Subject: Metal Detecting Technical Articles

In the several days since our NuggetShooter’s Forum has been back online, I have received numerous emails asking if it was possible to retrieve some of the technical articles from the old forum and re-post them here on the new page. Unfortunately, we lost ALL of our archived messages when our previous host went belly up with no warning to any of it’s clients. So all that we had, with the exception of some of that material that was saved to disc or printed out, has long vanished.

What seems to be of most interest to those who have inquired were specific articles we did on different types of metal detectors and their individual function controls, how they work, what they do, and how to get the best out of each in relation to the settings of other controls on any given machine.

So what I would like to do is a complete start over…… beginning with VLF detectors, and then later, moving on to PI type units. If anyone has any specific suggestions on how to format this or specific information they would like to see covered, please drop me an email. As of this time, this is a general outline of different articles that I will be putting together, dealing with each aspect of one particular type of machine, whether VLF or PI:

1. Understanding VLF Detectors – General Information
2. Understanding VLF – Ground Balance
3. Understanding VLF – Sensitivity or Gain
4. Understanding VLF – Threshold
5. Understanding VLF – SAT
6. Understanding VLF – Coil Types
7. Understanding VLF – Iron I.D. vs Phase Discrimination
8. Understanding VLF – Misc. Features
9. Understanding VLF – Advantages and Limitations

I think once we put this information all together, the beginner to the more advanced user will have a better understanding of each of the controls and general operating principles of the VLF detector in a way that might escape the more casual user of these machines. While each setting of such machines is important in relation to all of the other settings, understanding how and why they all interact is the only way to become truly proficient in the use of a good VLF detector, whether for gold nugget hunting/prospecting, coinshooting, relic hunting, or beach and water detecting.

Any suggestions to make this series more informative and user friendly will be appreciated, and I will get these written as time permits. As always, these will be posted as threaded entries so that everyone can add their own thoughts and experiences so that, together, we can offer up some help and ideas to the newbie crowd to perhaps give them the leg up – head start that most of us found unavailable when we first started out.

I know there are alot of years of combined experience here on the forum, and the more we can share each of our experiences and pass our collective knowledge on to others, the better we can make this hobby or endeavor more rewarding for everyone involved, and keep the interests up for the future generation of NuggetShooter’s.

My thanks to everyone for all you add to the forum !

Ralph Bryant
