You can see photos of the show. Faze Magazine is one of our media sponsors and they did a spot light on the pageant on their site. We were also featured in a full page ad prior to the pageant and we will also have a full editorial in there next issue. There are a Teen Mag.
Some great shots. Love Faze there are so nice! They held a party for the girls - it was great here is a video

Singer shiloh was there too, no comments on how awful I look - it was pooring down rain and the road was torn up so we could not stop in front of the venue. I had to make sure the girls looked great and did not get wet lol. I was soaked... hence the hair.

In the spirit of Mariana's new pics, I'd like to wish you all Happy Karen Baldwin Day!

On July 26, 1982, Karen Baldwin from London, Ontario was crowned Miss Universe in Lima, Peru.

I joke with a few pageant friends that it's time to light a candle in honour of this huge day. ;-)

(And I'm a few hours late for NF, Atlantic and Eastern time, with my apologies.)

Hi everyone,

I do not want to keep posting the many articles etc going out on all the girls and the pageant. But I wanted to let you know we have been featured in media, print and radio for the past 6 months across Canada. The standard articles about the girls. Some are posted on the website under media but also on the Facebook group. Some I have not found but the girls have sent me. There really has been a surplus of media attention. Recently, what I have seen is PEI has been outstanding she was on every radio station on tv and had a couple of articles, one of the Quebec girls was on the radio yesterday. Eastern Ont was on CTV, Alberta, we have had many girls on Shaw and City TV. BC as well. The girls have done an amazing job at promoting their platforms and raising money for FTC.
I am thrilled at the positive response (so far) we have had to the pageant.
Now, During pageant week we will be posting updates, uploading photos, and having prize give aways - Kind of like the be the first caller and you get.... If you want to stay up to date on where the girls are, what TV show they will appear at etc the join our fan page. It is listed under
Miss Teen Canada-World pageant.
That way you will get up to date info on whats happening.

Voting has started BTW - we have opted for the 1 vote per person or per email method. We wanted the person who really got all the most "people" to vote to be the winner.

As you may know, we have taken a interactive approach and had each girl create a blog - The link is on their profile.
They get blog assignments and have been documenting their experience as a title holder - they are also judged on it. Our social media director has been outstanding and creative in creating these assignments. One thing in Canada I feel is lacking is public awareness and appreciation for a pageant ( and title holder) The only way to break down that stereotype and show people a pageant can open doors, create leaders, and be a positive experience is showing them. Not just telling them. It is not just in the show we produce but instead the entire journey leading up to the event. That is where the lessons are learnt, the confidence is gained, and they prove to them self they can do what ever they put their mind too. They have already accomplished something, because they are standing on that stage.

The girls have done a great job, some have even got letters from their Mayor wishing them good luck etc. These kids, held festivals, ( meaning they got local talent to perform and had a big show in support of them) created a dance camp where they taught lessons and the money raised went to FTC, sold muffins, sold their own art work for FTC. The creativity to raise funds for the charity was amazing. They also attended events, parades, spoke at schools etc. You can see a lot of this stuff on their blogs.

I can tell you, that we have a FIERCE competition ahead of us, it really is any ones title to take.

Anyhow, we will not be posting anymore on this board as I do not want to annoy people with post after post etc. If you are interested in following our girls Journey to become Miss Teen Canada-World 2009 Join our fan page on facebook.
Hope to see you all at the show!

All the best

Canadian Singers Divine Brown and Gary Beals to perform

Toronto, ON: Michelle Weswaldi, Executive Director of Miss Teen Canada-World, today announced the line-up of talent and hosts for the show for Miss Teen Canada-World on July 25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, John Bassett Theatre at 8:00 p.m.

Paula Brancati, has been on three seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation, and can be currently seen as a recurring character on CBC Television’s popular series Being Erica. Paula’s passion for the arts also extends to music, in which she is classically trained in both voice and piano. She was recently nominated for two 2009 Dora Awards in the category of Outstanding Female in a Musical and Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role. Paula’s past television credits include a leading role on the CBC series The Blobheads, guest appearances on Life With Derek, Heartland, among others. In 2006, Paula was nominated for a Gemini Award for Best Performance in a Children’s Youth Program or Series for Dark Oracle (YTV).

Adamo Ruggiero is an experienced television host, having hosted/co-hosted such shows as the MTV Hills After Show, Video on Trail, Canada’s Next Top Model, the 22nd and 23rd annual Gemini Awards as well as hosted multiple stories on CTV’s E-Talk. Adamo most recently hosted the first season of YTV’s hit series The Next Star, where he led the national search for Canada ’s next, young singing sensation. In 2002, Adamo began working on the second season of Degrassi: The Next Generation as Marco Del Rossi. Throughout seven years on the show, his role as a gay teenager has garnered much attention. In an attempt to share his story with other struggling gay youth, he has lent his name to The Trevor Project where he shot an international PSA alongside Roseanne Barr, T.R. Knight, Kristin Davis, John Goodman and Neil Patrick Harris. In April 2008, Degrassi was nominated for its second GLAAD Media Award where Adamo was invited to present at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood alongside Ellen DeGeneres, Rufus Wainwright, Sharon Stone and Tom Ford. He is currently, a student at York University in Communications Studies and Film Theory

For years, musical powerhouse, Divine Brown has been quietly carving out her own history on the Canadian R&B and soul circuit. In 2005 she released her much anticipated debut album, “Old School Love” which cemented Divine’s reputation as one of the country’s strongest urban talents. In 2008, she released “The Love Chronicles” which spans everything from bop-shoo-bop to sassy surf’n’soul kiss-offs to sultry late-night neo-soul. She has won a Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.

