Thanks for the quick reply. I've been playing with the beast for a day or so now. It is such akick to handle an 18 year old device that is brand new! It seems to work fine and I've been able to ground balance it ( I think!).

Air testing it - it seems to detect a U.S. clad dime at about 8.5" in "trash out' with id as "dime" and an inch or so deeper in all metal. for a nickle add about 1" in trash out and a bit more in all metal. Lord knows what that means in the ground.

I plan to take a drive tomorrow (Friday - our day off in this muslim country) to an abandonded village and see if I can find anything.

I will follow up on the link you sent me - It would be good to find out if any other coils are around. Next year when I get back to Arizona and have some free time I'd like to start nugget hunting and I've read some of your posts on using it for that purpose.

Years ago when we lived in Saudi Arabia I did a bit of detecting. Never found anything spectacular, but had a couple of fun experiences. The first time I was out, I found a stone arrowhead with my detector. It sounded off with a good solid signal and I looked down and there was this little arrowhead - what the xxx? Of course, there was an old musket ball under it. That brings up the question of how the older got on top of the younger, but I guess 5000 year of sheep tramping around would move a lot of stuff around.

Mostly in saudi we looked for really old stuff. There was one site which was excavated by the University. The deposits were about 12' thick and the dating ranged from about 300,000 years BC at the bottom to about 200,000 years BC at the top. Based on the style of the stone tools -- nothing changed. Now that's conservative!

Anyway, pardon for the long reply, but I have enjoyed your posts on the various forums so much. thanks

Rick K
