Alysha Clark hopes her first beauty pageant will enable her to speak to adolescent girls about self confidence

Posted By Michael Di Massa News Staff

The Miss Universe Canada pageant is Alysha Clark's first entry into beauty competitions.

One of Sherwood Park's own will be competing in Toronto in May for the right to participate in the 2009 Miss Universe pageant.
Neither professional model nor veteran of the pageant scene, 18-year-old Alysha Clark is one of 60 women nationwide who has been selected to compete in Canada's round of the Miss Universe competition.
A graduate of Strathcona Christian Academy in 2008, Clark said her mother, Brenda, encouraged her to try outa for the competition after watching the Miss America competition earlier this year.
Just for fun, they went to the Miss Universe Canada qualifier in Calgary. Clark sung a cappella, was interviewed on subjects ranging from her hobbies to her thoughts on capital punishment and endured four hours of learning how to walk in a pageant, but she qualified for the national competition.
Alysha and Brenda said they were a little surprised when Alysha was picked over others at the audition who had shown more pageantry experience.
Currently a student at Grant MacEwan College, first-year student Clark is studying psychology, economics, philosophy, music and Spanish, waiting for her interests to narrow into a more clear career path.
A high school councillor (motivated by her relationships with past teachers), professional singer and economist are all very much options, Clark said. She also has aspirations of learning French once the Spanish language is mastered.
Now pageantry could be thrown into that mix if everything goes well at the Miss Universe Canada competition.
Winning the national competition would give her a larger venue to speak to young adults about growing up and help her give them motivation, Clark said.
She also speaks to her peers and family through music.
Since the age of 14, Clark has been writing her own music as an outlet for her emotions. "My songs are very much a portrayal of my emotions," she said. "The only way you can express those emotions is through music – for me, at least."
In 2006 she put her songs about personal growth and motivation (which she described as "jazzy-pop") on CD and gave them to friends and family as gifts.
Although Clark dismisses the music as "pretty typical," Brenda said it appeals to all ages.
Clark has also been volunteering her time to help others. Through Sew on Fire Ministries, a volunteer organization founded by an aunt, Clark and her family helped donate 14,000 bags of basic living materials for needy people.
They went to Mexico to help distribute some of the bags.
"(The) purpose of life is a life of purpose," Clark said.
Because she's new to the pageant scene, Clark said she has no real expectation for how far she'll go in the competition.
"I just expect to have a really good time," Clark said.
She's also looking forward to seeing Toronto outside of the context of visiting relatives. Her 19th birthday will also be celebrated while in the city for Miss Universe Canada.
With the pageant just over a month away, Clark said she is still looking for sponsors. Miss Universe Canada covers travel expenses, but wardrobe, makeup and other items are out-of-pocket.
She's also looking for the community's help to have an automatic berth into Miss Universe Canada's top 20 contestants. People will be able to vote for any woman competing in the pageant by visiting their biography page at www.beautiesofcanada.com and clicking on the vote icon. Those who sponsor contestants will also see their name posted on the biography page of person they sponsor, Clark noted.

Just wanted to mention I am off to BC this weekend for the Teen BC pageant. Looks like I have 37 girls and I am very excited to meet them. Since my website is not scheduled for launch until the end of april photos will not be posted. One thing I can tell everyone who says their predictions etc based on the photos is....You can tell nothing. I speak with the girls, get a couple of photos sent, etc and you know the girls that I think the contenders are not and they girls that I thought were just average blow me away. So a photo really does nothing.

It is actually shocking.
Have a great Week.
If anyone is in BC and wants to come send me a email.