Recording Artist Gary Beals is a Juno Award nominee and a five-time African Nova Scotian Music Award winner, Canadian Independent Music Award and East Coast Music Award winner, a Canadian Urban Music Award nominee, Canadian Radio Music Award nominee and a Planet Africa Rising Star recipient. His hit single “Summer Nights”, had steady rotation on radio stations across Canada , and the video to the single helped propel Gary ’s Top 10 Album. The album received a 2005 Juno nomination for R&B Soul Recording of the year and a 2004 Canadian Urban Music Award nomination for New Artist of the Year. Through Gary ’s success on Canadian Idol, he acquired a record deal with Plasma Records and Kindling Music, owned by judges Farley Flex and Jake Gold. His latest album, The Rebirth Of… was released on June 9, 2009.

The Miss Teen Canada-World (MTC-W) Competition is the only national search that conducts provincial competitions across the country to select 54 finalists for 2009. The staged show produced in each province is to showcase the girls’ talents and the overall winner becomes “Miss Teen” of their home province. The remaining finalists are awarded city titles and invited to travel to Toronto with nine other provincial winners to compete for the title of Miss Teen Canada-World on July 25, 2009.

MTC-W is the only competition that has the rights to send the winner to the International Miss Teen World Competition. Organizers have searched the country for the best of the best. These Canadian teenage finalists are those who will compete for the title of Miss Teen Canada-World to represent Canada . Miss Teen Canada-World 2009 will go on to represent the country and compete in Houston , Texas , for the coveted Miss Teen-World title in August 2009. This final Canadian competition will be held in downtown Toronto on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at 8:00 p.m. at the John Bassett Theatre at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Girls aged 13 - 19 from across Canada will compete for the coveted title and the largest prize package awarded in a Canadian teen competition. Over $25,000 in cash, prizes, and scholarships will be awarded to talented aspiring teens. During their time in Toronto from July 19 to 25, the semi finalists will be seeing all the local attractions and experiencing Toronto ’s hospitality with their Moms and families.

“We thought that since the winner will be volunteering in Kenya in 2010 on a Me to We trip, it should be a requirement for the MTC-W Competition for each national delegate to raise $400 within their communities towards Me to We’s charity partner Free The Children.” Says Weswaldi. The winner will be invited to participate as a volunteer on a Me to We trip. This experience is to gain first-hand interaction by visiting a Free The Children project overseas. Their commitment to youth is to engage them in global development and social issues education so that they take action to make a difference.

Miss Teen Canada-World provides the winner with the opportunity to be an ambassador for Canada with the mandate to empower youth to take a leadership role in their communities. The girls have already learned first-hand about becoming a positive role model, and contribute to projects in their community by raising funds for Free The Children. By July 6, the girls collectively had surpassed the goal of $20,000 and have today raised over $30,000 for Free The Children. The girls will also

be judged on academic achievement, presentation and self-confidence and community contributions, all of the qualities that enables a young woman to become a leader of tomorrow.

Marc Kielburger, Co-founder, Free The Children to accept $30,000 cheque from contestants of The Search for Miss Teen Canada-World on July 25, 2009

Girls surpass previous goal of $20,000 weeks before deadline

Toronto, ON: Michelle Weswaldi, Executive Director of Miss Teen Canada-World, today announced that on July 25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, John Bassett Theatre, Marc Kielburger , co-founder, Free The Children, will accept a cheque for $30,000 from 54 outstanding Canadian teen girls. Each girl surpassed the requirement of raising at least $400 in her community across Canada and by July 1, over $10,000 more had been raised than previously expected.

Their commitment to youth is to engage them in global development and social issues education so that they take action to make a difference.

Me to We supports Free The Children’s international development work overseas. Me to We Trips offer unforgettable volunteer adventure experiences for young people. Youth do incredible things, like build schools and assist on clean water projects.

Me to We Trips offer international volunteer and leadership experiences in the rural communities of Arizona , Kenya , Ecuador , China and India . Participants build leadership skills and cultivate new friendships as they discover an incredible new culture. They return with new perspectives and more energy than ever before to get their family and friends involved in raising awareness and funds for overseas development projects through Free The Children, their charity partner.

Free The Children’s domestic programs provide North American youth with the confidence and leadership skills they need to take action on social issues in their communities and overseas. Their motto for these programs is to “educate, engage and empower,” a three step process that helps young people develop into socially-conscious global citizens.

Miss Teen Canada-World provides the winner with the opportunity to be an ambassador for Canada with the mandate to empower youth to take a leadership role in their communities and to create world-changing actions through Free The Children. The girls have already learned first-hand about becoming a positive role model, and contribute to projects in their community. The call is out to find Canada’s best overall teens for the 2nd annual Top Teen of Canada competition! Teenagers from across the country will be chosen to represent their communities in a competition that will award $5,000 in cash scholarship prizes.

This August, the chosen delegates will travel to Vancouver, BC for one week, one will be chosen as the Top Teen of Canada.

The Top Teen program raised over $20,000 for their chosen charity, Cops For Cancer for the Canadian Cancer Society. Each chosen delegate will again do a fundraiser towards this cause in his/her hometown prior to attending the final event.

During the week, they will receive professional training in various genres to enhance their life skills including public speaking, speech presentation, interview skills, and attend workshops such as self-defense, stress management, and health & fitness. A judging panel will determine the winner based on a speech presentation, interview, and a personal talent showcase. Last year’s contestants received nation-wide media coverage and were viewed as role models for other youth.

