There is also a notable drop from Zealand Ridge to the col before Guyot, that is the extra 250'. If anything, his number is too low counting the minor ups and downs on the ridge

Here I think your math may be better

It means that if you do the hike in reverse direction from the description, you need to go up 300'. If a trail is all uphill, no reverse elevation is given. If you climb over a 300' ridge on the way, the [forward] elevation gain will be 300' more than the difference in elevation in starting and ending points, and (rev. 300') will be listed
