I see you made it over to the forum for a visit. Good to have you ! (this gal is one smart cookie, guys !! grin)

I'm not sure about rentals or loaners on detectors in your area, but any good detector dealer would probably be willing to give you some instruction, recommendations, or demonstrations on their particular line of machines.

Are you talking about saltwater or freshwater beach hunting ? There are certain machines suited better to one type of environment over the other. Alot also depends on the mineralization level of your beaches there. For saltwater conditions, PI machines are usually better "overall", although they lack discrimination (trash elimination) capabilities that the VLF types usually have. But discriminating (VLF) machines are much more efficient in that they can eliminate alot of "junk digging", where you basically have to dig every signal with a PI type machine.

As a place to start, try to keep with one of the better known and more widely used brands of detector for a beginner machine..... Tesoro, White's, or Fisher being at the top of the list. There are other good brands out there, with several being very specialized in nature. One advantage to keeping with the major manufacturers is that if you don't like the particular machine, it will have a ready resale market.

Here are a few metal detecting forum addresses you might look into, with lots of good information on different makes and models, and metal detecting information in general:

http://www.thetreasuredepot.com
http://www.treasurenet.com
http://www.troycustomdetectors.com
http://www.findmall.com/mbindex.htm

The first two have several different forums accessible from their home pages, many of which are brand-specific. Tesoro Detectors have a very wide following, and make some excellent and simple to operate machines, some of my personal favorites over the years for inland hunting of schools, parks, playgrounds, church grounds, etc.

White's also makes several excellent machines, many of which are more advanced in nature, as does Fisher. Their forums are also accessible at the above addresses.

Troy Galloway is also nearing completion of his new Shadow X-5 detector which is looking to be an excellent machine when it goes into full production later in the year. I helped Troy with some of the field testing on the prototypes of this new machine, and was very impressed with it's capabilities. It will be rather pricey ($1000 range), so may not be of interest as a beginner-level machine. The first of the Shadow series (the X-2) was a Tesoro-produced model, and is now out of production, but still available on occasion on the various forum classified pages. The X-5 will be assembled and warrantied by Fisher, although it is an independant and soley-owned design by Troy engineers.

Hope this is of some help to you, and give us a shout if we can help you zero in on a good machine for you area.

Ralph