“Teenagers can make an incredible difference in their community and have great potential for leadership.” says creator Darren Storsley, a high school teacher and winner of the 2004 Canadian Male Model Search. “This program will allow youth to exceed and for the overall winner, a year of public appearances representing Canadian youth.”

The Top Teen of Canada Competition is open to all teenagers aged 13-18. For more information, visit: http://www.topteenofcanada.com or email info@topteenofcanada.com

Former British Columbia beauty queen sues top agency, alleges sexual battery

By Anthony Mccartney, The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - A former British Columbia beauty queen has sued International Creative Management, claiming the firm and one of its top talent agents subjected her to unwanted sexual advances.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of Claire Robinson alleges ICM and agent Jack Gilardi exploited the former Miss British Columbia and that she was sent to auditions for roles that didn't exist or weren't available to her. She alleges that one of Gilardi's friends, John Rockwell, introduced her to the agent and in 2008 threatened and raped her.

The talent agency denies Robinson's allegations. A phone message left Tuesday for Rockwell, who isn't affiliated with ICM, wasn't returned.

"ICM denies any and all wrongdoing," said Michelle Suess, an agency spokeswoman. "Ms. Robinson's allegations are completely baseless and ICM will vigorously defend this action."

The class-action lawsuit also seeks to end a practice it calls "hip pocketing," in which an agent claims they will represent a person but never actually takes them as a client. The lawsuit claims the practice at ICM led to the sexual exploitation of Robinson and others who were sent on fake auditions.

Robinson's suit also claims that Gilardi inappropriately touched her while en route in an ICM limousine to a stuntmen awards show in 2007.

The lawsuit seeks millions in damages and a judge's order to end "hip pocketing" at ICM, which the suit claims has been going on for years.

While it is the practice of many media outlets not to publish the names of alleged sexual assault victims, Robinson's lawyer says his client has made a conscious decision to identify herself.

Lawyer Perry Wander told The Canadian Press in a telephone interview from Beverly Hills, Calif., that Robinson wants to help protect other women who may come to Hollywood.

Wander says Robinson currently lives in Vancouver, has "pretty much abandoned" her modelling career, and is set to enrol at university in the fall.

ICM represents some of the entertainment industry's biggest names, including Chris Rock and Beyonce Knowles. Gilardi, who was married to actress Annette Funicello, has represented actors such as James Caan, Charlton Heston and Burt Reynolds.

Attorneys for Robinson, 23, say they're hoping to find women who may have received similar treatment within the past four years. Robinson's suit claims her career was irreparably damaged by ICM and Rockwell's alleged actions and that she suffered a nervous breakdown as a result.

Besides fraud, negligent supervision and a sexual battery claim against Rockwell, the suit seeks civil damages against ICM under a legal procedure often reserved for the mob or gangs.

The suit wants to designate the talent agency under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act, also known as RICO. If a judge allows that claim, Robinson's attorneys, Wander and Mitch Kalcheim, say they intend to seek triple the amount of Robinson's actual damages. They're also seeking 10 per cent of ICM's gross earnings for one year as punitive damages if Robinson's lawsuit succeeds.

Subject: Who are you calling a bimbo?

By MIKE STROBEL - Toronto Sun

"Bimbos" are really taking it on their dimpled chins this week.
The latest blow comes from Britain, where else?
Yes, the land that gave us Spice Girls, Benny Hill and Samantha Fox, who insured her bosom for a quarter-million pounds and once remarked, "I've got 10 pairs of training shoes -- one for every day of the week."
Now, this headline is turning heads in London's Daily Telegraph: Intelligent Women Enjoy Sex More Than Bimbos, Research Shows.
It refers to a King's College study of 2,000 female twins, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
"These findings show that emotional intelligence is an advantage in many aspects of your life, including the bedroom," says Prof. Tim Spector.
In other words, bimbos are a bust, eh, professor?
Yes indeed, he says, the research shows they are more likely to suffer from female orgasmic disorder.
ORGASMIC DISORDER
Come again? Female orgasmic disorder. They can't ... You know. Up to 30% of women have it.
(Funny, I bet another study would show up to 30% of women have inept lovers?)
Anyway, Charles Adler wants to talk about it on AM640.
So, naturally, he calls me. Good choice, Charles. I am known as something of an expert in matters of the heart. In fact, around the newsroom they call me The Professor.
So, I speak with authority when I tell Mr. Adler's listeners it's not fair to pick on "bimbos".
In my experience, a woman who looks bimbo-esque is just as likely to have a working brain as a woman in beige smock and sensible shoes.
Since when are beauty and brains mutually exclusive?

A crowning example this week: The Miss Universe Canada pageant. It's here in the Big Smoke, and for the third year I'm a judge.
Already, the cynics among you are tittering, "Yeah, sure. Bimbo Of The Year."
Think again, you in those sensible shoes.
Here is but a sampling from the resumes of the 57 contestants.

Marketing director, University of Lethbridge, University of Montreal, trauma unit nurse, U of T law, Ottawa U law, dressage equestrian, three languages, McGill, Gamma Phi Beta, Concordia grad, Masters of Science in Nursing student, handbag designer, government chemist, U of Calgary, restaurant manager, neurosciences major, four languages, realtor, molecular biology major, International Study Centre at Herstmonceux Castle in England, public health nurse, astrophysics major, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, six languages ...

Celina Toenz, 18, of Bolton, is a frosh at Western and a black belt in karate. Call her a bimbo and she will break your nose.

Sameet Gill, 21, is in fourth-year chemistry at University of Alberta, speaks three languages and is on the dean's honour roll.