By IAN GILLESPIE, FREE PRESS COLUMNIST

Sandra Kirilovic is explaining why she's thrilled to be competing in the Miss Universe Canada beauty pageant, when it occurs to me that I wouldn't have interviewed her -- or written this story -- 20 years ago.
Because I'm sure my editors -- particularly the female ones -- would've frowned upon any kind of beauty pageant story that didn't paint such events as sexist sideshows that objectify women.
And frankly, I likely would've agreed.
But trying to explain that to Kirilovic is a bit like trying to describe a road map, while in total darkness, to a person who always finds their way with a GPS.
Because as far as the 22-year-old University of Western Ontario graduate is concerned -- and I suspect, many of her peers -- the Miss Universe Canada pageant doesn't demean women. It empowers them.
"I think it's important to change the image of the pageant world," says Kirilovic. "In the past, it was maybe viewed in a certain way. But nowadays, I don't see why we have to get rid of pageantry. I just think we have to change our interpretation of it."
For Kirilovic, who graduated from UWO's psychology program and now plans to pursue a post-graduate degree that might ultimately lead to a career as a lawyer specializing in environmental issues, Miss Universe Canada has absolutely nothing to do with the old bimbo-in-a-sash stereotype.
"Now, I think the winner of Miss Universe Canada is looked upon as a leader, as a woman who's very strong and independent," she says. "I want to represent smart, intelligent women who state their opinion."
I'm sure a lot of 50-something feminists would roll their eyes, but Kirilovic clearly belongs to a generation of post-feminist females who have no qualms about celebrating -- maybe even exploiting -- their appearance.
The Miss Universe Canada pageant takes place in Toronto on May 16. (The winner will advance to the Miss Universe contest in August.) Kirilovic applied online and then, after undergoing a series of interviews this winter, was chosen to represent the region of London.
"Obviously, they liked my look," says Kirilovic. "But I think they were really interested in my speaking abilities and intelligence.
Of course, there is a local precedent: London's Karen Baldwin was crowned Miss Universe in 1982. But from where Kirilovic sits, that might just as well have been 1882.
Kirilovic says a Miss Universe Canada crown would primarily give her a platform to spread her enthusiasm for environmental sustainability.
And she fails to see how a contest celebrating smart, attractive women could somehow be seen in a negative light.
"It's more of a spokeswoman position," says Kirilovic, who was born and raised in Niagara Falls. "Sure, they want someone who has a nice look. But at the same time, they want someone who has a lot going on upstairs.
"I mean, if I win, I'm representing Canada," she adds. "I'm not representing hair brushes."

Former Miss Penticton and current Miss B.C. Interior, Gagan Chahal, will be competing for the title of Miss World Canada 2009 in Toronto on Tuesday.

A former Miss Penticton will be a provincial representative at this year's Miss World Canada competition in Toronto this month.

Gagan Chahal, who has been Miss Penticton and named Miss B.C. Interior last year, is looking forward to the opportunities the competition will afford her.

"I really believe in the Beauty With a Purpose (mandate)," she said of Miss World Canada's charitable program, which sees participants raise funds for a selected organization. "It will allow me to reach out to those charities and those in need that I would not normally be able to reach out to."

Beauty With a Purpose has been the pageant's motto for the last 25 years and has raised over $400 million USD for those in need. SOS Children's Villages Canada is Miss World Canada's charity of choice and is the world's largest orphan-focused charity. In 132 countries, orphaned and abandoned children are cared for through the program — over 60,000 children and youth worldwide receive long-term care.

This year's funds will go to a Canadian village that is being built in Ondangwa, Namibia in Southern Africa.

Chahal is currently attending the University of British Columbia where she is studying education and will depart for Ontario on Monday where she and 44 other contestants will go through rehearsals, photo shoots, interviews and dinners prior to the Tuesday competition.

She has no expectation of how she will do at the Tuesday pageant, but has a positive outlook about the whole experience.

"When you go to something like this so many people ask how well you think you will do," said Chahal. "You just give it your all and hope for the best. You can't go in with a closed mind."

Miss World Canada will represent the country at Miss World 2009, receive training in their chosen field of career interest, modeling and media relations, travel the country and have multiple opportunities to work with children's charities across the country.

Close to Chahal's heart is B.C. Children's Hospital — which she hopes to be able to raise funds for as she stresses the importance of youth in society.

Regardless of what Tuesday's outcome is, Chahal is enthusiastic about her future.

"You won't be disappointed because at the end of the day it's an experience that only a few get to experience," she said.

Chahal said she hopes to be involved with the Big Brothers and Sisters organization once she has completed the current semester at school.

Stephanie Grammenopoulos will compete in contest to be Miss World Canada

Mar 13, 2009 - 02:29 PM
By Parvaneh Pessian

BROOKLIN -- One of Brooklin's own beauties has made the cut for the Miss World Canada finals this year as the competition kicks off next week.

Stephanie Grammenopoulos, 18, will be one of 45 contestants from across Canada from 18 to 25, vying for the title.

"I'm a bit anxious about it right now but I've been practising speaking and answering questions and it's really exciting," said Ms. Grammenopoulos, who admits this will be her first time entering a pageant.

She stumbled upon the Miss World Canada website back in December and on a whim, decided to apply for the event, which will serve as the national finals for the well-known Miss World contest.

