I found that the original 17000 battery pack still good as recently as last June. I use it seldom; I have always prefered alkali's instead of messing with rechargeable batteries. I can borrow Jack Leufs 18000 and also use it with the accessory non-rechargeable battery pack--- which I bought for Jack.

Alkali's now have a long shelf-life and the AA's are reasonably priced. Usually right after Christmas the "coppertops" are on sale so I stock up. However, rechargeables are much better than they once were, so they may be more of cost saving option than 10-15 years ago and I should reconsider. I do not have an opinion regarding slow smart chargers; check with Doc and go with whatever he suggests; he will not steer you wrong.

The only time I was forced to use the rechargeable system was with my Sd-2200d and I bought two sets of accessory small sized batteries from John at Lifestyle (John is just over the hill north of me and I also bought the 2200d from him) and just used the vehicle charger. I used one battery in the AM and switched to the second for afternoon. Neither were ever run down and would recharge to very slow red-light blinking w/o any problems. (I have two main truck batteries in my ol' F-150. Also a small solar panel if out camped for several days.)