Tara Mobayen, 21, was a gold-medal mathematician back in Iran and now double-majors in biology and astrophysics at U of T.

One lovely miss reports a "photogenic memory" but I think that's just a slip. Or perhaps even her memory is good-looking.
Another says her horse has been the biggest influence in her life other than her parents. You snigger. But I think it's sweet.
Pretty girl loves her horse. Doesn't make her a bimbo.
And why do we assume a pillowy chest means a feathery head?
"It's not fair," says Robin H-C, my life coach. "There's always some basis for a stereotype, but you can't say it's true across the board. Absolutely not.
"We tend to separate beauty and brains and we don't generally anticipate finding both in the same package."
Well, 57 such packages are strutting about the John Bassett Theatre stage this week, chasing the Miss Universe Canada crown.

The finale goes tomorrow. Not Sunday as I doltishly reported in yesterday's column.

Omigod, I'm such a bimbo.

This year seems to be quite interesting in terms of competition. Lots of diversity, and not too many Eastern Europeans from Toronto. I think that there are tons of girls that stand out, but only one of them will win the title. Who??? Well, I've narrowed my choices to a top 10.

The Top 5:
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

My honest opinion, Celina is the perfect choice this year. She stands out in so many ways. Height, beauty, style, intelligence. Chanel is pretty and seeing how the prelims went, it wouldn't be a surprise if she make the top 5. I love Mariana. She's stunning. I would be very happy if Adwoa was chosen the winner, because she represents the diversity of Canada. Finally, Ylenia, who is also a stunning beauty, I can't see the top 5 without her in it.

The Top 10:
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Ksenia is absolutely gorgeous, but I'm not completely sold. Kaley is very "Top Model". I think TingJia could totally sneak into the 5, but for now she's in my 10. Something about Sandra intrigues me, and I think Brooke is very urban....

Overall, the girls were pretty strong this year. I can't wait to see who wins tonight! But I have to say that Celina is MY GIRL!!!!

Good Luck!

Toronto Sun
By MIKE STROBEL

http://www.torontosun.com/news/columnists/mike_strobel/2009/05/14/9451786-sun.html

Few things are as dangerous as the questions posed at beauty pageants.

You never know what horrors will emerge from between those lovely lips.

For instance, this from South Carolina's rep in the Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant:

Q: Recent polls have shown that a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

Miss South Carolina: "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, um, some people out there in our nation don't have maps ...
... and, uh ...
I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq and everywhere like such as ...
... and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future ...
... for us."

Yes, thank you Miss South Carolina. And, may I say, you look fabulous in a bikini.

This is of concern to me because I am again a judge in the Miss Universe Canada pageant.

And it's timely, because of what's happened to Miss California USA. This week, pageant owner Donald Trump ruled the controversial miss could keep her crown.
Her stage question got her in trouble.
"What do you think of marriage?" It was posed by blogger and gay rights advocate Perez Hilton.
Miss California replied she figured marriage ought to be between a man and a woman. This sparked a vicious crusade against the wee lass on Hilton's website -- who dug up racy photos of her, like the one on this page. There were calls to defrock her.
Trump countered: "It's the same answer the president of the United States gave. It's the same answer many people gave. She gave an honourable answer. She gave an answer from the heart."

Well, she won't do that again, eh?

The Miss Universe Canada pageant's finale is Sunday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. That night, finalists from among 57 lovelies will get a skill-testing question. Hopefully something punchier than how she would achieve world peace.
She will have to answer while 1,200-plus people in the John Bassett Theatre hold their breath. Including us judges.
This week we break the ice in one-on-one interviews with contestants. It's like speed-dating, without the big payoff.
Usually my brain gets overloaded with images of beautiful women answering my dumb questions.
You can't just ask, "What are you doing for dinner tonight?"
I will bring a stack of queries. Such as: Want to be a SUNshine Girl?
Is that mole real?
What's your sign? You're 20? Aren't you a bit old for this?
Did you know Donald Trump owns Miss Universe, too? Ever meet him? Wasn't Celebrity Apprentice a sham? Is he sleeping with Joan Rivers, or what?
If I pick you, will you take me to the Bahamas for the worlds?
In theory, her answers can determine her pageant fate. After all, we don't want Miss Universe Canada flubbing her moment on the Bahamian stage.

Not like this, from a Miss Filipina contestant in 2007:
Q: "What role does your family play for you in this pageant?"
A: "My family's role for me is so important because they was the one .... who's very ... (giggle) ... oh, I'm so sorry ... my family, my family ... OH, MY GOD! ... I'm SO sorry ... I told you that I'm so confident ... (giggle) ... sorry guys ... because this was my first pageant ever ..."
And she won.
Which goes to show you.

Indeed, the geographically challenged Miss South Carolina mocked above was third runner-up in Miss Teen USA.
We pageant judges are a kind and forgiving lot.
I wonder how I'd do up there, trying to be articulate when everyone's looking at my chest.

Q: So, Mikey, what do you want as your legacy?

A: Well, I, uh, it's ... and there I was in Ottawa having a coupla pints ... and, you know, the Maple Leafs ... uhhh ... (ugh, they drive me nutso) ... you ever been to Siberia? ... you know ... cold place, beautiful women ... you feeling okay? ... you've gone pale ... um ... now, where was I? ... oh, yes, world peace.