The preliminaries will consist of swimsuit, evening gown and interview stages. Fiften women will be chosen from the 45 national finalists to compete in the finals.

"I think the main thing is just to be yourself and make sure the judges and everyone else sees that," she said.

The Miss World contest is the world's oldest and largest international beauty competition. Its motto is "beauty with a purpose," placing the focus on promoting both interior and exterior qualities.

"They're trying to break the stereotype about just physical beauty and looking for women who have a purpose in life by helping and advocating against social injustices to make a difference in the world," said Ms. Grammenopoulos, who is currently working toward an arts degree at York University with aspirations to study business and law for her Masters.

A fervent supporter of various organizations including World Vision, Free The Children and the Canadian Cancer Society, she said she hopes to leave an impact on her community.

"I think the competition will really help me grow as a person and get to know myself better," she said, adding she aims to teach young girls to believe in themselves and understand the meaning of true beauty.

Ms. Grammenopoulos maintained an Honour Roll average while attending All Saints Catholic Secondary School in Whitby. She has won provincial awards and set records in track while juggling a variety of hobbies from playing piano and saxophone to modelling, acting and singing.

"When she came in and I met her, I noticed right away how bright she is and I think she has a great future in this as well as in her education," said Jennifer Marshall, owner of Lavish Salon and Spa in Whitby, which will be sponsoring Ms. Grammenopoulos for the pageant.

"She's really dedicated to making a difference and that's what grabbed my attention. She's just an all-around very positive person and you can tell she's doing this for all the right reasons."

The pageant will run from March 17 to 21 with Miss World Canada being crowned at the end of the week in Toronto.

To help Ms. Grammenopoulos land a spot in the semi-finals by winning the contest's People's Choice Award, vote for her online at www.missworldcanada.com under "contestants" and "Houston Steak&Ribs people's Choice Award."

The poll has been set to three times per day per IP address and will be open until Wednesday, March 18.

Beauty with a Purpose
The winner of the Miss World Canada contest will enter the final competition taking place in South Africa in September where representatives from 132 countries will be vying for the top spot. Since its launch in 1951, the competition has raised more than $450 million for children's charities worldwide.

PGRH nurse trading her scrubs for an evening gown at the
Miss Universe Canada pageant

Brains and beauty come together as Christina Heslenfeld, an operating room nurse at PGRH, competes for the title of Miss Universe Canada 2009.
Heslenfeld, 23, grew up in Terrace and said she always wanted to be in a pageant - even as a little girl. While performing with a troupe of dancers during the Miss Terrace contest when she was eight, she saw all the pretty girls in fancy dresses and made herself the promise to one day be in a competition like that one.
With encouragement from her friends, Heslenfeld sent in photos to the Patti Falconer modeling agency in Vancouver that chose some of the girls to be in the contest. She promptly got a call from the agency asking her for an in-person interview. Heslenfeld declined, not wanting to travel to Vancouver just for the possibility of being chosen. Every couple of months the agency would call and ask her again to come for the interview, she said. On a trip to Vancouver in January she met with the agents and they chose her to be in the pageant.
"I don't know why they chose me," Heslenfeld said with a laugh. "This is my first pageant ever."
The Miss Universe Canada 2009 contestants will be competing to represent Canada in the Miss Universe pageant held this summer. There are more than 50 women competing for the Canadian title from May 8 to 16 in Toronto.
There are three categories the contestants compete in, physical fitness (bathing suit), personal interview and evening gown.
Heslenfeld said each contestant provides their own evening gown, and the bathing suits are provided and are specially made for each girl, with similar material and colours used, but the design of the suit will be unique to the individual.
Heslenfeld is hoping she can get sponsorship to go to the competition and is asking for support from the community.

TORONTO, ON, March 05, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/

Over the past several years, Icon Model Management has become one of the leading modeling agencies in Toronto. It constantly continues to build more lasting relationships with its clients to help provide more opportunities to its models. Icon Models is unique in that it has several divisions, which include models and talents of all ages, shapes, sizes and looks. This strategy allows for Icon and its models to be exposed in a variety of different aspects of the entertainment industry. Icon continues to develop existing relationships and create new ones around the globe, including in Paris, Milan, Tokyo, London and New York. This allows for Icon's models to work safely and successfully in different markets.

