellent investment.

Best of luck, Angel. Do us proud.

A popular annual spring event, the Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant, is set to take place in Sudbury this week.

Supporters and the public are invited to come out to see 33 pageant delegates compete for the honour of representing Northern Ontario.

The pageant has been a part of spring rites for young ladies from 16 to 24 for more than 35 years. The event is an official preliminary to Miss World Canada, Miss Teen Canada World And Top Teen Of Canada.

he Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant is also an official supporter of Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer.
Kristen Ethier, 20, a third-year biomedical-biology student at Laurentian University, will represent Naughton. Ethier plans to apply to the Northern Ontario Medical School this fall.

"Ever since I've been in high school, I've always been interested in science," she says. "As I got older, I knew I wanted to go into the medical field. That's what our program is tailored to."

Ethier says she's looking forward to the pageant. "I was invited by the president," she says. "A friend actually knew about this. She had done pageants before. She told me it would be a really great experience ...

"I think for any girl it's probably a lot of fun to get dressed up. I've never been in anything like this before. I thought, 'hey, why not?'"

The talent portion of the pageant takes place Friday. Ethier, who has had some vocal training, plans to sing Strawberry wine.

Contestant speeches, meanwhile, will not take place in front of an audience, but rather the judges.

"We have to choose an important topic that resonates with us. For me, that's drinking and driving. Not because I've had anyone close to me a victim of it, it's something I'm very strongly against. I wish more people would take it seriously."

Cheryl Kozera, the owner and organizer of the Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant, says the event is a great way to promote not only the individual, but the North as well.

"This event focuses on the importance of promoting tourism in the North and the discovery of the rewards of volunteer work for worthwhile charities," Kozera said. "The most important focus is self-development of personal character, confidence, stage presence and personal interaction with others.

"The candidates also must focus on a supporting an agency or charity for the betterment of the community or area they serve. Our host chari

ty is the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer. We focus on their work helping provide support, advocacy and education."

Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer is an independent registered charity. Incorporated in December 1998, it is a recognized provider of services that helps Northern families cope with the experience of childhood cancer.

For past president Lorraine Chartier, the long and difficult journey of childhood cancer began in 1991 when her youngest daughter, Barbie, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma.

Life took a sharp turn at the Chartier home, with Lorraine attending to Barbie's medical needs, while dad's role was divided between pursuing his education, working, maintaining the well-being of the entire family and numerous trips to Toronto. As the same time, their daughter, Michelle, stayed home and took cared for her two brothers.

During that period, most of Lorraine's and Barbie's time was spent in Toronto either at the Ronald Macdonald House, or in the hospital during Barbie's numerous surgeries and ongoing chemotherapy treatment.

After Barbie lost her battle to cancer in 1996, Lorraine worked to bring back the Rainbow CanCare support group in Sudbury.

With the help of oldest daughter Michelle and other bereaved parents, they founded the Northern Ontario Families of Children in the fall of 1998.

In 2000, Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer began fundraising to provide financial assistance to families, as well as emotional support and expanded their support from the Sudbury region to assisting families throughout Northern Ontario.

Edmonton’s Ziyah Karmali will compete for the title of Miss World Canada next week in Vancouver.

YONATHAN SUMAMO
FOR METRO EDMONTON
April 27, 2010 5:25 a.m.

With the Miss World Canada pageant only a week away, a local contestant is balancing both preparation and a charity dinner.

Ziyah Karmali, Miss Edmonton, is hosting a banquet tonight at Haweli Restaurant on 10220 – 103 St. to support the Variety Children’s Charity.

The charity helps young children with disabilities learn and participate in community activities.

Karmali said helping others is important to her, but children are especially close to her heart.

“I’m a teacher by day, so I really believe that education for all children is important,” Karmali said.

Some local figures are expected to come out and support the dinner, including Mayor Stephen Mandel, former Oiler Georges Laraque and Eskimos past-and-present Shannon Garret, J.R. LaRose and Patrick Kabongo.

But how does Karmali organize a major fundraiser, teach and prepare for the biggest pageant in Canada?

“All-nighters,” she said, laughing. “But really I try to organize myself. I teach during the day, so I wake up early to start my day and continue after work. It’s very stressful but I hope it will pay off in the end.”

