No one is making "fake" Elgins in the same way that there are knock-off Rolexes. But, the old Elgin watch company got out of the watchmaking business in the 1960s, and no genuine Elgins have been made since that time. Cheap imported watches are currently being sold with the Elgin name on the dial by MZ Berger of New York, which holds the license to the Elgin name in the US. The short answer is that if it's a new watch (quartz, battery operated, etc.), it's one of these. You're better off with a Timex. You might see names such as "Elgin Galaxie" or watches with a stylized "E" on the dial, which are also post-Elgin watches sold under license.