Rosalba

The most recent venture includes one of Icon's models, Rosalba. Rosalba is taking on in representing Canada in Donald Trump's world-famous beauty pageant Miss Universe 2009. Rosalba just recently signed with Icon models but has been modeling for years around the world and has even done freelance work. She also appeared on the cover of the Vancouver View 2007 September issue. Although Rosalba has been successful in the modeling industry and has an impressive portfolio of a wide variety of work to prove it, she endured quite a lot before ending up working towards competing for the Miss Universe 2009 title. The official biography that Rosalba provided for the pageant package states that she was an orphan, living on the streets of Mexico City until she was 3 years old, when she was adopted and brought to Canada. She endured many other unfortunate experiences in her life, but that is what has made her a strong person who sees beyond surface imperfections to appreciate the inner beauty.

Although Rosalba wants to pursue modeling and acting in the future, she is using the Miss Universe 2009 for a greater cause. Rosalba is a passionate activist for under-privileged children, and has set up the Lonely Hearts Children charity. She already has contacts in Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras and wants to travel to the lower part of India to raise awareness. Rosalba is focusing on helping orphaned children in that part of the world, because getting them off the streets will, in turn, help the community. She also wants to inspire people by reminding them that the only person holding them back is themselves, and that in the end money doesn’t mean anything.

Rosalba is currently competing to become Miss Canada, from the top 12 in British Columbia. After all the applicants are processed, she will learn whether she will be able to represent Canada in Miss Universe 2009. Competing in pageants has always been one of Rosalba's interests; she was the 2nd runner up in Miss Latina Canada since August 2008. This competition, however, is her biggest one and requires her to train up to 6 full days a week. It will also give her a chance to meet Mr. Donald Trump himself, of course.

With Rosalba's exotic beauty, charm, intelligence, passion and such a strong work ethic, we are sure that she will go far not only in this competition, but in her other endeavors as well. The team at Icon Models is proudly supporting Rosalba in this competition and wants to wish her all the best!

The journey to being Miss Universe can start right here in the Oilsands City.

Fort McMurray's own Paula Bailey will be travelling to Toronto in May in hopes of being crowned Miss Universe Canada. The winner of that pageant goes on to be Canada's representative in the international Miss Universe pageant.

Bailey attended Father Patrick Mercredi Community High School before going to Keyano College to pursue a nursing degree. She said that her background in Fort McMurray has instilled in her several values that will help her to become Miss Universe.

"Fort McMurray is definitely full of hard workers and I've learned some of those values from my family. My parents actually worked for Syncrude (Canada)," said Bailey. "For me, it has been good because I've had those surroundings of hard workers."

Bailey has never even thought about taking part in a beauty pageant. Having modeled for a few years she developed several contacts in the modeling world, one of which, the person who selects Alberta representatives to the world-famous pageant, suggested Bailey take part.

While many people criticize pageants like Miss Universe, Bailey said they are about more than just looks.

"Beauty is not just physical appearance –– it's about the person you are and what you stand for," Bailey said. "Previous winners haven't won just because they are beautiful on the outside. It's because they represent something and they're confident, and they feel like they can help other people."

Bailey believes her motivation and drive to succeed is what will set her apart from the other contestants. If she wins the pageant's title, Bailey hopes to be able to work with Canada's First Nations youth, which she said would be unique for a Miss Universe.

Rebecca Flett has been a friend of Bailey's since high school and she thinks she has a pretty good shot at winning the pageant's title.

"She's from aboriginal descent which symbolizes Canada and I think the multicultural aspect of it... gives her a good chance and I guess also she's beautiful from the inside out. Its not only looks –– she also has personality," Flett said.

Bailey is currently in the process of planning a fundraising event to help support her Miss Universe bid. Anyone interested in helping her with sponsorship can contact Bailey by email at paulabailey@shaw.ca

Bonnie Casey, who lives in the Square One area, is competing in the Miss World Canada 2009 event.

By: Julie Slack

February 6, 2009 12:26 PM - Mississauga's Bonnie Casey has been chosen as a national finalist for Miss World Canada 2009.
The 23-year-old university student will compete against 47 other contestants from across the country at the Miss World Canada pageant March 21 at Toronto's St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
If Casey wins that title, she will compete on the world stage at a pageant in South Africa in the fall.
"I'm excited to be in the competition and look forward to it," she said. "This is the first time I have applied to be in a pageant and chose this one because I believe in the motto."
The motto of the Miss World pageant is 'Beauty With a Purpose,' and over the last 25 years more than $400 million has been raised from the event for children's charities around the world.
Casey, who lives in the Square One area, says she will use her singing ability in the talent portion of the pageant. She regularly sings jazz, blues and contemporary. She also enjoys writing, working out and modeling.
A political science student at York University, Casey works part time at the Royal Bank. She hopes to have a career in broadcast journalism.
Casey says she is described by her friends as vibrant, outspoken and caring, as well as being a 'social butterfly.'
She said representing Mississauga, as well as being of Jamaican/Irish heritage, has given her an eclectic feel for the diverse reality that is Canada.
Online voting begins Feb. 10 at www.missworldcanada.com
The winner of online voting will receive the 'viewers' choice' award that takes that person directly into the pageant's semi-finals.