Beauty pageants may be passé but the shows go on
By Zachary Goelman, The Ottawa Citizen May 11, 2009 7:36 AM

Sarah Palin sashayed across the stage in a red one-piece and heels, contestant number eight in the 1984 Miss Alaska pageant.
Footage of that swimsuit competition exploded on YouTube during the last U.S. election campaign. The winners? Tina Fey and viewers of Saturday Night Live. Already the vice-presidential candidate was being mocked by some for being a bumbling airhead with little understanding of politics or the economy. The vintage video and its profile of her posterior seemed to encapsulate her character flaws. Fey's impersonations made them worse.
The resulting media heyday was enough to make pageant organizers and participants squirm.
"It's completely unfair and awful," Tara Hall -- Miss Canada International 2002 -- says of the stigma. Hall says she hates to be judged by her former title. And yet, as Palin discovered, it's just so easy to judge.
And while beauty crowns have been kicked around of late, this week in Toronto one will be awarded to Miss Universe Canada. That lucky winner will go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant later this summer.
With the glory up for grabs, it's as good a time as any to consider what all of this means in this day and age.
When the Miss Canada pageant last aired on TV in 1991, many assumed it had had its day. Just a few years later in the satiric film Canadian Bacon, director Michael Moore suggested its loss was a casus belli for the U.S. to invade its northern neighbour.
Almost 20 years later, the contests endure.
There's Miss Universe Canada, Miss World Canada, Miss Galaxy Canada, Miss Canada Globe, Miss Canada Earth, Miss Polonia Canada, Miss Latina Canada, Miss Black Canada and more. "There's always going to be young women who grow up, girls who grow up who aspire to be Miss Whatever," explains Jimmy Steele, a former Canadian pageant director and industry veteran. "Beauty pageants, even though they are passé in Canada, are still a part of our cultural ethos."
What's one more competition in this age of American Idol, America's Next Top Model and So You Think You Can Dance? "It is the era of contests -- of being voted 'off the island,' " said Terry O'Reilly, a media maven and host of CBC Radio's The Age of Persuasion. "Beauty pageants were really probably the only thing of that nature in the 1960s and 1970s."
Each year more than 100 women compete in Miss World Canada and Miss Universe Canada. Contestants pay an application fee, which can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars, which they are encouraged to raise from donors.
"Everything worthwhile costs something," observes Shannon Green, who doesn't regret the $850 she spent to enter the Miss Universe Canada pageant. (She made it to the Toronto-area finals.)
Ira Pettle serves as host of the Miss Canada International pageant. For one week each year, he coaches young women ("the misses") and teenagers to dance, strut, speak and sparkle.
To help explain why he's involved, he tells the story of an overweight 14-year-old named Ashley, "not a beauty queen by society's standards," but a contestant in the teen division.
Ashley joined a cadre of young women for a week of dance rehearsals -- "she wasn't a dancer, she was just sweating and working her butt off" -- photo shoots, day trips to Niagara Falls and, finally, an evening where the winner was chosen.
When they announced the final six, Ashley heard her name. "She got eliminated in the final three," Pettle recalls. "She was bawling tears of joy. She kept saying 'I did it, I did it.' " Pettle broke down, too. "It was the most inspiring moment of the pageant. I thought, 'Yes, this is why I do this.' "
There was a time when families would gather around the television to watch a young girl's dreams come true, says Steele. "That made for good television."
The rising status of women lead to the decline of the pageant. In 1975, a group of activists broke into the CTV studio and pelted the host of Miss Canada, Jim Perry, with packets of flour.
The event also got squeezed by the recession as advertisers tightened their belts until they finally pulled the plug. "It was a very sad day for the couple thousand people who were still actually watching the show, and for a couple hundred girls who still wanted to try," Steele recalled.
In it's place, smaller pageants appeared, though none could claim to be the true Miss Canada pageant -- a registered trademark.
These days beauty contests -- a sort of dog-and-pony show -- are an anachronism; at worst misogynistic. Pageant organizers reject this, of course. "We're not about beauty queens in bathing suits," Sylvia Stark, director of Miss Canada International, recently told guests at a dinner promoting her event. While beautiful women still parade on stage in evening gowns and cocktail dresses, they do so in a competition for academic scholarships.
The Miss Canada International pageant has reinvented itself as an organization dedicated to public service and ambassadorship (winners are expected to spend a year supporting charitable causes). Miss World, meanwhile, serves up "beauty with a purpose;" Miss Universe advocates HIV awareness; Miss Earth is devoted to the environment.
Pageants invariably include a category in which candidates are judged on more than physical appearance.
Just as pageants are changing, so too are definitions of beauty. Beauty has been democratized, says Sharon Haver, a fashion industry veteran and the founder of focusonstyle.com. When we look at prior beauty queens, we see something foreign. "They're not natural," Haver says.
Beauty today comes in different combinations -- in part thanks to advertising. Looks were once something had by a lucky few (and you, too, with the right products); now advertising assures us that beauty is inherent in us all. The pageants take this into consideration.
"It can't simply be about the outward manifestation of beauty," says O'Reilly. "That's just candy floss unless you have something else in this day and age."
Pageants, he says, are shallow. "You're really being rewarded for your genetic structure, which you have really very little to do with." Hence the nod to inner beauty.
Gwen Elliot, 20, is a contestant for the crown of Miss World Canada 2009. "You might be 200 pounds. But you know that if you want to do this, you have to work hard to get to that point where you look like one of these girls," she says. "I really want to show them that they can be really smart and look really good in a bathing suit -- at the same time."
Seventeen-year-old Lacey Tippett will also compete in the Miss World Canada pageant. She insists anyone can win because it's about inner beauty -- "your confidence, your integrity and your morality."
And what of outer beauty? "Well, everyone's beautiful," she responds.
Whether or not Tippett, Elliot and others truly believe this, it's clear they want to win. They view pageants as tickets to success.
Ksenia Mezenina, who competes in this weekend's Miss Universe Canada, says the contest falls in step with her ambitions. The sapling-slim model, born in the Siberian city of Yekaterinberg, is enrolled in York University's international studies program. She hopes recognition on the world stage will launch her career as a Canadian ambassador.
Rival contestant Ravi Bansal, 24, came across the Miss Universe pageant while working to raise funds for school construction in Punjab, India. She called director Denis Davila and asked if she could make her initiative a priority were she to take the crown. Had he said no, she would have declined to participate. "I'm not going to waste my time or anyone else's."
She came up with a business plan to raise the almost $7,500 needed for travel, wardrobe and registration. In preparation, she met twice a week with a coach to learn how to walk properly in eveningwear -- more challenging than you think.
Bansal considers her beauty a natural, accidental asset. "Hey, if this is what people find pretty, so be it" she said with a shrug, "If I refuse it, I'm not using something I have,
Nicole Dundson was the last woman awarded Miss Canada before the title vanished.
"Pageants do attract the stereotypical pageant participant: egotistical, materialistic, slightly air-headed and ill-informed, lovely looking young woman who just wants the attention," she says. "But those ones never win. The other type of person a pageant attracts is probably pretty much like me. Out for an experience, a fan of the stage, excited to face a personal challenge, and interested in giving back to the world around her in some way, shape or form."