The Miss World Canada pageant takes place May 3-7 in Vancouver. If Karmali wins the title, she will represent Canada at the Miss World 2010 pageant in Vietnam this fall.

Ottawa resident Crystal Grierson is competing in the Miss World Canada pageant in Vancouver next month.

RACEY TONG
METRO OTTAWA
April 22, 2010 5:55 a.m.

Crystal Grierson is one of those girls you’d love to hate.

After qualifying last month, the 22-year-old Ottawa resident is headed to the Miss World Canada competition in Vancouver on May 7. She’s ambitious, to boot — a recent graduate from Carleton University, she hopes to pursue a master’s degree and a PhD.

But when you hear about Grierson’s real passion, you can’t help but root for her.

She started volunteering in her early teens and now volunteers with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa. “Any chance I get to volunteer, I’ll pounce on,” she said.

Volunteering, in fact, was what got her interested in entering the Miss World Canada competition. “I was researching this pageant on the Internet and noticed that they focused on children’s charities,” she said. “That sparked an interest."

Grierson will be one of 30 women from across Canada vying for the crown.

A West Vancouver woman is hoping to wear the title of Miss World Canada when the pageant comes to town next week.
Sherry Shahrzad Jobani, 19, will join 32 other contestants May 7 on stage at the Chandos Pattison Theatre in Surrey for the official preliminary to the international competition.
Contestants will be judged on their initiatives to promote the pageant and fundraise for its chosen charity, Variety the Children's Charity. They'll also receive points for competing in three optional categories: talent, bathing suit and international costume. Forty per cent of the score will come from a series of pre-competition interviews with judges. Final marks will be awarded for a walk onstage in evening wear.
Jobani, who attended Chartwell and Sentinel schools and is in her second year of sciences at UBC, says she entered the competition because she likes fundraising and loves the idea of helping others. "Having that title will really give me a platform for my voice to be heard," she said.
The pageant's winner will represent Canada in the Miss World finals in Vietnam next November.
Jobani will host a final fundraiser this evening, April 30, at Mona's Lebanese Cuisine, 1328 Hornby St. in Vancouver. Admission, $40, includes a three-course meal and live entertainment. Ten dollars from each meal will be donated to Variety.

Subject: Another Indo-Canadian Vying For Miss Canada World Title

VANCOUVER – There will be numerous Indo-Canadian contestants at the Miss Canada World pageant taking place in Surrey on May 7.

Dona Sharma , a 4th year student in the joint UBC/BCIT Honours, Co-op Biotechnology
program, is among three Indo-Canadian women to be selected as a delegate for the Miss World Canada pageant, 2010 which is going to be held in Vancouver for the first time ever.

Poonam Puni and Sapna Sehrawat, whom the LINK profiled last week, are the other two who will be taking part.

The Miss World Canada pageant is a national event in which 33 representatives from all over Canada will be competing for the title of Miss World Canada this year. This pageant is the official preliminary to the international Miss World pageant which will be held in Vietnam in November, 2010.

The Miss World Canada pageant is quite different from typical pageants due to the emphasis on raising funds for Variety: The Children's Charity and helping the community. This pageant show cases talent and community service and is a fundraiser for Variety-The Children’s Charity of BC which is a non-profit organization with the mission to raise funds and distribute grants throughout BC to inspire hope, enrich lives and build a better future for children who have special needs.

Since 1965, Variety-The Children’s Charity of BC has raised over $150 million. Each year Variety receives over 1200 requests for financial assistance for medical emergencies, therapies, specialized equipments, drug prescriptions and out of town accommodation, meal and travel costs.

Julia Morley who is the President of the Miss World Organization and Variety International, coined the phrase 'Beauty With A Purpose' more than 25 years ago and since then more than $400 million USD have been raised in its name in support of children's charities across the globe.

Dona was born in a multicultural community in India. After her family immigrated to Canada, she began her post-secondary education in Kelowna and then moved to Vancouver for further studies. Due to her deep interests in medicine, community service and working with kids, she plans to attend medical school and become a paediatrician.

During high school, Dona represented India as a Rotary exchange student in Washington State and also represented Washington State at the National Youth Science camp in USA.