Former rugby MVP Gwen Elliot gears up for the Miss World Canada 2009 pageant. Elliot ditches her jersey for a gown in March

Posted on Wednesday, January 21, 2009
Written by Joshua Bailie

Gwen Elliot was born into a house that didn't have running water. She didn't have cable television or internet access. She shared a room with three younger sisters. But she wouldn't change it for the world — Miss World, that is.

Elliot, 20, is one of 45 finalists vying to represent Canada at Miss World 2009, the world's most watched beauty pageant. The third-year radio and television arts student wants to redefine what it means to be a beauty queen.

"I just want to show people that you can do anything if you put your mind to it," she said.

In elementary school, Elliot fainted when she had to speak in front of her class. She was her high school's star rugby player. She has never modeled, and she fears walking on-stage in a bikini.

"I want this journey I'm going on for Miss World Canada to be inspirational for people," she said. "By challenging yourself and stepping outside of your comfort zone you can achieve goals and live your dreams."

To prepare herself for competition, Elliot found a personal trainer to sponsor her for free workouts. She has also been taking advantage of free runway lessons offered by Miss World Canada.

The lessons are meant to level the playing field for inexperienced contestants. While many of the women have modeled, Sastee Bachan, vice president of Miss World Canada marketing, said the judges' main focus is on personality, and everyone can learn how to present themselves with practise.

But this is little consolation to Elliot, who works three jobs to pay for school and who spends her free time volunteering. She also still needs to find sponsors for a dress, a bikini and the $2,100 fee for pageant entry.

"I would say underdog is an understatement," she said. "The first girl I met when I was doing the runway training was a model who had been in St. Lucia recently. She was size two and super tiny and I was just like ‘Hi! I'm from Beaverton!'"

Elliot applied for Miss World Canada online, emailed her picture in and won her spot after a phone interview. While some contestants won regional competitions, Elliot's hometown of Beaverton, Ont. wasn't eligible. Miss World's motto is ‘Beauty with a Purpose' and in the past 25 years the organization has raised over $400 million for charity.

In the competition, five categories grant contestants automatic entry into the semi-finals. Elliot is aiming to be fast-tracked for raising the most money for SOS Children's Villages Canada. She wants to raise more "than ever's been done before" in the competition. The Miss World Canada record was set in 2006 by winner Daphne Choi. She raised $15,000.

Choi was the only recent winner who — like Elliot — lacked pageant or modeling experience.

"She was an athlete… she barely knew how to wear heels," Bachan said.

If Elliot doesn't win a fast-track award, she'll need to be one of 15 remaining contestants to impress the judges. The 45 will be narrowed down to 20 after interviews, swimsuit and evening gown competitions.

The remaining 20 do another bikini competition, and 10 are chosen to continue to the second evening gown competition. From there, five finalists are chosen for the Q&A segment.

If Elliot does manage to beat the odds and win Miss World Canada, she'll go from Beaverton to Johannesburg, South Africa, for the Miss World final at the end of the year. Last year, over two billion people tuned into Miss World 2008.

Miss World Canada, and Elliot's fate, will be decided in March.

"If I fall on stage it's a learning experience. No matter what happens throughout this whole journey I'm learning a lot — I'm excited."

So even if the glass slipper doesn't fit, she'll still have a ball.

The Miss BC pageant is now accepting applications from across the province for the upcoming competition to be held the first weekend in July 2009! This yearly event attracts a sold out crowd and raises money for the Cops for Cancer charity. Cops for Cancer raises funds for pediatric cancer research through the Canadian Cancer Society. Last year’s event brought in a record-breaking $13,000 for the cause!

The Miss BC title was restructured 6 years ago by high school teacher and winner of the 2004 Canadian Male Model Search, Darren Storsley. What historically may have been a beauty pageant, the Miss BC title now represents well-rounded individuals whose intelligence, personality, passion and motivation are all criteria for the crown. All contestants receive professional training in public speaking, interview skills, stage presence, modeling, deportment, health, fitness, nutrition, self-defense, manners and etiquette, as well as choreography training for the final show. Representatives from the RCMP charity Cops for Cancer are part of this year's show, as well as children who will benefit from the fundraising of the Miss BC Pageant.

