Jeff, you made some interesting observations. I have been in contact with several persons who own both Explorers and MXTs, and the consenus of opinion as to which is better varies. About 1/3 prefer feel the Explorer is slightly deeper, about 1/3 see no difference, and 1/3 favor the MXT. I THINK that such things as operator experience, soil conditions, target types, and plain 'ol personal bias, etc., all play a part in these opinions. As far as high conductivity targets are concerned, I suspect that the Explorer might have a slight edge over the MXT; whereas I also feel that the MXT is better on low conductivity targets. And even then, performance will vary from place to place. However, this thread involves the MXT and the X-5, and until unbiased in-ground testing occurs, we won't know the "straight skinny," will we? And, as you say, if the X-5 does give a couple of percentage points better performance than the MXT in the disc. mode, there is still the prospecting mode, relic mode, target ID meter, price, etc. etc. to consider. SO.... somebody out there buy an MXT and an X-5, and do those in-ground tests, ok? HH Jim
