Actually, you are right about the term "Saprolite." It is also a decomposed bedrock. It is a term popular with
"eastern" geologists. This is why I guessed you were referring to the East. Chock up one I missed by my playing Sherlock Holmes.

You also mentioned "papered geologists." A "paper" does not make a geologist. S. Frank Hunt proved that in hitting the highgrade Copper at Mountain City, Nevada, back about 1935 within a couple of feet as per his earlier prediction. He was on a gossan; all of the other geologists--- and several were "papered" (with several layers) were with the big companies and drilling on false gossans. Impressive!
