Hello Steve,

I'm not going to post my entire report, but will give you some general thoughts on what I concluded. Regardless on what I post, there will always be someone that agrees/disagrees with my opinions. However, that is fine, as the forum is just for that.

Without a doubt, the GP did detect deeper targets, but in all fairness, I was using a Coiltek 14inch round mono against a elliptical 14x10 DD on the Infinium. Also, I do feel in general, if the Infinium had a mono, the GP would still have at least a slight advantage.

The GP Extreme is a bit noiser, but I was impress with the Infinium's smooth threshold and minimal background noise.

Absolutely, the Infinium is a step over the conventional VLF units, but below the Minelab SD and GP's. However, quite a step for Garrett, as they have not really built a good gold hunter in some time.

In general, I was impressed with the performance of the Infinium overall for a 1k detector, and feel it would gain more depth and a more sensitivity to smaller targets with a monoloop searchcoil, along with easier pin-pointing. On the other end, I was real disappointed with its discrimination abilities, as the "internet hype" really built the unit up much more than what it is! On very larger targets, it could not discriminate to even 3/4's depth, and the TONE ID feature was real unaccurate. A matter of fact, with the TONE ID, I did not get a reading until I was about 6-8 inches from a large rusted iron pipe (foot long, 6 inch dia.) at 2 1/2 foot deep. It told me it was a diggable target, such as gold, lead or whatever else. Really disappointed on this feature, as we tested it on multiple deep targets.

However, I think we should all put our hands together, as Garrett has at least got off the ground with a successful PI gold unit. Minelab, and now Garrett are the only two. I believe since this is just their first unit, we should be looking for better improvement in the second or third generations of the Infinium. Also, the benefit of the 14 inch mono that will soon be introduced, and the possibility of other manufactures building searchcoils for such a unit.

P.S. Thanks for your kind comments in the last post Steve. Hope to meet you someday soon! Heard a lot of good things about you! See good things travel slow, but they have made it to Arizona at least...

Take care,

Rob Allison
