Hi Ralph,

Herein lies the problem. There are no EXACT equivalent coils. The Infinium has the 14"x10" DD elliptical coil.

It has been said that this is roughly the same as the Minelab 11" DD round coil, but that is debateable.

So here is my first suggestion. Since you are asking for the tests, you get to decide what coils you want compared! But we all know that no matter what you choose, someone is going to argue whether the two coils REALLY are electronically equivalent. The first thing Minelab owners say is "but the 11" DD coil is well known to be one of the poorer coils" and so the arguement starts again.

The short answer, from what I've observed so far, is that the Infinium does get comparable performance to an SD/GP outfitted with an 11" DD round coil. I can't honestly say I've really tried to determine which has the edge, however.

Why not? Well, they are VERY close, and to quote one of my favorite guys:

"But with all due respect to depth testing, let's not forget that once you move to different ground, different shapes, sizes, and positioning of nuggets, and even different alloys, everything changes. One test on one nugget in one type of soil is good under those conditions (or similar), but don't go far beyond that. Not to mention the detector settings."

I hate to say it, but until we see truly comparable coils, it will be almost impossible to get a real answer of the electronics versus electronics issue. The Infinium currently has only the 14"x10" DD elliptical, with a 14" mono elliptical and 8" mono round in the works. None of these quite match up exactly with a Minelab coil.

You'd almost suspect it was planned that way to avoid direct comparisons, except the Garrett coils are all based on pre-existing molds from other units, so can't fault them there.

If Coiltek would just make a 14" round mono for the Infinium it sure would help! Or the Joey coil. In either case, we could then get a real comparison.

But you pick the coil sizes, the test target (US nickel?), set the parameters, and I'll try and get some kind of answer... next week! Got a plane to catch for the nugget grounds in the morning, so someone else will have to do comparable tests until then. The more the better anyway.
