Subject: Battery Operated Bellows Drywashers

I'm taking my hand crank bellows drywasher that Sam Radding built for me back in 1996 and converting it to operate by hand OR battery.

I have a question for any drywashing guru out there. What kind of battery should I use? I have a 12v, 5amp DC motor and a variable voltage regulator to control the motor speed. The drywasher weighs 22Lbs. and is well balanced in that I don't feel the bellows pumping as I crank the machine by hand! I don't believe it will draw the full 5 amps when working in the field. I plan to place the drywasher on my ATV and transport it along with basic mining tools but I don't want to have to lug a forty Lb. deep cycle battery with me though!!

Should I use a motorcycle battery and have a small solar panel to sorta help put some juice back into the battery while I'm preping materials to run through the drywasher?? I figure I'd be running the drywasher for a total of 2- 2 1/2 hours total during a good day in the field. I would appreciate any experienced input that anyone has to offer. Thanks everyone.
