Hi Ralph,

I really think this idea has potential. I'll give it a real world test ASAP. Have to prove the concept works first. But it really seems sound to me.

One hurdle would be that it appears from the diagram above that there are two sensors, upper and lower, in a flux-gate mag. It would be neat if these could be incorporated into the rod assembly of the detector, but my guess is that the positioning of these sensors must be very accurate. It explains why these things are configured as wands. So maybe the "wand" would have to clip onto the detector rod externally in practice, unles the detector rod was fixed in length.

The FP-10 features a "null" button the tunes out nearby iron, in effect balancing the unit to it's surroundings, so that might overcome issues with the unit picking up and readings from any small amount of steel actually in the detector. As you have noted, however, there is little ferrous material in most detectors.
