Hi Steve, Ralph, and all! Steve, re-read my earlier posts, and you will see that I truly laud your efforts in getting White's to put out a smaller coil. As we both know, there has been a crying need for one. I have suggested it for years, but I reckon I ain't got the "pull" you do. (grin) Since I haven't yet compared the "Mini DD" to the "Hot Foot" I cannot personally offer any information; what info I passed along in my last post was what I was told today by a top White's rep. Certainly, a little coil WILL be more sensitive to little nuggets: I know for a fact that the Hot Foot is VASTLY more sensitive to sub-grainers than is the regular DD. (One can read that in my much earlier comments re: the Hot Foot) BUT.... at 6.75 inches in diameter the "MDD" DOES NOT (CAN NOT) have the maximum depth potential on larger nuggets as does the 9 inch Hot Foot. My informant told me that on typical "Mojave Midgets" (i.e. about 4.5 grains on the average) the HF got about 1.5 inches more depth than the MDD. Since this person has found thousands of nuggets himself, his opinion is certainly worth knowing. INTERESTINGLY the first nugget I found with my HF was a flat 4.5 grainer at 6 inches, and subsequent, repeated, in-ground testing verified this. NOW... if the 6.75" diameter of MDD is 75% as great as the 9 inch diameter of the HF, then 75% of 6 inches depth on a 4.5 grain "MM" means an additional 1.5" depth potential for the HF, a circumstance my informant reported. (Got that? Simple math.) As for my comments re: ground coverage per sweep, the HF will cover 1.33 times the ground per sweep. (i.e 9" versus 6.75") That, too, is basic math. NOW.... as regards the POSSIBILITY of problems with epoxy-filled coils (and this will hopefully answer your inquiry, Ralph); here is some little-known info: As epoxy cures, it does so unevenly, and thus there is a potential that the coil wires will "migrate" out of place. Remember, proper wire placement is critical to proper coil performance. What this means in practical terms is that coil will differ from coil in ability. Really. The fact is, there is as much as 30% difference in coil potential, from best to worst, due to this factor. Thus, those in the "know," (read that, dealers who get in large shipments of the same detectors) know that some coils are naturally "better" than others, even from the same batch. Yeah.... I admit to "cherry-picking" machines as they arrive, to find the best machine/coil combo for my own use. (A common practice; I am in no way unique) Many manufacturers of epoxy-filled coils "junk" a large percentage of them, due to the fact that the wires migrated so much that the performance suffered. Really. BUT.... lest anyone think I am "bashing" the MDD, recall that I speak of ALL "accessory" coils as "specialty" coils, which have their own particular strengths and weaknesses. Will I stock the MDD? Yep! If it like it better than the HF will I use it, and so advise others? Yep! When I get them in, and compare them, will I post that info? Yep! And if I am wrong in the above assessment, will I admit it? Yep! (Really!) Readers of my posts on the subject of the HF WILL note that I have been VERY candid regarding the false signally issue. Whew..... Hope this helps; 5:00AM comes early, so gotta get to bed. Best wishes to all; HH Jim
