I would really encourage you to keep the original dial for your garndfather's watch. There's only one original one that your grandfather used, and you have it. Even if it's damaged in some way, it's part of the history of the watch - a family heirloom, after all - and this was the dial your grandfather viewed in his day on this watch. Keep it! After all, they haven't patched the holes in the Star-spangled Banner on display at the Smithsonian, but have chosen to show it as it was in its day. I would hope you do the same with your grandfather's watch.