Various regional winners and one over-all provincial winner will be selected to represent British Columbia in a national competition, and from there the possibility of representing Canada at the international level!

Contestants must be at least 17 years of age by July 5th, 2009 to be eligible. The Miss BC Finals will take place the weekend of July 3-5, 2009 in Langley, BC.

So alot of people are asking me what happened that I am so angry well when I got there they were suppose to be certain categories set out by the booklet that was sent out which I did not even receive to begin with. So once I finally looked over this booklet it said that runway was separated into age categories then once the actual competition was going on they did not do this. So of course the little kid that was competing with us adults won. Also the judges were drunk while choosing the winners as I was sitting by them at supper in the restaurant and they chose a 44 year old over tanned lady to win swim wear which many of us thought was ridiculous as she first off had no idea how to walk a runway and second did not look the way a model should. She was tanned to the point of leather skin. Not to mention the casting director herself was drunk constantly!! Everything was horribly unorganized as they would say we were suppose to be there at a certain time and then the judges and casting director would not be there until sometimes HOURS after we were told to be there. Also everyone seemed to of paid different amounts to get in, some paid up to $2000US!! While others did not pay a cent! Also I have a horror story from one of the contestants to share with you all:

After being told the same story I was (that she had no competition in the category she was performing in and that Jennifer really wanted her there as she thought that she would win) this lady had told her no and that she did not have the money for it. Jennifer assured her that if she could find her way here that there would be several other canadians here that would be driving home that she would be able to catch a ride with. So this nice lady out of alberta made the trip and competed to find out that there was NO ONE driving home and she did not have a way to get back! This lady went out on a limb with no money to get there to begin with to be stranded there in las vegas with no way home. When she told Jennifer no one was driving home her response was "Oh." So this lady ended up being stranded in the states with absolutely no money and no way to get home. That was the last I have heard from her. She had said that she was going to see if she could find someone to buy her guitar and if not she was going to go to the canadian embassy where she would get deported and never be allowed back in the USA all because of this competition and the lies endured through it. If I had extra money I would have helped get her home but both my and my moms credit cards were maxed out because of this thing and are still thinking of this woman everyday wondering how she is. So this is why I am pissed off about this entire competition and I am going to make it known to everyone to not compete in or support this in any way. The funny thing is that I did not know they were partnered with Model and Talent Search Canada (MTSC) until I was already there or I would have NEVER participated as I have dealt with MTSC and their scam's before so let this be a warning to everyone! There are quit a few of us that are trying to talk to the bureau of better business as well as the canadian government to get MTSC and USA world showcase banned from canada and our money refunded as well as reimbursed for our plane tickets and other costs endured while there.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Mexican beauty queen and international pageant winner has been detained by police along with alleged drug traffickers who had assault rifles and cash.

Laura Zuniga, the 23-year-old Miss Sinaloa from the marijuana-producing Mexican state, was held with seven men at a military checkpoint in Guadalajara, police said on Tuesday.

"She is the beauty queen of Sinaloa and was aboard an SUV with the weapons and several of the men," said a police spokesman from western Jalisco state, home to Guadalajara.

The spokesman said police and soldiers at the checkpoint on the outskirts of Mexico's second-largest city were tipped off that traffickers were moving through the area Monday night.

"No one expected this young woman to be aboard, along with more than a dozen cell phones, lots of cash, pistols, bullets and two rifles," the spokesman said.

Zuniga won the Miss Sinaloa title in July and was to compete in the Miss International 2009 pageant next year in Asia. She was named "Queen of Hispanic America 2008" in a contest in Bolivia.

One of the arrested men is linked to the leadership of the Juarez cartel, which operates lucrative smuggling routes into the United States, police said. "This young woman was the gentleman's girlfriend," Jalisco state Security Minister Luis Carlos Najera said in a radio interview.

The model is the latest well-known figure to be linked to drug traffickers this year in Mexico, where President Felipe Calderon is battling powerful cartels with soldiers and federal police.

Top anti-drug security chiefs have been accused of passing vital intelligence to kingpins and police arrested seven soccer players and club directors at second division Mapaches de Nueva Italia in October. Prosecutors suspect the team is being financed by a drug gang for money laundering purposes.
