Hi matt,

I admit I'm baffled by how heated the discussions get. I own Fisher, White's, and Minelab, and bought my father a Tesoro. And now it looks like I'll be getting a Garrett. I totally agree with your view of detectors as tools, and I like having lots of tools. I certainly don't care what the brand is, as long as it works.

I try to keep my comments in the "if you don't have something nice to say... don't say it" category. Those times when I am critical of a detector's features, or lack thereof, I explain why and offer my opinion of how it could be improved. Constructive criticism.

Some of these folks have a financial interest to protect, although I seriously think the way they go about it actually works against them. But many seem to feel that anything said about a detector they own is actually being said about them. "Geez, I own X-Brand, and you are saying X-Brand is no good, so you are saying I made a bad choice, or I'm stupid" and so the battle begins.

Ah well, people will be people, but it seems to me that metal detectors are a rather trivial thing to get your knickers all bunched up over!
