I wish to thank those that have been asking for Vol 3 sixth edition update.

It is no longer mine, Financially or legally. It now belongs to Chris Gholson and Chris will co-author it with revisions as Vol 4 First Edition.

In the meantime, Joe Bogosian of Plateau Supply in St. Louis has the exclusive right from Chris to update the Sixth Edition. I freely updated it last March, 2001, as the "sixth edition update." which included 10-page general text update of the latest happenings plus additional information on gold machines that were manufactured after the Sixth Edition. I'm currently doing this again, bringing the text up to date to include the Fisher Gold Strike.

However, as I'm currently trying to master it, I'm on a self inflicted "hold." Joe is a major distributor and several dealers who post on this forum are selling it. If any of the March, 2001, copies are still available, buy it. I will later send the Fisher Gold Strike update which can be glued in an envelope on the back cover. About 2-pages; to anyone who asks me.

My next update will be the Garrett. At that time I will add a small section on meteorites as well as my findings on the Garrett. Hopefully I will be using it in w. Nevada.

I do not know who is buying my booklet, "ADVANCED---" but it is selling well. I just put together 400 copies for Plateau Supply and Gem Guides. I originally thought that ADVANCED would only sell 1000 copies; but to my surprise it has now over 5000 copies. I need to get another 1000 covers printed as I'm out of covers. I have the text pages.

I'm completely out of "Nuggetshooting Dryplacer Areas" which is an updated version of my original "Follow the Drywashers." It is on back order with Gem Guides and Joe has only a few copies left. I need to have the pages 1-33 printed so as to be able to together more booklets.

While I'm at it, Jim McCulloch has an excellent new book out, Advanced Nuggetshooting,"(I have a May 2000 edition) and all three of Larry Sallee's "Zip, Zip's" while currently out of print may still be available in some shops. The last of Willie Merrills booklet "Those Elusive Gold Nuggets," been sold by the Randsburg General Store. Hopefully, Willie can be encouraged to reprint. Jimmy Sierra's booklets on "Finding Gold Nuggets" a must.

Let me give some more information: With the current price of gasoline, buying a few how-where- booklets such as above a wise move. Expanding this thought: Some of the oldtimers have good information. Over the past 50 years I have acquired quite a pile of material; textbooks, papers, and bulletins, some well over 100 years old. Just this week I was able to locate and buy a copy of USGS Bulletin 430. (600 plus pages.) Full of good information--- just as an example, but not limited to--- J.M. Hills March, 1909, report on the placer deposits of Greaterville Az.-- however, I bought the Bulletin for F.L. Hess's "Gold Mining in the Randsburg quadrangle, California." Very informative as it covers the broad area in detail; and accurate even though written about 90 years ago. He was able to visit and study the geology, surface and underground as the properties were then actively being mined.

My (Mackay) school of mines, mining prof; JA Carpenter worked at the Kelly in Red Mountain in the early days; prior to about 1924. In 1948 I was one of his students and have copies of some of his earlier bulletins; but on Tonopah, etc., and nothing on Red Mountion.

Changing the subject: While I'm at it I want to thank Gene Brewer for "taking my picture" to replace the current one on the back cover of the update. He tried to take the wrinkles out of my face, but unable. Cameras don't lie.

Last but not least: This weekend, Sat May 4th, from about 10:00 AM to about 3:00 PM I will be involved in putting on a seminar at Stapp Mining 1295 North E St San Bernardino. (Corner of 13 and E st) Dee expects about 35 in attendance. Anyone who wishes is invited. Bring a chair and maybe an umbrella as it will be in the back parking lot. Stapp's phone # is 909-884-7060. (Mine is 909-875-4812.) Informal, Good fellowship, Coffee and doughnuts. No charge or hidden agenda. My Best to All, Jim Straight (BS Geological Engineering Mackay School of Mines 1954.)