Dona also won 2nd place at the Intel International Science & Engineering fair and received the honour of having an asteroid named after her through the CERES program at the MIT Lincoln laboratory. She also received awards from the American Association of University Women, United States Department of Agriculture, Institute of Food Technology and the Society of Women Engineers for excellence in Science. Dona was also awarded the “Gujarat Gaurav” or “Pride of Gujarat” award by the Gujarat government for her scientific achievements at an international level.

Dona has also served as the president of the Indian Students’ Association at UBC and currently volunteers as a client service volunteer at the Canadian Red Cross Medical Equipment Loan Depot, a gift shop volunteer, a volunteer for the extended care Sunday services and a volunteer for the physiotherapy program at the UBC hospital.

Apart from volunteering, Dona also enjoys dancing. She has been very active in our local Indian community and has performed traditional Indian and Bollywood dances at different local events including the India Day celebration in Surrey, the annual Cultural show by the Gujarati Society of BC and many other events on the UBC campus and in the Vancouver area.

Dona has been motivated to participate in the Miss World Canada pageant because she believes that this is pageant is “one of a kind” and will be a unique learning experience that will allow her to play a major role in fundraising for humanitarian causes, and helping children and people around the world.

As a contestant and a BC representative, Dona is working on raising funds for Variety: The Children’s charity of BC. Dona’s fund raising efforts count for 10% of her overall score of the competition. You can help her by buying gold heart pins from Variety and by buying tickets for the pageant show. The gold heart pins from Variety can be sold for a minimum donation of $3 and is a great way to contribute towards the future of children with special needs.

The pageant finale will be held at the Chandos Pattison Theatre in Surrey on May 7th, Friday at 7 pm. Tickets are $25 and a portion of the net ticket proceeds will be donated to Variety.

If you would like to make a donation to Variety or buy tickets for the pageant show, please contact Dona at donasharma@hotmail.com

Ashley Callingbull is competing against 62 other young women from across Canada for the title of Miss Universe Canada 2010.

Updated: Sun Apr. 25 2010 14:10:24

Sonia Sunger, ctvedmonton.ca

Ashley Callingbull had a rough upbringing; she grew up poor and was abused as a child, but the 21-year-old is using her troubled past as a source of strength to compete for the Miss Universe Canada 2010 title.

Callingbull is one of 63 women across the country vying for the coveted crown, and the only competitor of Cree descent.

While her beauty casts her in the same category as the other contenders, her upbringing sets her apart. Callingbull says, growing up on the Enoch Cree Nation and Hobbema reserves, she's had to overcome tremendous hardship.

"Bad things happened to us, you know me and my mom [were] like sexually abused and physically abused," said Callingbull.

Painful memories from her past are still be vivid in her mind, but Callingbull says she's able to put it behind her by focusing on her performing career. She is currently studying drama at Concordia University College in Edmonton.

"Being on stage, people looking at me…makes me feel really good just because the feelings I had when I was a child, it wasn't great," said Callingbull.

To assist her in her goals, Callingbull is getting free help from celebrity trainer Andrea Orbeck. The former Morinville resident now boasts several supermodel clients in the US and wanted to teach Callingbull how to use her rough past as a source of inspiration.

"You get a lot of tenacity, to have to endure some of the areas of your life where you're going to be told no and I think that commonality I also see in Ashley," said Orbeck.

In addition to free help, Orbeck also donated a number of dresses to Callingbull, one of which is worth $10,000.

Callingbull says while the title of Miss Universe Canada would be great, her ultimate goal is to work with under-privileged youth.

"I like seeing smiles on kids' faces because I never really had one," she said.

The young woman says no matter where her life path takes her, she hopes to provide inspiration for other young aboriginals.

"Society perceives that we're like drunks, we're dropouts, we're failures, but you know 90 per cent of the people are successful," said Callingbull.

Callingbull will compete in the preliminary round of Miss Universe Canada 2010 on June 12th. The top 20 will then go on to compete in the finals on June 14th.

A young Okanagan woman is hoping to wear a crown this summer.

Christina O'Connor, 18, is in the running for the title of Miss B.C. She has spent the last several months preparing for the contest, which takes place in Fort Langley this July.

