Interesting testing you did, but I am not quite sure what you did when you said the rock was in a fixed position. If this means you placed the rock in the field of the coil where it remained steady, then only moved the nugget, I would expect the nugget to be seen.

The disc mode requires motion of all objects of concern. Any stationary object will not provide a signal regardless of how strong an intial signal it is. So, if the rock remains stationary and only the nugget is moved, the rock would basically not exist as far as the disc motion circuitry is concerned.

It is amazing how little motion it takes to generate a response through the filters. Of course, the filter design does make a difference.

For those unfamiliar with the term filter, one can think of something more common, the autotune or VSAT as a single filter. However, most autotune controls do not have the adjustment range to be as fast as a typical filter used in the disc mode. Most disc modes have 2 filters or more in series to reduce the effects of the ground signals.
