Hi guys, here is what I have been told by SHADOW dealers and those who have seen/tested the X-5 and/or protoypes: Designer of what became the X-5: Dave Johnson. This design later augmented by other designers. Basic design criteria: a better version of the Tesoro Lobo Supertrac. ANOTHER, much-improved LST: the MXT; i.e Johnson's design, augmented by other engineers. So, both machines are pretty much "out of the same womb." Ralph mentioned getting "4 or 5 inches air test" on a 1.3 grain nugget; I got an accurately measured 4 inches in-air with a one grain nugget. Pretty much the same. (Let's not get overly excited by air tests) Yes, until there can be an in-ground, side-by-side test, NOBODY can say with certainty (except maybe Johnson?) which is better. But consider this: Do both machines have the same features? Does the X-5 have autotacking? I am told it does not, solely manual GB. Is this correct, or have I been mis-informed? Does the X-5 have variable SAT? I am told it does not. Does the X-5 have a meter which tells: 1) degree of soil mineralization, 2) percent probability that a target is iron 3) VDI numbers which help identify the target type? I am told that the X-5 does not. Does the X-5 come supplied with an elliptical coil, perferrably of a DD design, which is standard on all other prospecting machines? I am told it does not. I am told Shadow doesn't even make an ellitical coil; is this correct, or not? How many different size coils ARE available for the X-5? Very few, or so I am told. Now, is this info correct, or have I been talking to a bunch of mis-informed characters? Is any or all of the above correct? If all is correct, than, the MXT has features which make it FAR MORE USEFUL IN THE GOLDFIELDS. Variable SAT, elliptical coil, autotracking.... these have become the minimum standards for serious gold machines. Does the X-5 posesses these features? If so, and I am thus mis-informed, then one and all have my apologies. And no, I am not trying to start a "detector war." Nor, am I trying "sell" any body anything. One call to Troy and I can be a Shadow dealer. So far this year I have sold an average of 9.3 detectors per month, out of my house, and have just opened a shop in the local rock and gem shop. Troy wouldn't mind having me as dealer, I am sure. Personally, I would LOVE getting my hands on a X-5, as well as every new machine that hits the market; when I was field test editor for "Treasure" and various other mags I got to play with lots of machines. So, if the X-5 does indeed have all the features which we really need for serious nuggetshooting, and I am mistaken about this, tell me so. IF the X-5 is a better gold prospecting machine than the GMT, I will use it. No problem there. I am first and foremost a nugget hunter, NOT a detector seller. HH to all, and thanks for the lively input; things were getting a little boring here!