Chanel Beckenlehner, left (photo by Nathan Buress of NPB Photography), and Celina Toenz, right, are competing in the 'Miss Beauties of Canada' competition and are asking for your votes.

Chanel Beckenlehner
Created in 2002, the 'Beauties of Canada' Organization has the exclusive rights to send a Canadian representative to the Miss Universe Pageant each year. Chanel Beckenlehner is currently running for the title of Miss Universe Canada 2009.
"Miss Universe Canada is the ultimate dream job," said the 20-year-old Caledon resident. "This is a unique opportunity to go beyond expectations, to embrace challenges and to use initiative for the betterment of others. Here lies the chance to be a positive role model, to set an example and to be a proud ambassador of the Canadian spirit."
Having such a platform to work from provides the opportunity for reaching out, being approachable and speaking on behalf of many issues and working alongside various charities such as the American Nicaraguan Foundation and SOS Children's Villages, said Beckenlehner, who spends her summers working at Glen Eagle Golf Course.
"It is also the chance to uphold and set an example of the professionalism and responsible role modeling nature of Canadian Pageantry in society and abroad," said the University of Toronto pre-law student. "I would like to take this time to thank the national pageant director Denis Davila and his team for inspiring young women each year to outreach, inspire, motivate change and become leaders in their communities."
For more information about Chanel Beckenlehner visit, www.chanelbeckenlehner.com.

Celina Toenz
Celina Toenz, 18, of Bolton, was crowned first runner up and Miss Photogenic in the Miss Canada Globe this past August. Now, she has her sights on Miss Universe Canada 2009 and then the Miss Universe title in the summer.
Toenz, who is completing her first year in Media Information and Technoculture at the University of Western Ontario has hopes of becoming a television broadcaster.
Toenz would love to follow her dreams of being in television and broadcasting and acting. She attended Mayfield Secondary School where she excelled in the drama program. Being six feet tall has proven to be a real asset in her quest to be Miss Universe Canada.
With her friends and family supporting her, Toenz said she feels she can strive for anything.
"When on stage it's a rush of adrenaline to see and hear the fans and supporters who believe in you," said Toenz. "And I feel as if I can use my stage presence as a platform not only for my future career, but also for the charities that I support."
While still in high school, equal rights for women and children around the world were on the young woman's mind. Doing research for drama monologues led her to the writings of Canadian journalist, Victor Malarek: "The Natashas" and "The Johns." Inspiration from fellow Canadians inspire her to do what she can. SOS Childrens Villages and Mike Holmes are also part of Toenz's charity platform.
"What a feeling that is, because I know that I can do this. It is a wonderful journey and I am loving every bit of it. Just think of what I can do for Canada and the world."

Tea-Nercita Savic is hoping she has universal appeal.
The 21-year-old Belleville resident was last year's third runner-up in the 2008 Miss World Canada contest. She's now in the Miss Universe Canada pageant.
"This is the big one," she said Tuesday. "I'm really excited.
"I think my chances are really good this year."
The preliminary round will be held May 15 at Toronto's Metro Convention Centre, when the field of more than 60 contestants will be cut to just 15.
The final group will compete May 16, with the winner advancing to the international Miss Universe competition Aug. 30 in the Bahamas. Contestants from more than 80 countries are expected.
Savic works as a receptionist at a medical clinic and will attend Utah's Brigham Young University this fall to study humanities and psychology.
The Centennial Secondary School graduate has also volunteered with SOS Children's Villages, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, UNICEF Canada and more.
And she isn't the only pageant competitor in the family. Sister Jelena, 19, was named the 2007 Miss Canada Teen Global by children's charity Variety.
Now the sisters are working together on Tea's shot at the title.
"Tea's going to kill it," Jelena said, adding that as her sister's informal consultant she's being paid in "shoes and purses."
"That's the best part -- going shopping," Tea said. "You almost feel like you're getting married.
"Without the boys," added Jelena with a laugh.
Tea said last year's Miss World experience has helped prepare her for her latest attempt.
"It gave me such an inside view of how it works behind the scenes," she said. "I understand what it takes to win.
"It puts you through the grind. It shows you what you're really made of in the end."
"We've had a lot of support from our parents," she added. "Our whole family in Europe has been cheering."
The Savics are a musical family: Tea, Jelena, and sister Tabitha, 11, will perform this month as part of a group of 10 harpists. Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to be in the audience.
Tea said she'll play the instrument in the Miss Universe competition in the hope of making it into the talent round.
"The more surprises you can give them the better your chances are."
Miss Universe winners become spokeswomen for HIVAIDS awareness.
Both Tea and Jelena are already working toward careers as motivational speakers, especially for children. Competing in pageants helps prepare them for that role, Tea said.
She said young audiences "want to see somebody who's reaching their goals, living their dreams, helping others along the way to great heights."
Tea said the high traffic on the contest website has already brought attention from strangers -- one European fan wrote to request an autographed photo.
But in the meantime, she said, she's not anxious about competing.
"I have so many reasons to be nervous but I'm not. I'm so full of confidence that I have no fear."
"I see even losing as a win. How many people can say they made it to the top 60?"
The public can read contestant bios and vote for them online at www.beautiesofcanada.com
Savic is also seeking sponsors for her campaign.

