steve--- I think I get more hours than this out of a set. I just check them with a tester sometime during the day.

My advantage--- if any--- is being a geologist and having a little understanding of what constututes "mineralization." And like a golfer, I select the proper club (ie, detector and or searchcoil I feel the best.)

Also, I have been into serious metal detecting since about 1978, but did not find my first nugget until Thanksgiving weekend in 1981.

I agree hotrocks, especially the positive ones can fool. However, after experience, they are not that bad to deal with. I don't mind digging a few that are "possibles."

I'm not limited as to "what machine" to use. Often I just boot up a 'oldie' that I have (I'm a packrat---) just to keep my hand in.

I just knew you were tall by your post, I'm just barly 5ft-8inches. (I often can tell a persons height, bendability, hearing ability and experience by their posts.).

I find it takes me--- I'm a slow learner and do not understand electonics--- at least 40 hours or more of serious prospecting to just learn the basic rudiments of any machine.

As an example I have been using the Tesoro Lobo Supertraq about one-third to half the time over the past three years; and totally as a coinshooter and in any club organized hunts. I still find new tricks with it. (For example, I believe(?) the operating manual is wrong about needing to ground balance before using disc.) The disc mode is a Preset and has a little discrimination built in at "0." I sometimes have found it effective in some areas to hunt in disc mode--- silent search--- with the disc just advanced a tad from the "0" setting. I then swing faster and a small nugget will give a "popping" sound.

Another example: Back in the middle 1980's some gold hunters found the Fisher Motherlode 660 a poor choice--- it had no reset buttom or auto tune--- Also with its low freqency it was not sensitive to small flakes, and they stuck it in a closet. I did well with mine; but only after using it untold hrs. (And in certain areas it outshined some other machines--- I found the small nugget coil very effective around the Chollas.) I bought my first 660 at the then going price; the second one (well used) with three coils for only $50 and the third--- like new--- with only the standard coil for $75. Bill Lahr modified one with an "autotune," and the factory added a tone adustment. (I have a severe frequency hearing loss.)

My White's V/sat has been modified with an expanded ground balance--- can ground balance out the trachytes in the Trinity Range in Nevada. Also it has different SAT (autotune limits) and a toggle switchable two independant ground balance settings. With it I can switch back and forth when working a backhoe digging between the bedrock and overburden. Also, it has Dean Chapmans frequency adjustment.

I could go on and on-- but you get the idea. It is not the machine that is important-- but the users attitude and willingness to use the machine of choice.

steve, Thanks for the great post. This is how we all learn.
Hope you post more.
