Hi Guys,

My bias has changed over the years. And yes, we all have them!

My first detector was a White's, and so were the next few. But then I got a Compass, and I've been switching horses ever since. In general, I think this is a good policy, as it keeps them all trying hard to get my business.

I then fell into the quest for more depth. Still the mantra for many. But detectors have finally reached the point where I'm getting about as much depth as I really want for some practical purposes. I mean, really, how deep a hole do I want to dig in the middle of a groomed park?

So now I have a large bias revolving around ergonomics. I heavily favor machines that are light, compact, and tough. I have a White's GMT and a Fisher Gold Bug 2. I think the GMT is actually the superior unit for overall performance on both small and large gold, in a wider range of soils, than the GB2. And I think the GMT has a better iron id system.

But I find I tend to favor (and therefore grab) my Gold Bug 2 simply because I prefer it's packaging. It's close to my ideal in detector design. Light, compact, tough, and convertible from rod mount to chest or hip mount.

And now I find I am favoring my new Garrett Infinium over my Minelab SD2200D for the same reasons. My SD clearly has an edge on large nuggets at depth, but I just like the Infinium packaging more. I'm actually sacrificing some performance in favor of what actually feels best on my arm.

And so in that regard I prefer the Troy Shadow X5 over the White's MXT. I don't even have to use them, as I'm sure the performance is comparable. Let's face it, these machines are all getting very good in that regard. But that compact, lightweight X5 design draws my interest immediately. I like it, and I've never even held one!!

So am I biased? Sure am!