I would like to say that i have had the pleasure to meet all the contestants for the 2009 Miss Universe Canada round. And rarely do pictures reflect the true image of each and every one of them. Some pictures don’t serve justice while others give voters illusions! No doubt some girls are more photogenic than others, and therefore can mislead you..
Most of the girls are actually very pretty in person where the photo on the website does not reflect at all what they look like :(( sad but true.
My personal preference is Madalina Bejgu!! And there are some others that still are in the tops. But i have seen Madalina in person and she is a beautiful girl and with an amazing personality.

METRO EDMONTON
April 24, 2009 5:26 a.m.

Sameet Gill, 21, will compete for the Miss Universe Canada title in Toronto May 16.

Three journeys are beginning for three young Edmonton women who are trying to become Miss Universe.
Orlandice Balanag, 21, Sameet Gill, 21, and Paula Bailey, 25, said they are getting nervous, but they're excited as they continue to prepare for the Miss Universe Canada finals in Toronto May 16.
The three are hoping to be selected out of 64 competitors from across the country to take part in the international competition in the Bahamas later this year.
"I am very nervous," said Balanag, an architecture student from NAIT who is trying out for the pageant for the first time. "But since I started this I feel like I have more confidence."
Balanag said she would like to speak out on world issues and against bullying if she is chosen as Miss Universe Canada.
Bailey, a public-health nurse who moved from Fort McMurray seven years ago, said she thought twice about her first time trying out for a beauty pageant.
"But this is a chance for me to reach out to people for the work that I do," said Bailey.
Gill, who is the vice-president of a non-profit group at the University of Alberta called Circle K International, has never modelled before, but said she has watched pageants since she was a little girl.
"Having watched pageants since I was five years old, I just want to know what pageantry is like now," said Gill, who wants to fight hunger, disease and poverty if she’s picked as Miss Universe Canada.

MISS WORLD CANADA: Shy Queen's student to take on world after winning national title

Posted By JORDAN PRESS
http://www.thewhig.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1511627

Donning a white, zip-up hoodie, Lena Ma is unassuming as she walks through the John Deutsch University Centre. The only time she's noticed is when the lens of a photographer's camera is trained on her, forcing a group of young men to stop and look.

The fourth-year Queen's University music and life sciences student has been in front of the camera quite a bit lately after winning one of the country's largest beauty pageants.
"I'm getting used to it," the 21- year-old Ma said with a laugh. "I'm pretty shy."
In December, Ma will head to Johannesburg, South Africa, where she will represent Canada at the Miss World pageant. Two weeks ago, she won the Canadian competition. One day later, she was back in class.
Never in the history of the Miss World pageant has a Canadian won the competition, but Ma is already a trailblazer in one sense. This year, she became the first woman of Chinese origin to win the title of Miss World Canada.
Competing against women from 109 other countries, Ma smiles and says she knows her odds of winning the title are less than 1%.
"I can only do my best," she said.
Ma was born in China, lived for a time in Japan when she was four, and then came to Canada at age nine with her parents, both of whom have doctorate degrees.
She grew up in Toronto and learned English and French to go along with her first language, Mandarin, and Japanese.
When she was 17, her mother, Sherry Yin, decided to enter Ma into the Miss Chinese Toronto competition. Yin figured it would help her daughter shed her normally shy exterior.
Ma won the competition, the first time she had ever been in a pageant.
Ma said that being in the pageant helped her shed some of her shyness.
She didn't enter another competition for years until a friend entered the Miss World Canada pageant and later suggested Ma give it a shot.
Last year, Ma sent in an application for the competition and went through an interview process before landing a spot in the pageant.
"I had never competed in a western pageant before. I thought it would be different," she said.
That fact elicited some nerves when she was one of 45 girls selected for the pageant. In the end, she finished in the top five.
"I thought they would look for someone who looks more Canadian. I didn't think I would make it that far," she said.
This year, she went back and won.
"This year, it's such a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity (to go to Africa)," Ma said. "I really wanted that chance."
Ma said she believed part of her success was exuding more confidence on stage.
Her victory means she'll spend one month in South Africa -- all expenses paid -- receive a year's supply of Revlon hair care products and a personal trainer for the summer.
"I don't know how that's going to work out. I never go to the gym," Ma said with a laugh.
The Miss World competition, founded in 1951, is the oldest surviving international pageant. The telecast of the finals in South Africa is expected to attract viewers from more than 200 countries.
The pageant also expects its contestants to do fundraising. This year, Ma and her fellow Canadian contestants raised more than $25,000 for S. O. S. Children's Villages Canada, an international organization that helps orphaned and abandoned children in more than 130 countries.
That money was on top of the $5,000 Ma and her family helped raise for the charity in 2008.
If she wins the Miss World pageant, Ma said she'll be doing more charity work during the year, and finishing up her life sciences degree. When Ma makes public appearances, she trades in her white hoodie for her Miss World Canada sash and tiara.
The rest of the time, the sash and tiara stay in a drawer at her parents' home in Toronto.
Ma said that in the two weeks since winning the pageant, she really hasn't had a chance to let the win sink in. The soprano singer and honours student said she has been thinking about her graduation recital -- memorizing 13 songs for the one-hour concert -- and her five exams.

