Subject: GM-3 vs. V-Sat

Hi Jim,

I'm still using a GM-3 as my primary detector. Just haven't found anything else that I like any better...... kinda like it's built into my arm or something. I use it in a chest harness mount, and have my coils and rods built with the cables running up inside the rods, a separate rod for each coil. Just un-plug one and plug another in.

Back when I first got the GM-3, I did some comparisons with the V-Sat, as it was still avaliable from most of the White's dealers then..... carry-overs..... and the only major difference I noticed between the two was the much wider gain range of the GM-3. It seemed to me like the V-Sat gain had to be run alot higher than that of the GM-3, their so-called "expanded dynamic range" I guess. The frequency shift option helps around other machines too as you mentioned. But as far as practical operation, I think the two are basically the same circuits with just a couple of "feature" differences. I've heard some comment that the GM-3 is "hotter" and harder to keep stable, while I've heard the same of the V-Sat. Probably just a matter of operator settings I would guess.

Like you, I'd like to give one of the little White's coils a try on the GM-3 just to see if it is as good or better than the goldfoot / hotfoot coils from Sierra. It's hard to believe that White's has gone these many, many years without introducing a little sniper coil for the GM series.

Ralph