“I thought it would be a neat experience, plus the whole thing is a fundraiser for Cops For Cancer, so I can help out a good cause at the same time,” says O'Connor.

She says this is her first pageant and she is still finding her way around the world of pageantry.

“It's an interesting process, all the interviews. You have to have four outfits for the pageant, a business one, a sports one, a ball gown of course and an outfit provided by your main sponsor.”

O'Connor, who is studying to be a pharmacy tech at Okanagan College, is still searching for sponsors.

“Every contestant has to have $801 in order to be eligible to compete. I'm not sure why they have that amount, but that's what I need to get.”

The winner of the Miss B.C. title will be eligible to compete in upcoming pageants such as Miss World and Miss Earth.

Miss Universe Canada Mariana Valente poses for a photo at Jeanne Lottie Boutique in Yorkville yesterday, preparing for tomorrow's charity bash at the Berkeley Church on Queen St. E. (ERNEST DOROSZUK/Sun Media)

Last time I saw Mariana Valente she wore a green bikini and four-inch heels.
Funny how you remember certain things, eh? The bikini was between lime and pea.
Ms Valente was waltzing across a stage at the John Bassett Theatre on her way to the Miss Universe Canada title last May. I was a judge.
We chose well, it turns out.
Our little miss is an angel of mercy for the kids of Brazil.
Which brings me, oddly enough, to a boutique on the eastern fringe of Yorkville.
Pink is very hot at Jeanne Lottie on Scollard St. The walls are pink, the pillows, the mousepads. Even the toilet paper is pink.
"Pink is the new red," someone tells me.
Many of the purses on display are pink.
Valente, 24, is here to choose one for the auction at her fundraiser tomorrow night. She helped the store with its breast cancer campaign, so a favour for a favour.
"What do you think?" she asks me, holding up a sizzling pink handbag.
She'd look good clutching a plastic bag. That figure is made for Copacabana. You could sink a rainforest in those big, brown eyes.

CALLING CARD
But I hate pink. She picks an orange one.
Tomorrow's gala is the reason Mariana Valente became a beauty queen. Miss Universe Canada is a good calling card if you run a charity.
Mariana's charity is the children of her native Brazil.
It started with her grandmother, who for years held a Christmas party for the poor in Caxambu, 300 km north of Rio. She died two years ago.
Mariana and her family kept the party going, long distance. They came to Canada in 1997.
And they set their sights higher -- rebuilding a ramshackle shelter for abused kids in Caxambu.
Headquarters for the charity, now called BASE, is the dinner table in Richmond Hill. There's Mariana, her dad Gustavo, an engineer at Bombardier, her schoolteacher mom, Ellen, sister Patricia, 26, and brother Luis Gustavo, 28.

SCHOOL NEXT
"Winning the pageant," says Mariana, "meant we could help on a much bigger scale.
"What a great way to honour my grandmother."
The shelter is nearly done. Mariana, whose beau is a construction worker, goes to Brazil next month to scout the next plan: A school to teach adults basic job skills.
Much more than a pretty face is our Mariana.
She's had an action-packed six months since I last saw her. She didn't make the final 15 at Miss Universe in the Bahamas. But her roomate was Miss Bolivia, so she got caught up in the pageant's big international incident.
A sort of Misses Crisis, it centred on the national-dress event.
Miss Peru wore a diablada (dance of the devils) costume. Vivid colours, with a horned hat.
Neighbouring Bolivia, which claims diablada as its own, went ballistic. The minister of culture threatened to go to the International Court of Justice. An "unlawful appropriation of Bolivian heritage," he called it. I kid you not.
Bull-ivia! said Peru. Diablada knows no borders.
And you thought beauty contestants were catty.
"The two girls got along just fine," says Mariana, "but it got political."
So much for the eternal theme of pageants: World peace.
No dispute over Miss Canada's costume -- a sexy amethyst-themed outfit, for one of our national gems.
At Jeanne Lottie she's dressed down, if that's possible. Jeans and a dark turquoise top.
Lovely. Where'd you get it?
"Guess."
Well, I haven't a clue, really.
"No, no, Guess."
Right. She's just in from her part-time job at a Richmond Hill daycare. She's taking a year off York University to deal with the demands of her title -- charity events include Sick Kids, AIDS and breast cancer. A TV gig, surprise, surprise, might be in her future.
For now, she scrambles to get ready for tomorrow's shindig at the Berkeley Church on Queen St. E. (To attend or donate, see baseforchildren.com.) Dinner, dance, auction, and Cirque du Soleil performers.
She'll wear a gold, silver and black cocktail dress.
Sorry. No green bikini.

