I've asked that same question many times. Seems like someone could take the old T/R circuitry, add 21st century microprocessor technology, and come up with a machine that would be easier to operate, while retaining the ability to "see-through" most ferrous targets.

When I bought my first VLF detector, the White's Coinmaster V Supeme, I was blown away by the depth of detection, but ended up not liking the detector because I discovered the ground was full of really deep nails! With my previous T/R units, I simply had no idea!!

I just find it hard to believe that someone who really knows their stuff could not make a better T/R today. I've been told that the ground balance tech is what adds the depth, but at the same time makes VLF units like iron. So I suppose our new T/R would not be able to ground balance per se. But at the very least a modern White's style variable self adjusting threshold (V/SAT) control would be a big help. And surely newer coil designs would result in a bit better ground coverage?

Anyway, I'd sure like to buy one! But for now, it looks like an old Compass unit may be the best that can be had. It seems todays breed of engineer can't believe someone would possibly be interested in a detector that got a lot less overall depth, but that might truly just detect non-ferrous items.
