Good thoughts on the flux-mag. Eric talked about such an arrangement a few years back, but also mentioned how unwieldy it would be to get any depth..... better to use separate units than try to incorporate it all into one. Some of the mag sticks have to be swung, almost "whipped", at much greater sweep speeds than most detectors to get good readings also.

Another method of checking a strong target signal as ferrous is to simply carry a 2 or 3 ft. section of milled wood (edge trim, 1x1/4 stock, etc) and a good compass. Once you get a good signal, lay the wood across the center point of the target. From outside the signal area, slowly slide your compass along the wood stock. Once it is within range of the object, the needle will deflect if the target is ferrous, but not if it is a non-ferrous object. Of course, this only works on larger or shallower targets with a strong enough field to deflect the compass. Still saves alot of digging.