Miss Universe Canada, Mariana Valente, is the second York student in four years to represent Canada at the Miss Universe pageant.

The carpeted room muffled the sound of Mariana Valente's three-inch heels as she rounded the corner and entered the room. In her heels, her five-foot-ten frame was taller than mine.

The statuesque Valente was dressed in fitted black casual pants with a sleeveless ruffled top. Her long, wavy brown hair rested on her shoulders, just past her oversized golden hoop earrings. She sat upright in the seat across from me, seemingly unaware of the lights and cameras clicking away as she spoke.
Casual isn't quite the same when you're Miss Universe Canada. Of course, Valente's life no longer quite resembles what it was a few months ago, before she won the title that made her Canada's newest ambassador.
The 23-year-old York student who lives in Richmond Hill had to put her French studies on hold this year in order to acquire the newest addition to her wardrobe – a diamond studded crown – and fulfill the responsibilities it entails. As she pointed out, competing in the Miss Universe competition is the pinnacle of her pageant career.
"Yes, I'm retired," she conceded with a smile. It's easy to hear a natural, but polite, sort of confidence in her voice. Despite her poise, Valente admitted that the images of the American contestants in both the 2007 and the 2008 Miss Universe pageants falling over onstage did nothing to calm her nerves. "[Onstage] you do block out all of the noises but at the same time, you can still hear your family screaming at the back," she said.
Though Valente failed to crack the top 15 in the Miss Universe competition, held on Aug. 23 in the Bahamas, it doesn't mean she didn't accomplish what she set out to do when she entered the beauty-obsessed world of pageants.
"I always had a purpose," she said, describing the charity she started in 2004 to help underprivileged children in the village of Caxambu, Brazil – the village in which her mother and grandmother grew up and the country in which she was born.
The Brazilian Association for Social and Educational Support (BASE) has been aided tremendously by the publicity that comes with the pageant circuit, and ever since Valente took home the Miss Latina Canada crown in 2007, the charity has continued to grow.
Born in São Paulo, Brazil, the striking Valente has split her time equally between her native country and her adopted country. She has a positive outlook on the Canadian experience and said she was proud to share her hybrid identity with other pageant contestants in the Bahamas.
"To see a Brazilian girl representing –" she paused to correct herself, "a Brazilian and Canadian girl representing Canada, they really got to see that Canada is very multicultural," she said.
Valente spent the three weeks prior to the competition preparing for the pageant, and, although the experience of being surrounded by 84 of the most beautiful women from around the world sounds overwhelming for the average person, Valente said the diversity of the group made her feel strangely comfortable with the other women. It's a reality she's familiar with; in fact, it's one she said she sees every day at York.
"I think that I am most proud of – because I can relate to it – the diversity here [at York] and how everyone is so welcoming," explained Valente.
York is no stranger to pageant winners. In 2006, York's Alice Panikian faced the challenge of competing on the Miss Universe stage fresh after Canadian Natalie Glebova claimed the Miss Universe title the previous year. Panikian didn't win, but she did make the finals.
In the annual Miss Universe pageant, owned in part by famous business tycoon Donald Trump, contestants are judged on three separate categories: bathing suit, evening gown and final interview. Valente said it's often difficult to know exactly what finer details the judges are looking for from pageant to pageant.
The bathing suit category is one Valente counts as one of her strengths, so it's not surprising that her workout regiment leading up to the Miss Universe competition was nothing short of fierce. Preparing for the physical aspect of the Miss Universe competition is a variable she can control. The final interview, though, is something Valente said should come more naturally.
She notes that some girls study and practise answering potential questions and answers, but she takes a different approach.
"I don't think you can prepare for the [final interview]," she said. "I don't like rehearsing. You don't sound natural."
If the challenge and the pressure prior to competition was an uphill climb, Valente faces a mountain of expectations in the coming months. "If we are going to grow [BASE], this is the year to do it," she said, adding that pageants are not treated the same in Canada as they are in other parts of the world, and that they are not as popular. This makes Valente's challenge of bringing publicity, not to mention donations and awareness, to her charity's cause all the more urgent. She wants to get the word out before the shine from her Miss
Universe Canada win begins to fade.
With all of the new commitments that come with her crown – speaking at elementary schools, doing interviews and building her charity – it's difficult for her to see her friends as often as she used to. But, she made it clear that her newly acquired title hasn't changed the relationship she has with her friends.
"I am the same person, I just accomplished something different. I miss being here, I miss being with my friends," she said, peering out of the window into the bustling Harry
W. Arthurs Common.
Valente said the Miss Universe Canada experience has made her rethink her career goals. Though she maintained that her goal of becoming an elementary school teacher may still be in the cards, having the chance to interview Miss Universe 2008, Venezuela's Dayana Mendoza, during a segment for eTalk Daily made her consider other career possibilities,
perhaps one in journalism.
"Maybe next time I can interview you," she joked. Just as she finished her final point, she got distracted by the vibrating cell phone sitting next to her.
She read the text message aloud: "School is not the same without you."
Next September, Valente can continue learning from the teachers she raves about, but, until then, Valente intends on continuing to make Canada proud.

