Subject: Depth Hub-Bub

Ok so what do I mean by that ? well after many years of nugget hunting with metal detectors I have found that even the slightest change in soil conditions, shape of target, equipment, operator, etc. Directly affects to a large degree how well the detector will work.

In a controlled test most manufactures can back up their claims used in advertising, but seldom will these depths be achieved in the gold fields. Tests done in the field produce more reliable results, but are tests done in "that" field not the one you will be working.

The shape and purity of your target will also greatly affect the depth at which you will hear a nugget also. I have found many nuggets of the same weight that for some reason or another can not be heard at the same depth in an air test or in the ground in my test patch. I did these tests because I noticed in the field that signals on like weight nuggets varied in intensity in different areas or in the same area depending on shape.

There have also been tests done with nuggets alloyed with different amounts of natural occurring impurities such as silver and copper and the results showed that this is also a factor.

Then you have equipment, some operators choose to use cheap headphones etc. with their metal detector. This is a mistake !! You own a quality machine why hinder it's performance with low quality accessories ?

Now you have the operator, no two people hear and interpret signals the same, machines may be set differently or wrong etc. This is the biggest factor by far. You need to get to know your detector inside and out ! Try different settings, learn all of it's sounds. How many of you actually have a test area with different targets buried to learn your detector's sounds on targets at various depths ? Try it.

What I am getting at here is that when you hear all the BS going back and forth about depth and who's is better remember that there are just to many variables to take a lot of it to heart. I use both a PI and VLF depending on conditions and a large selection of different coils. Knowing what to use and when gives a definite advantage to the operator.

Just something to ponder...Bill S.
