Your watch was made in 1886 and is what is known as a "full plate" design - that is, the gears are completely covered and the balance wheel sits above the top plate. This makes for a pretty thick watch, so an alternate design, known as a "3/4 plate," was created in which a portion of the top plate is "cut away" so the balance can be moved "down" amongst the other gears.
Your particular model has between 15 and 17 jewels, and is techncially a "grade 75" (a grade is a little like a car model, in that all watches of a specific grade are of the same basic design and quality). For more information on your watch - indeed, for more information on Elgins generally - you should visit http://elginwatches.org You will see lots of watches like yours.