- BASE will be holding a dinner and dance fundraiser on Oct. 23 at the Berkley Church in Toronto.

August 29, 2009 – 27 year old Montrealer, Yajaira Mercedes of the Dominican Republic won the title of Miss Latina Canada 2010 at the only national event in the country for the Hispanic community in Canada. This is the first time both Quebec and the Dominican Republic community has been honored with this national title.

“I just can’t believe it,” says Mercedes, who is fluent in French, Spanish and English. “I feel like all of my dreams have come true. I don’t believe that any of this is happening, I feel like I’m going to wake up because I’m in a dream! I am the first winner from Quebec, the first from the Dominican, and the first black woman to ever hold this title. I just can't beleive it!”

She is definitely not dreaming. Coming in first runner up at the Miss Latina Canada, Quebec regional competition, Yajaira placed as first runner, and was pleasantly surprised that her position awarded her the opportunity to represent “la belle province”, along with winner Judith Martinez. Out of 30 women from across Canada, Yajaira’s grace, poise, and articulation made her a favorite amongst the judges.

Born in San Victor, Dominican Republic Yajaira Mercedes is an esthetician and cosmetician that has been dreaming of breaking into the world of modeling and fashion. Mercedes is a Canadian citizen and permanent resident of Montreal.

With a busy year ahead of her, she will be in Miami, Florida in both October and December to participate in Miss Latina International Supermodel, as well as a special guest for the Parade of Costumes. Mercedes will also visit Hollywood, California to study Acting for Film at the New York Film Academy at Universal Studios. Among the many guest appearances across Canada that she will make, Yajaira will be a special guest at the Toronto Pride Parade, Caribana Festival, and both the Puerto Rican and Dominican Day Parade’s in New York city.

Winners become Canada's Latin-Canadian Good Will Ambassador and travel through the America's as an official representative of Canada's growing Latin American population. In 2008, Miss Latina Canada became the first reality television series to air in the country about pageants, and also the first time in over 22 years that a pageant was broadcast on national Canadian television in a prime time slot.

Hey there, pageant fans!

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the brand new 2010 promotional video for the Miss Teen Newfoundland & Labrador Pageant is now online on our website.

Visit www.nfpageants.net to check it out, and while there, be sure to take a look at our 'video archive' - watch footage and highlights from previous years of our event: one of the largest teen pageantry events in Canada!

Good luck as well to Siera Bearchell - Miss Teen Canada-World 2009 of Saskatchewan, as she represents our country at the Miss Teen World Pageant in Houston, Texas. Bring home the crown, love!

P.S. Does anyone else think that Natalie Glebova-Alice Panikian was a MUCH better one-two punch than Dayana Mendoza-Stefania Fernandes? I think us Canadians should have been the ones to lay claim to the Miss Universe repeat wins! Thoughts? :)
