The Diablo uMax was a Dave Johnson design, as were the LST, Goldbugs, 1200x series Fishers, and many, many industry greats, including the basic design work of the Troy Shadow X5. Dave has been around awhile, and has designed some of the best detectors ever made.

With that said, the Diablo uMax was an excellent, basic, manual gold machine. Still is if you can manage to find a good used one for sale. I haven't seen one on the market in awhile though.

I pushed a Diablo uMax around for several years, both for gold hunting and as an all-metal relic machine. Dug ALOT of bullets with it using the standard coil, and the smaller elliptical 3x7 coil is extremely hot on tiny targets. The "hot rock" feature, basically a second ground balance control with a bit wider range of control, can be a real benefit in some areas where "positive" hot rocks are a problem. You simply set the second "hot rock" mode to the average hot rocks in the area, and then it's a simple matter of flipping a switch to check out a signal by using the "ground balance shift" method, made even easier with the second GB control. Saves having to shift the GB point back and forth with the main GB control pot.

The Diablo uMax is definately a better and more sensitive machine than were the earlier Diablo models, and I would agree with those telling you to go in search of one of the uMax models in favor of the earlier ones. The Diablo uMax reminded me alot of the original Gold Bug from Fisher, but was smoother and easier to keep adjusted in most areas than the Gold Bugs. Still, the original Gold Bug was the first "standard" in gold machines, and still one of the greats to many of us who look back on them with fond memories.

Another machine you might consider is one of the White's Goldmasters.... the Goldmaster II, vSat, GM3, etc. All were (and are) great manual gold machines, and if manual machines interest you more than some of the newfangled auto-tracking machines, the Goldmasters are hard to beat. My favorite is still the GM3, and I've yet to find anything else that I prefer over a good old manual ground balancing machine for the ultimate in versatility.
