No Gladiators yet, but tickets are selling
By LARRY HARTSTEIN
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer
The Gwinnett Gladiators don't have any players yet, but the hockey franchise isn't going to let that get in the way of ticket sales.
On Thursday, 134 days until the first game, the Gladiators began offering discounted group tickets. The team already has sold nearly 2,000 season tickets and likely will surpass its original goal of 2,100, general manager Steve Chapman said.
Individual tickets ranging from $10 to $24 will go on sale a few weeks before the Oct. 24 home opener against the Augusta Lynx.
The Gladiators may not sign players until the ECHL reaches a collective bargaining agreement with the players' union. Chapman, who sits on the negotiating committee, said he expects an agreement in a month or so.
"Until the negotiations are finalized, we don't have a firm, definitive salary cap," he said. "We're talking to many college players, a few free agents here and there, and putting the basics down for when we do go forward with contract offers."
Groups of 20 or more can get discounted tickets in each section of the Arena at Gwinnett Center, which seats 11,400 for hockey. The group rate for $16 tickets is $12.
The Gladiators will play 36 home games. Weekday games will start at 7:05 p.m., Friday and Saturday games at 7:35 p.m. and Sunday games at 4:05 p.m.
