Pro Beach Hockey wasn't so much a league, but rather a tournament. The whole thing was the brainchild of David McLane, previously best known for his "Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW)" and "Powerful Women of Wrestling (POWW)". You may remember him as the ring announcer, and the guy who had an office in a phone booth...that is, if you admit to ever watching the show!
PBH was shot on sequential weekends in late spring/early summer in California, and then aired over the following weeks on ESPN2. The players were mostly, if not all, minor league players and amateurs. Players were paid about 50 bucks per game, then if they won the tourney, they got to share a prize that paid each player $800-1000 or so.
Other roller hockey leagues that have come and gone include Roller Hockey International (RHI) and Major League Roller Hockey (MLRH). The former actually played in some NHL cities, and had decent attendance. Anaheim and Vancouver averaged around 10,000 fans per game, if you believe their figures. At one point, players were paid about $350 per win, or $250 per loss. MLRH was more in minor-league areas; presumably pay was even less.
Neither of those leagues, nor PBH survived long. Apparently, roller hockey isn't "economically viable", even in big markets. It's a shame...maybe with the right people and promotion, it could make it. Maybe somebody will come along and take a new stab at it.