EarthTimes Press Release

Lena Yanbing Ma, a stunning 5'10.5" model/soprano student of Queen's University, won the title of Miss World Canada 2009, in a spectacular event at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in downtown Toronto on Saturday night.

Lena makes history as the first woman of Chinese Origin to win the Title of Miss World Canada. She is now the Canadian representative for the 2009 Miss World Competition, the largest beauty spectacular on the planet, which will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in December, 2009.

Miss World is the oldest surviving major international pageant. The telecast of the final competition is the world's largest live annual beauty pageant television event with global viewers in more than 200 countries. Aside from raising millions of pounds for charities around the globe under the banner of its 'Beauty with a Purpose' program, Miss World is also credited with directly influencing a dramatic increase in tourism in Sanya, China, host of the Miss World finals from 2003-05.

True to the head office motto, "Beauty with a Purpose", Lena and all her fellow contestants diligently fundraised in the months prior to the contest for the Miss World Canada Charity of Choice, S.O.S. Children's Villages Canada, an international organization dedicated to raising orphaned and abandoned children into adulthood, in over 130 countries. This year a whopping $25,781.00 was raised through the fundraising efforts of the delegates. Funds will be donated to the All-Canadian funded Village in Ondangwa Namibia.

Lena captured 2 of the competitions Fast Track awards as well as 3 additional general awards; the most impressive was her outstanding rendition of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber piece "Think of Me", which brought tears to some eyes in the audience. "She is a lovely, gracious and humble winner, a very strong contender at Miss World this year and we are confident that with Lena's incredible talent, poise, and grace she has a strong opportunity to bring Canada the crown" said Sastee Bachan, VP of Marketing and Communications, at the after party hosted by Houston's.

"The award that is most special to Lena's heart is the Beauty with a Purpose Award, she has done much charity work in the Chinese community" said Dr. Sherry X. Yin, mother of the new title holder. "But now she would like to use the Miss World Canada position to help even more people, any person from anywhere!!" said the elated mother.

Among her prizes for winning the crown are an all-expense paid trip to South Africa for 30 days of touring and performing, a competition wardrobe, daytime accessories by Bittersweet, one year membership at Christine's Fitness and Personal Training, photoshoot with photographer Alejandro Antequera, hair services by the prestigious Fiorio Salons, jewelry from Romika Jewels, and a year's supply of Revlon hair care products.

Lena Ma was crowned by out going Titleholder Leah Ryerse; as the reigning titleholder, Lena will now spend her year preparing for Miss World and making appearances for charity and cultural events across Canada. Summer Youth Program Seeks Canada’s Finest Teens!

The call is out to find Canada’s best overall teens for the 2nd annual Top Teen of Canada competition! Teenagers from across the country will be chosen to represent their communities in a competition that will award $5,000 in cash scholarship prizes.

This August, the chosen delegates will travel to Vancouver, BC for one week, where the focus will be entirely on them and what they can contribute to the nation should they be chosen as the Top Teen of Canada. In 2008, a group of 26 teenagers from small towns across Canada converged in Vancouver to discuss issues that were important to them, from self-image and body issues to homelessness and poverty. Open to the public, this was the perfect platform for these amazing young men and women to have their voices heard. This year, the program will be filmed for a youth documentary.

As well, the Top Teen program raised over $20,000 for their chosen charity, Cops For Cancer for the Canadian Cancer Society.

For more information, visit: www.topteenofcanada.com or email info@topteenofcanada.com

A would-be Miss Universe from Sherwood Park stands small but thinks big.
Alysha Clark, a five-foot-four 18-year-old, will strut the catwalk alongside girls as old as 27 - and some over six-feet - when she competes to be Miss Universe Canada this May.
She readily admits she doesn't fit the model mould - which she calls unrealistic - but that's the way she said she likes it.
"I have a chance to change the standard viewpoint of beauty," she said. "You see so many different kinds of beauty ... I don't just think it should be five-foot-11 and 100 pounds," she said.
This is Clark's first shot at pageant glory.
It's been a rude welcome - dieting and working out even after she was picked in February to go to the Toronto competition.
She's now getting accustomed to walking with a bowl on her head to pick up proper walking form.
"Everyone thinks it's so easy, but you have to slant your back backward (while walking), and being short, I have to take long steps with my little legs," she said.
But the challenge isn't all about working her body.
In her first audition interview, evaluators asked her to take and explain stances on current issues, including abortion and capital punishment.
"I did not expect that, so I just told them what I think, and I'm pretty concrete in my beliefs," said Clark.
She studies at MacEwan, and is looking at taking two degrees, possibly in psychology or languages.
She's also a singer and songwriter.
She'll fly to Toronto May 9 for the national competition, one of 14 from Alberta competing against 63 women in total, she said.
Following bikini and cocktail dress segments - and maybe some musical performances - she'll find out May 16 if she won.
She's hoping for a shortcut to the final 20 by winning the most votes online for the people's choice category. To cast your vote, go to www.beautiesofcanada.com
